Talking about Family and People in Urdu

In this chapter you will learn how to talk about people in your life in simple Urdu. We will focus on family members and very basic ways to mention them in short sentences. Detailed grammar about possession will come later, so here we will mostly give you useful ready‑made patterns and vocabulary.

The most common word for “family” in Urdu is:

Here are the most important close family words with pronunciation and gender. Gender will be used more deeply in later chapters, but here it is good to notice which words are grammatically masculine or feminine.

Urdu has very specific words for relatives from the father’s side and mother’s side. Here you will meet the most common ones. You do not need to memorize all at once, but start recognizing them.

Simple Patterns to Introduce Family Members

Detailed sentence structure is handled in a later unit, so here you can use these simple “ready patterns” to speak about your family and people.

Pattern 1: “This is my …”

Use this pattern when you show a photo or introduce a person.

Pattern:
یہ میرا / میری … ہے۔
ye mera / meri … hai.
Use میرا mera before many masculine words, and میری meri before many feminine words.

Some useful examples:

Pattern 2: “He / She is my …”

To point to someone already known in the context:

Dialogue 1: Asking about Siblings

A: کیا آپ کے بھائی ہیں؟
kya aap ke bhaai hain?
“Do you have brothers?”

B: ہاں، میرے دو بھائی ہیں۔
haan, mere do bhaai hain.
“Yes, I have two brothers.”

A: کیا آپ کی بہنیں ہیں؟
kya aap ki behnen hain?
“Do you have sisters?”

B: نہیں، میری کوئی بہن نہیں ہے۔
nahin, meri koi behn nahin hai.
“No, I do not have any sister.”

Dialogue 2: Talking about Parents

A: یہ کون ہیں؟
ye kaun hain?
“Who is this?”

B: یہ میری والدہ ہیں۔
ye meri waalida hain.
“This is my mother.”

A: اور یہ کون ہیں؟
aur ye kaun hain?
“And who is this?”

B: یہ میرے والد ہیں۔
ye mere waalid hain.
“This is my father.”

Dialogue 3: Simple Family Description

A: آپ کی فیملی کہاں ہے؟
aap ki family kahan hai?
“Where is your family?”

B: میری فیملی لاہور میں ہے۔
meri family Lahore mein hai.
“My family is in Lahore.”

A: کیا آپ کے بچے ہیں؟
kya aap ke bachche hain?
“Do you have children?”
