Masculine (der)
- People/things with natural male gender: der Mann, der Vater
- Seasons, days, months: der Sommer, der Montag
- Many nouns ending in:

Feminine (die)
- People/things with natural female gender: die Frau, die Mutter
- Most nouns ending in:
