1.2.1 Tawḥīd ar-Rubūbiyyah

Meaning of Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah

Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah is the belief that Allah alone is the Lord, Owner, Creator, and Controller of everything that exists. It is to affirm that no one shares with Him in creating, sustaining, giving life and death, or managing the affairs of the universe.

Allah summarizes this meaning in many verses. Among the clearest is His saying:

“All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
Qur’an 1:2

“Lord of the worlds” means the One who created, owns, and manages every world and every creature.

Another verse explains this clearly:

“Surely, His is the creation and the command. Blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
Qur’an 7:54

Here Allah joins “the creation” and “the command.” Creation belongs only to Him, and the command and control of affairs belong only to Him.

The Prophet ﷺ expressed this belief in a short phrase when he said:

“O Allah, there is no bringer of what You withhold, and no withholder of what You give, and the wealth of the wealthy avails nothing against You.”
Al Bukhari and Muslim

This hadith shows that giving, withholding, benefit, and harm are in the Hand of Allah alone, which is the core of Rubūbiyyah.

Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah means believing that Allah alone creates, owns, and controls everything, and that no one shares with Him in any aspect of lordship.

Allah as the Sole Creator

A central part of Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah is to believe that Allah alone brought everything into existence from nothing. No being helps Him in creation, and no one creates independently besides Him.

Allah says:

“Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.”
Qur’an 39:62

And He challenges people who worship others besides Him:

“This is the creation of Allah, so show Me what those besides Him have created. Rather, the wrongdoers are in clear error.”
Qur’an 31:11

Even those who disbelieve in worship usually admit that Allah is the Creator:

“If you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will surely say, ‘Allah.’”
Qur’an 31:25

This shows that Rubūbiyyah, at least in a basic sense, was known even to many polytheists, though they failed in worship.

Allah as the Absolute Owner and King

Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah also includes belief that Allah is the true Owner and King of everything. All that we “own” is only a temporary trust given by Him. We possess nothing by ourselves.

Allah describes Himself:

“Say, ‘O Allah, Owner of the kingdom, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your Hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.’”
Qur’an 3:26

On the Day of Judgment, all false claims to power and ownership will disappear, and only Allah’s kingship will remain:

“To whom belongs the dominion today? To Allah, the One, the Irresistible.”
Qur’an 40:16

The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to recognize Allah’s ownership even in daily life. When a calamity strikes, a believer says:

“Those who, when a disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’”
Qur’an 2:156

This statement affirms that we and everything we have are owned by Allah and will return to Him.

Allah as the Sustainer and Provider

Another essential aspect of Rubūbiyyah is that Allah alone sustains His creation and provides for them. Food, water, health, opportunities, and every form of provision come only from Him, even if they reach us through human effort or visible causes.

Allah says:

“And there is no creature on earth except that its provision is upon Allah. And He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear record.”
Qur’an 11:6

He challenges the false gods that people call upon:

“Say, ‘Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living? And who arranges every matter?’ They will say, ‘Allah.’ So say, ‘Then will you not fear Him?’”
Qur’an 10:31

The Prophet ﷺ reassured the believers regarding provision when he said:

“If you were to rely upon Allah with true reliance, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out in the morning with empty stomachs and return in the evening with full stomachs.”
At Tirmidhi

This hadith shows that Allah’s Rubūbiyyah continues every day in every living being. He is actively feeding, healing, and supporting His creation.

Allah as the Controller of All Affairs

Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah also means that Allah alone directs and controls everything that happens in the universe. Movement and rest, life and death, honor and humiliation, all occur by His will and wisdom.

Allah says:

“Allah is the One who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, then will bring you to life. Is there any of your partners who does anything of that? Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.”
Qur’an 30:40

And He describes Himself as the constant manager of the universe:

“He arranges every matter from the heaven to the earth.”
Qur’an 32:5

Another verse joins creation, guidance, and control:

“Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form, then guided it.”
Qur’an 20:50

The Prophet ﷺ expressed this belief in a moving supplication:

“O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of everything, Splitter of the grain and the date stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur’an, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything You are holding by the forelock. You are the First, there is nothing before You, and You are the Last, there is nothing after You …”
Muslim

The phrase “everything You are holding by the forelock” means that every creature is under Allah’s complete power and control. No one can escape His will.

Recognizing Rubūbiyyah through Signs in Creation

Even a person who has never studied religion can recognize Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah by reflecting on the world around them. The order of the universe, the balance of nature, and the perfection of the human body all point to One wise, powerful Lord.

Allah invites us to think:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for people of understanding.”
Qur’an 3:190

And He says:

“We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.”
Qur’an 41:53

The regular rising of the sun, the cycle of seasons, the way a tiny seed becomes a tree, and the process of pregnancy and birth are continuous reminders of Allah’s Rubūbiyyah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No one is more patient in hearing harm that he dislikes than Allah. They ascribe a child to Him, yet He grants them health and provision.”
Al Bukhari and Muslim

This hadith shows that even those who insult Allah still receive His care. He continues to sustain them, proving His Lordship over all, not only over believers.

The Inner Recognition of Rubūbiyyah

Humans have been created with a natural instinct that inclines them toward their Lord. In times of extreme fear or danger, this inner recognition often becomes very clear. People who usually forget Allah suddenly call on Him alone.

Allah describes this:

“And when harm touches you at sea, lost are all those you invoke except Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away. And ever is man ungrateful.”
Qur’an 17:67

He also says:

“When waves come over them like canopies, they call upon Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, then among them are those of moderate faith. Yet none rejects Our signs except every treacherous ungrateful one.”
Qur’an 31:32

This shows that deep inside, people know there is only one true Lord who can save them. That is an inner sign of Rubūbiyyah that Allah placed in every soul.

The Prophet ﷺ told about a covenant taken from the children of Adam that supports this inner witness:

“Allah took a covenant from Adam at Na‘man, that is Arafah. He brought forth from his loins all his descendants and spread them before Him, then He addressed them: ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said, ‘Yes, we testify.’”
Ahmad and graded authentic by some scholars

This narration reflects the Qur’anic verse where Allah mentions this event, and it shows that the recognition of Allah’s Lordship is deeply rooted in human nature.

The Effect of Rubūbiyyah on the Believer’s Heart

Belief in Tawḥīd ar Rubūbiyyah is not only information about how the universe works. It has a strong effect on the heart and character of the believer.

When a Muslim knows that Allah is the only Lord, several feelings grow inside:

First, trust. The believer knows that affairs are not in the hands of random events or blind luck. Everything is under the control of a wise and merciful Lord.

Allah says:

“And upon Allah let the believers rely.”
Qur’an 14:11

Second, calmness and security. The believer knows that no one can harm or benefit except by Allah’s permission.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Know that if the whole nation were to gather together to benefit you, they would not benefit you except with something that Allah has already written for you, and if they were to gather together to harm you, they would not harm you except with something Allah has already written against you.”
At Tirmidhi

Third, humility. When a person realizes that they do not create their own success, wealth, or health, pride decreases. They become grateful instead of arrogant.

Allah warns against forgetting this:

“Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations who were greater than him in power and more abundant in accumulation?”
Qur’an 28:78

Finally, patience. Knowing that Allah controls life and death, giving and taking, helps the believer be patient in trials and not lose hope.

Allah says:

“No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being. Indeed that, for Allah, is easy. So that you do not grieve over what has escaped you nor exult over what He has given you.”
Qur’an 57:22–23

All these states of the heart grow stronger as a person understands Rubūbiyyah more deeply.

Common Misunderstandings about Rubūbiyyah

Some people imagine that Rubūbiyyah only means believing in a “creator” in a general way, while daily life and practical matters are separate. The Qur’an shows that this is false. Belief in Allah as Lord means believing He is involved in every detail of life.

Allah criticizes those who divide belief in this way:

“Say, ‘Who rescues you from the darknesses of the land and sea when you call upon Him in humility and privately, “If He should save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful”?’ Say, ‘It is Allah who saves you from it and from every distress, then you still associate others with Him.’”
Qur’an 6:63–64

Others think that Allah created the universe then left it to move on its own. The Qur’an strongly rejects this idea and shows that Allah is always managing and sustaining His creation:

“Allah holds the heavens and the earth so that they do not cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them after Him. Indeed, He is Ever Forbearing, Oft Forgiving.”
Qur’an 35:41

And He says:

“Every day He is in some affair.”
Qur’an 55:29

This means He is constantly giving life, taking souls, answering supplications, forgiving sins, and managing every matter.

Some also think that there are other hidden powers that independently control parts of the universe, such as “nature,” “fortune,” or “the stars.” In truth, all these are only created things and do not possess any independent power.

Allah says:

“Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command.”
Qur’an 7:54

The Prophet ﷺ said about blaming time for events:

“Allah said, ‘The son of Adam abuses Me, he curses time, while I am time; in My Hand are the night and the day.’”
Al Bukhari and Muslim

This means that time itself does not act, but Allah is the One who decrees what happens in time. So the believer does not attribute independent power to created things.

The Universality of Rubūbiyyah

Belief in a single Lord is not unique to Islam as a final message. It is the belief of all prophets and messengers who came before. They all called their people to recognize Allah’s Lordship and to worship Him alone.

A prophet of old is quoted as saying:

“Their messengers said, ‘Is there doubt about Allah, Maker of the heavens and the earth?’”
Qur’an 14:10

Ibrahim, peace be upon him, spoke to his people:

“Indeed, I am free of what you associate with Him. Indeed, I have turned my face toward the One who created the heavens and the earth, inclining to truth, and I am not of those who associate partners with Him.”
Qur’an 6:78–79

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ continued this same call. In Makkah he recited verses affirming Rubūbiyyah in order to remind his people of what they already admitted, then he called them to worship Allah alone.

Allah commanded him:

“Say, ‘Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.’”
Qur’an 6:162

Rubūbiyyah therefore is the foundation that joins all the prophets and all true followers of divine guidance in every age.
