3.2 Infancy and Early Childhood

A New Phase of Mercy on Earth

The infancy and early childhood of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ form a gentle and beautiful chapter in his life, where Allah prepared him in quiet, simple surroundings far from the noise of Makkah. These early years show both his human vulnerability as a child and the special care and protection of Allah that surrounded him from the very beginning.

The Prophet ﷺ said about himself in adulthood:

«إِنَّمَا أَنَا رَحْمَةٌ مُهْدَاةٌ»
“I am only a gifted mercy.”
(Reported by al-Hakim)

This mercy was present even in his cradle and in the desert of Banu Sa‘d, in the arms of those who nursed and raised him in his earliest days.

The Custom of Nursing and the Desert Environment

In pre-Islamic Arabia, it was a widespread custom that noble families of Makkah would send their newborn children to live with Bedouin tribes in the desert for a few years. They believed that life in the open desert produced stronger bodies, purer language, and a more independent and upright character. Makkah was a busy trading city with many visitors and influences, and the desert was seen as a safer, cleaner, and more natural place for a child to grow.

Allah chose that His final Messenger ﷺ would also be raised for part of his childhood in this environment. This was not a coincidence. It was part of the divine preparation that would give him clarity of speech, strength of body, and simplicity of life, all of which would shape his personality and mission.

The Quran reminds us that Allah’s care begins from the earliest stages of life:

﴿أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَى﴾
“Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] shelter?”
(Surat ad-Duha 93:6)

That shelter and protection included the loving arms of his nursing mother in the desert, the home of Banu Sa‘d, and every person Allah placed around him in those delicate early years.

Love and Care in the Earliest Days

After his blessed birth in Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ first received care from the women of his own family. His mother Aminah bint Wahb held him with the tenderness of a widowed mother who had already lost her husband before his birth. His grandfather Abdul Muttalib was overjoyed by his arrival and showed deep affection for him, as described by later reports. Within this family circle, the newborn Muhammad ﷺ was loved, protected, and honored.

Very early in his life, nursing arrangements followed the pattern known among the Arabs. A local woman named Thuwaybah, a servant of Abu Lahab, is reported to have nursed him for a short period. This early phase shows that even in simple, practical matters like feeding and childcare, Allah was arranging for him ﷺ to receive care from multiple homes and hearts, each playing a part in his upbringing.

As he moved from the immediate circle of his mother to the wider world of the desert tribe that would nurse him, his early childhood entered a new chapter, one that would leave deep marks on his language, health, and character.

The Gentle Rhythm of Early Childhood

The early years of the Prophet ﷺ, from his infancy through his small childhood in the desert, passed in an atmosphere of calm, purity, and simplicity. There was no palace, no luxury, and no worldly power around him, yet he was surrounded by sincerity, by the natural world, and by the everyday struggles of desert life.

Later in his life, the Quran described his upbringing in general terms, pointing to the way Allah guided and nurtured him throughout:

﴿وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَى ۝ وَوَجَدَكَ عَائِلًا فَأَغْنَى﴾
“And He found you seeking [the way], and guided you.
And He found you in need, and made [you] self-sufficient.”
(Surat ad-Duha 93:7–8)

These verses are not about this specific age only, but they remind us that from infancy onward, his life was a story of being gently guided and cared for by Allah. His earliest memories would not be of crowds and markets, but of skies, open land, and the warm embrace of those who raised him.

During this period, his body grew, his senses opened to the world, and his personality began to show. Reports from his later nursing family describe the presence of blessing in their home and animals, a subject that belongs to another chapter in detail, but here we simply note that his very presence as a child was associated with increase in good, comfort, and ease.

In the Seerah, the infancy and early childhood of the Prophet ﷺ are not just a set of dates and places. They are a sign that Allah prepares His chosen servants gently, step by step, surrounding them with protection, love, and hidden blessings from the very beginning of their lives.

Growing Under Divine Protection

A key feature of his early childhood is the clear sign of divine protection. While every child is weak and dependent, Muhammad ﷺ was both like other children in his physical needs and at the same time specially guarded from harm that would affect his pure nature and future mission.

Allah says:

﴿إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ﴾
“[Satan said:] Except Your chosen servants among them.”
(Surat al-Hijr 15:40)

The scholars explain that the Prophets are among these chosen servants, protected from Satan’s influence in a special way. That protection begins early, and it unfolds quietly in the small incidents of their childhood that show how Allah preserves them.

In the early years of the Prophet ﷺ, this guarding was not only spiritual, it was also practical and physical. Events and changes in his guardianship, moves between different homes, and sudden returns from one place to another all worked together to keep him safe and to place him exactly where Allah wanted him to be.

These early stages of his life remind the believer that Allah’s plan reaches into the cradle and that what appears to be ordinary family decisions are, in reality, part of a much greater wisdom from the Lord of the worlds.

The Foundation of a Prophetic Life

By the time his early childhood phase drew to a close, the Prophet ﷺ had already experienced a variety of homes and caregivers. He had known the love of his mother, the honor of his grandfather, and the simplicity and roughness of desert life. His tongue had been shaped by pure Arabic, his body strengthened by natural surroundings, and his heart prepared through both comfort and difficulty.

The Quran later described his overall upbringing as a form of special training:

﴿وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ رُوحًا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا﴾
“And thus We have revealed to you a spirit of Our command.”
(Surat ash-Shura 42:52)

Before that revelation came, Allah had already shaped the human vessel that would carry this “spirit,” the heart, mind, and character of Muhammad ﷺ. His infancy and early childhood were the soft beginning of this preparation, hidden from the public eye yet filled with signs for those who reflect.

For absolute beginners studying the Seerah, it is important to realize that the story of the Prophet ﷺ does not truly begin only with revelation at the age of forty. It begins in the arms of his mother, in the homes that nursed him, in the landscapes that he first saw as a child, and in the unseen care of Allah that wrapped him from the first day of his life.
