1 Preface

Introduction

Every Muslim says the testimony of faith with love and certainty, “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” Yet many people know his life only in fragments. They may know some miracles, a few stories from his childhood, or details about major battles, but they do not see the whole journey from beginning to end. This course aims to present the Seerah, the life story of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, in a way that is clear, gentle, and suitable for absolute beginners.

The goal is not only to learn information, but to build a living connection with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Allah Himself commands the believers to follow and love the Prophet ﷺ, and this love cannot be complete without knowing who he was, how he lived, and what he taught.

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.”
(Quran 33:21)

This preface explains why this course was written, what Seerah means, why it is important to study, which sources it uses, and how you can benefit most from reading it.

Purpose of Writing This Course

The first purpose of this course is to introduce the life of the Prophet ﷺ from beginning to end in a simple and structured way. Many Muslims feel that the Seerah is too big or too detailed to start with. Others think it is only for advanced students of knowledge. This course is written to remove that fear and to say, “You can begin right here.”

The second purpose is to help the reader love and honor the Prophet ﷺ through understanding, not only through emotion. When you see how he was born as an orphan, how he lived with truthfulness, how he showed mercy even to his enemies, and how he trusted Allah in every difficulty, your heart naturally begins to love him.

لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ
“The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all the people.’”
(Al Bukhari and Muslim)

The third purpose is to connect Seerah to real life. The Prophet ﷺ faced ignorance, injustice, poverty, mockery, loss, and war. Yet he remained patient, balanced, and hopeful. By studying his life, we learn how to respond to our own problems, whether they are at home, at work, in society, or within ourselves.

The fourth purpose is to give a framework for understanding Islam as a whole. Seerah shows us how beliefs, worship, law, character, family life, and society all came together step by step. It is like seeing the construction of a building from its foundation to its completion.

Finally, this course is written to build a bridge between the beginner and more advanced studies. After completing it, the reader should feel confident to read more detailed books of Seerah, Hadith, and other Islamic sciences, because the main storyline and key events will already be familiar.

What Is Seerah?

The Arabic word “Seerah” comes from a word that means “to walk” or “to travel.” In Islamic studies, Seerah usually refers to the studied biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, with attention to the events, places, times, and people around him.

In this course, when we say Seerah we mean the complete life story of the Prophet ﷺ as a messenger of Allah, starting from the conditions before his birth and ending with his passing from this world. It includes his personal life, his family life, his public mission, major events, and the reactions of those around him.

Seerah is different from simple storytelling. It is not only “what happened.” It is also, “What does this mean for my belief and my behavior today?” This is why scholars always read Seerah with reflection and lessons. This course will follow the same approach. It will present the events clearly, then show what a beginner can learn from them.

“Say, ‘Travel through the land and see how He began creation.’ Then Allah will produce the final creation.”
(Quran 29:20)

Just as we are told to reflect on the journey of creation, we are also encouraged to reflect on the journey of the final Messenger ﷺ, which is the Seerah.

Seerah is not just history. It is the practical explanation of Islam through the life of the final Prophet ﷺ.

Importance of Studying the Life of the Prophet ﷺ

Studying Seerah is not an optional extra for a Muslim. It is closely tied to faith, love of Allah, and obedience to His Messenger ﷺ. There are several reasons why the Seerah holds such a central place.

First, Allah has made the Prophet ﷺ a model for us. We are commanded to follow him, and following is not possible without knowledge.

“Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’”
(Quran 3:31)

Here, Allah connects His love with following the Prophet ﷺ. To follow him, we must know how he worshiped, how he dealt with people, and how he responded to hardship and success.

Second, Seerah protects us from false images of the Prophet ﷺ. Some people accuse him of things that do not suit his noble character. Others praise him, but in ways that are not correct or are based on weak stories. When we know the authentic Seerah, we can distinguish truth from falsehood, and respect the Prophet ﷺ in the way that Allah and His Messenger have taught.

Third, Seerah strengthens faith. When you learn how he and his companions held firmly to Islam despite persecution, your own struggles appear in a new light. When you see how the early Muslims faced fear, hunger, and loss and yet remained faithful, your heart gains certainty that Allah supports those who are patient.

“Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while there has not yet come to you the example of those who passed away before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even] the Messenger and those who believed with him said, ‘When is the help of Allah?’ Unquestionably, the help of Allah is near.”
(Quran 2:214)

Fourth, Seerah gives balance. Without it, a person might focus only on one part of Islam, such as worship, and ignore other parts, such as justice and mercy. The life of the Prophet ﷺ shows how all aspects of Islam work together. He was a worshiper in the night, a leader in the day, a husband, a father, a neighbor, a teacher, a judge, and a friend. His Seerah shows how all these roles can be guided by faith.

Fifth, for those who wish to invite others to Islam, Seerah is the best guide. The Prophet ﷺ is the first and greatest caller to Allah in this Ummah. The way he introduced Islam, his patience with those who opposed him, his wisdom in timing and speech, and his deep mercy even when he had power, all show us how to speak about Islam to others.

“There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer. He is concerned over you, and to the believers he is kind and merciful.”
(Quran 9:128)

Finally, studying Seerah is itself a form of sending blessings and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ. When you read about his life with respect and love, your heart remembers him, and your tongue is more likely to say “Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.”

Knowing the Seerah strengthens love for the Prophet ﷺ, corrects our understanding of Islam, and helps us follow him in every part of life.

Methodology and Sources

A serious study of Seerah must be based on reliable sources and clear methods. This course, even though it is for beginners, follows the general approach of the scholars of Ahl al Sunnah in studying the biography of the Prophet ﷺ.

The most important sources are the Quran and the authentic Sunnah. The Quran mentions key events from the life of the Prophet ﷺ, such as the beginning of revelation, the Hijrah, battles, and certain personal and public matters. These verses are the most certain and foundational parts of Seerah.

“Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest.”
(Quran 48:1)
“Did He not find you an orphan and give you refuge, and find you unaware and guide you, and find you poor and make you self-sufficient?”
(Quran 93:6–8)

The Sunnah, which includes authentic Hadith and reports from the companions, gives detailed descriptions of the Prophet’s words, actions, and approvals. The most famous collections, such as Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and other reliable works, contain many Seerah reports.

“The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Convey from me, even if it is one verse.’”
(Al Bukhari)

Beyond these, early Seerah works by Muslim scholars gather the events of the Prophet’s life in order. Some of the earliest and most known names are Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Hisham, then al Waqidi, Ibn Sa’d, and later scholars like Ibn Kathir and Ibn al Qayyim. Modern authors have also written organized and accessible Seerah books, often based on these earlier works and on Hadith criticism.

In this course, the approach is as follows. First, to give priority to what is established in the Quran and authentic Hadith. Second, to accept reports from classical Seerah books when they are supported by evidence or are not in conflict with stronger sources. Third, to avoid weak or strange stories that present the Prophet ﷺ in a way that does not fit his noble character or that scholars have clearly criticized.

Because this is a beginner course, we will not go into the technical science of Hadith grading in detail. Names of narrators and chains will not usually be mentioned. Instead, the content has been prepared by relying on the works of trusted scholars who have already examined the authenticity of the reports.

When verses of the Quran are quoted, they are presented in translation, while the Arabic is assumed to be available in the Mushaf. When Hadith are quoted, the source collection will be mentioned in simple form where useful, without complex reference numbers, so the reader is not overloaded.

The main foundations of Seerah are the Quran and authentic Sunnah. Other Seerah books are used with care and in light of these primary sources.

How to Read This Course

To benefit from Seerah, the way you read it is almost as important as the content itself. This course is arranged in parts and chapters that follow the main stages of the Prophet’s life, from the world before Islam to his passing and legacy. Each major section focuses on what is specific to that period, without repeating what will be explained elsewhere.

You do not need previous knowledge to begin. The language is simple, and difficult terms are either explained in context or gathered in the glossary at the end. However, there are certain habits that will help you benefit more.

First, read with intention. Before you start, remind yourself that you are learning the life of the beloved Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Make the intention to increase your faith, your love for him, and your desire to follow him. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Actions are only by intentions, and every person will have only what he intended.”
(Al Bukhari and Muslim)

A sincere intention turns your reading into worship.

Second, read with respect and presence of heart. When you come across his name, say “peace and blessings be upon him.” Pause and think when you read about his hardships or his patience. Imagine the scene, but do not treat it as entertainment. This is the most honored life in human history.

Third, move steadily. You do not have to finish quickly. It is better to understand a smaller portion well, and to think about how it applies to your life, than to rush through many pages without reflection. If possible, keep a notebook. After a chapter, write a few lines on what you learned and how you might act differently because of it.

Fourth, if something is unclear, be patient. Some questions will be answered in later chapters. Other questions might require deeper study in other sciences. For a beginner course, not every detail of every event can be discussed. The goal is to give a clear path, not to answer every advanced issue.

Fifth, try to connect what you learn to your daily actions. When you read about his honesty before prophethood, think about your own trustworthiness. When you see his mercy to children, think about how you treat those younger than you. When you see his courage in hardship, remember your own tests and ask Allah for similar patience.

“So let those beware who oppose his command, lest a trial strike them or a painful punishment.”
(Quran 24:63)

Finally, remember that this course is only a beginning. At the end, some recommended readings are listed. You are encouraged to continue your journey, to read more detailed Seerah works, and to listen to reliable teachers. The Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ is a lifelong study, and every revisit brings new insights.

Read Seerah with sincere intention, respect, reflection, and the desire to act upon what you learn.

Closing of the Preface

This course invites you to walk, step by step, through the life of Muhammad ﷺ, the final Messenger of Allah. You will see the world before his coming, his noble birth and childhood, his preparation, the beginning of revelation, the hardships in Makkah, the migration to Madinah, the building of a new community, the challenges of battles, the opening of Makkah, and the final completion of the message.

Allah sent him as a mercy to all worlds.

“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Quran 21:107)

As you begin the next chapter, ask Allah to open your heart, to increase your knowledge and love of His Messenger ﷺ, and to make this journey through the Seerah a light that guides your path in this world and the next.
