Real Bodies

Unlike ideal rigid bodies, real solid bodies can always be deformed when subjected to sufficient force. If the forces are too small to break the atomic bonds within the material, the deformation is called elastic. However, if very large forces are applied, the internal structures of the solid can be damaged, resulting in permanent deformation. This type of deformation is called plastic deformation.
