3.1 Verb Aspects and Continuous Tenses

Overview of Aspect and Continuous Actions in Urdu

In Urdu, tense tells you when something happens, and aspect tells you how it happens, for example whether it is finished, ongoing, repeated, or temporary. This chapter focuses on continuous and related aspects that use the forms رہا، رہی، رہے and build on tense forms you have already met.

We will move from basic recognition of these patterns to using them naturally in present, past, and future, and then contrast them with habitual and simple aspects.

Key idea:
In Urdu, aspect is usually shown by a participle (such as رہا / رہی / رہے, or چکا / چکی / چکے, or the bare verb stem for habitual) that combines with the correct form of the verb ہے / تھا / ہوگا.

The Continuous Marker: رہا، رہی، رہے

Form and agreement

The continuous marker comes in three main forms:

FormGenderNumberTypical subject
رہاmasculinesingularوہ (he), یہ (this man), علی
رہیfemininesingularوہ (she), یہ (this woman), فاطمہ
رہےmasculinepluralوہ لوگ (they), ہم (we, mixed or all male), تم / آپ (you, plural)

The continuous participle agrees with the logical subject in gender and number.

Examples with the verb جانا “to go”:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Urdu (Nastaliq)
He is going.وہ جا رہا ہے۔وہ جا رہا ہے۔
She is going.وہ جا رہی ہے۔وہ جا رہی ہے۔
They are going.وہ جا رہے ہیں۔وہ جا رہے ہیں۔
We are going.ہم جا رہے ہیں۔ہم جا رہے ہیں۔
I am going. (male speaker)میں جا رہا ہوں۔میں جا رہا ہوں۔
I am going. (female speaker)میں جا رہی ہوں۔میں جا رہی ہوں۔

Notice how the form of رہا changes with the subject, and the auxiliary verb (ہے, ہوں, ہیں) changes according to person and number, as usual.

Present Continuous: “Am / Is / Are Doing”

Structure

For present continuous, use:

Formula:
Subject + verb stem + رہا / رہی / رہے + present form of “to be” (ہوں، ہے، ہیں)
Meaning: am / is / are doing (right now / around now).

Use the verb stem (without نا) before رہا / رہی / رہے.

Examples with different verbs:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Urdu (Nastaliq)
I am eating. (male)میں کھا رہا ہوں۔میں کھا رہا ہوں۔
I am eating. (female)میں کھا رہی ہوں۔میں کھا رہی ہوں۔
She is reading.وہ پڑھ رہی ہے۔وہ پڑھ رہی ہے۔
He is reading.وہ پڑھ رہا ہے۔وہ پڑھ رہا ہے۔
We are studying.ہم پڑھ رہے ہیں۔ہم پڑھ رہے ہیں۔
They are speaking.وہ بات کر رہے ہیں۔وہ بات کر رہے ہیں۔
You (formal) are coming.آپ آ رہے ہیں۔آپ آ رہے ہیں۔
The child is sleeping. (boy)بچہ سو رہا ہے۔بچہ سو رہا ہے۔
The child is sleeping. (girl)بچی سو رہی ہے۔بچی سو رہی ہے۔

Note that compound verbs like بات کرنا “to talk” split: the main part takes رہا, the light verb کر stays as کر:

Present continuous with time expressions

Common time expressions that match present continuous:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Urdu (Nastaliq)
right nowابھیابھی
at this momentاس وقتاس وقت
these daysآج کلآج کل
nowadaysآج کل / آج کے دنوں میںآج کل / آج کے دنوں میں

Examples:

Past Continuous: “Was / Were Doing”

Structure

To talk about an action that was ongoing in the past, use:

Formula:
Subject + verb stem + رہا / رہی / رہے + past form of “to be” (تھا، تھی، تھے، تھیں)
Meaning: was / were doing.

The choice of رہا / رہی / رہے still follows the subject, and the past form of “to be” also agrees with the subject in gender and number.

Common past forms of “to be”:

FormUseExample
تھاmasculine singularوہ تھکا ہوا تھا۔
تھیfeminine singularوہ تھکی ہوئی تھی۔
تھےmasculine plural / mixedوہ خوش تھے۔
تھیںfeminine pluralوہ لڑکیاں کھیل رہی تھیں۔

In continuous, combine them:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Urdu (Nastaliq)
I was working. (male)میں کام کر رہا تھا۔میں کام کر رہا تھا۔
I was working. (female)میں کام کر رہی تھی۔میں کام کر رہی تھی۔
He was sleeping.وہ سو رہا تھا۔وہ سو رہا تھا۔
She was sleeping.وہ سو رہی تھی۔وہ سو رہی تھی۔
We were watching TV.ہم ٹی وی دیکھ رہے تھے۔ہم ٹی وی دیکھ رہے تھے۔
They were playing. (boys / mixed)وہ کھیل رہے تھے۔وہ کھیل رہے تھے۔
They were playing. (girls)وہ کھیل رہی تھیں۔وہ کھیل رہی تھیں۔
You (formal) were listening.آپ سن رہے تھے۔آپ سن رہے تھے۔

Using past continuous in context

You often use past continuous to:

  1. Set the background to another event:
    • میں کتاب پڑھ رہا تھا کہ دروازہ بجا۔
“I was reading a book when the door knocked.”
  2. Describe a temporary situation in the past:
    • ہم دو مہینے کے لیے کراچی میں رہ رہے تھے۔
“We were living in Karachi for two months.”
  3. Talk about interrupted actions:
    • وہ کھانا کھا رہی تھی کہ فون آ گیا۔
“She was eating when the phone rang.”

Notice how the continuous action forms the background, and a simple past event (like بجا, آ گیا) interrupts or happens during it.

Future Continuous: “Will Be Doing”

Structure

To talk about an action that will be going on at a future time, use:

Formula:
Subject + verb stem + رہا / رہی / رہے + future form of “to be” (ہوگا، ہوگی، ہوں گے، وغیرہ)
Meaning: will be doing.

The future form of “to be” agrees with the subject, just as simple future does.

Common future “to be” endings:

SubjectExample form of "to be"Example in English
میںہوں گا / ہوں گیI will be
تمہو گے / ہو گیyou will be (informal)
وہ / یہ (masc.)ہوگاhe / it will be
وہ / یہ (fem.)ہوگیshe / it will be
ہمہوں گےwe will be
آپ / وہ لوگہوں گے / ہوں گی (fem. group)you / they will be

Examples:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Urdu (Nastaliq)
I will be working tomorrow. (male)میں کل کام کر رہا ہوں گا۔میں کل کام کر رہا ہوں گا۔
I will be working tomorrow. (female)میں کل کام کر رہی ہوں گی۔میں کل کام کر رہی ہوں گی۔
He will be studying at 8 o’clock.وہ آٹھ بجے پڑھ رہا ہوگا۔وہ آٹھ بجے پڑھ رہا ہوگا۔
She will be sleeping then.وہ تب سو رہی ہوگی۔وہ تب سو رہی ہوگی۔
We will be traveling next week.ہم اگلے ہفتے سفر کر رہے ہوں گے۔ہم اگلے ہفتے سفر کر رہے ہوں گے۔
They will be waiting for you.وہ تمہارا انتظار کر رہے ہوں گے۔وہ تمہارا انتظار کر رہے ہوں گے۔

Future continuous is not as common in everyday Urdu as present and past continuous, but it is useful to describe actions in progress at a specific future time.

Habitual versus Ongoing Actions

Aspect is especially clear when we compare habitual actions with continuous actions.

Habitual aspect (simple present-like)

Habitual actions talk about what usually or regularly happens.

Typical Urdu patterns (without رہا) for habits:

Here the verbs (جاتا ہے، اٹھتی ہوں، پڑھتے ہیں) show habit, not a specific ongoing action right now.

Continuous aspect (ongoing / currently in progress)

Continuous describes what is happening right now or around now.

Compare:

MeaningUrdu (Roman)Explanation
I get up early. (habit)میں صبح جلدی اٹھتا ہوں۔ (male)Habitual, general truth.
I am getting up early today.میں آج جلدی اٹھ رہا ہوں۔ (male)Continuous, specific situation today.
We study Urdu. (in general)ہم اردو پڑھتے ہیں۔Habitual routine.
We are studying Urdu right now.ہم اردو پڑھ رہے ہیں۔Ongoing action now.

Another contrast with eating:

Rule of thumb:

  • Use habitual forms (like جاتا ہے، کھاتے ہیں) for routines, habits, general truths.
  • Use رہا / رہی / رہے + ہے / تھا / ہوگا for actions in progress at a specific time.

Continuous with Time Limits and Duration

Continuous forms often combine with duration expressions to say how long an action has been going on.

Common duration expressions:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Urdu (Nastaliq)
since morningصبح سےصبح سے
since yesterdayکل سےکل سے
since last yearپچھلے سال سےپچھلے سال سے
for two hoursدو گھنٹے سےدو گھنٹے سے
for many daysکئی دنوں سےکئی دنوں سے

Pattern:

Examples:

These structures in Urdu often cover what English expresses with “have been doing”, but grammatically they are built like present continuous with an added time phrase.

Continuous with Different Types of Verbs

Action verbs vs state verbs

Some English verbs like “know” or “believe” are not normally used in continuous. In Urdu, you also usually avoid continuous with purely stative meanings.

Typical action verbs that work naturally with continuous:

Verb (infinitive)Meaning
کرناto do
جاناto go
آناto come
کھاناto eat
پیناto drink
پڑھناto read / study
لکھناto write
کھیلناto play
دوڑناto run
بات کرناto talk

Examples:

Typical state verbs such as ہونا “to be”, جاننا “to know”, پسند ہونا “to like” are usually not put in continuous for their basic meanings:

However, when a verb can have both a state and activity meaning, continuous is possible:

Continuous and Focus on Progress versus Completion

Continuous aspect focuses on progress. Urdu also has perfective and completive aspects, like چکا / چکی / چکے, but those belong to another chapter. Here, just notice how continuous contrasts with a “finished” idea.

Compare:

EnglishUrdu (Roman)Aspect
I am writing a letter.میں خط لکھ رہا ہوں۔Continuous, in progress.
I have written the letter.میں خط لکھ چکا ہوں۔ (male)Completed, result.
They were cooking food.وہ کھانا پکا رہے تھے۔Continuous, past.
They cooked the food.انہوں نے کھانا پکایا۔Completed event.

In conversation, choosing continuous or non continuous often shows whether you care about:

Short Dialogues Using Continuous Tenses

Dialogue 1: Present continuous

A: آپ کیا کر رہے ہیں؟
A (Roman): Aap kya kar rahe hain?
“What are you doing?”

B: میں اردو پڑھ رہا ہوں۔
B (Roman): Main Urdu parh raha hoon.
“I am studying Urdu.” (male speaker)

A: کب سے پڑھ رہے ہیں؟
A (Roman): Kab se parh rahe hain?
“Since when have you been studying?”

B: دو گھنٹے سے پڑھ رہا ہوں۔
B (Roman): Do ghante se parh raha hoon.
“I have been studying for two hours.”

Dialogue 2: Past continuous background

A: کل رات آپ کیا کر رہے تھے؟
A (Roman): Kal raat aap kya kar rahe the?
“What were you doing last night?”

B: میں فلم دیکھ رہا تھا۔
B (Roman): Main film dekh raha tha.
“I was watching a movie.”

A: کب سوئے؟
A (Roman): Kab soye?
“When did you sleep?”

B: میں گیارہ بجے سو گیا۔
B (Roman): Main gyarah baje so gaya.
“I slept at eleven o’clock.”

Note how continuous sets the background, and a simple perfective verb (سو گیا) gives the completed action.

Dialogue 3: Future continuous plan

A: کل شام آپ کیا کر رہے ہوں گے؟
A (Roman): Kal shaam aap kya kar rahe honge?
“What will you be doing tomorrow evening?”

B: میں دوستوں کے ساتھ کرکٹ کھیل رہا ہوں گا۔
B (Roman): Main doston ke saath cricket khel raha hoon ga.
“I will be playing cricket with friends.”

A: پھر ہم کل نہیں مل سکیں گے۔
A (Roman): Phir hum kal nahin mil saken ge.
“Then we will not be able to meet tomorrow.”
