🧱 Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben)
In main clauses, the prefix goes to the end of the sentence.
Examples:
- Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf. (aufstehen – to get up)
- Wir rufen unsere Freunde an. (anrufen – to call)
The full verb is used (not split) in infinitive form:
- Ich möchte aufstehen.
- Er will anrufen.
Common separable prefixes:
> ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, nach-, vor-, weg-, zurück-
🧱 Non-Separable Verbs (Untrennbare Verben)
These verbs never split. The prefix stays attached to the verb, even in main clauses.
Examples:
- Ich verstehe das nicht. (verstehen – to understand)
- Sie besucht ihre Familie. (besuchen – to visit)
These are also used as-is in modal/infinitive constructions:
- Ich will verstehen.
- Wir müssen besuchen.
