Introduction to Prehistory

Prehistory is the vast stretch of human experience before the invention of writing. It covers hundreds of thousands of years, far more than the relatively short period that written documents describe. When people began to keep written records, their actions and ideas started to be preserved in texts, laws, inscriptions, and books. Everything that happened before that turning point belongs to prehistory.

Because there are no written accounts from prehistoric people, historians cannot read their diaries, letters, or chronicles. Instead, they must look for other kinds of evidence and learn to interpret the traces that distant generations left behind. This makes prehistory different in method, in sources, and in the kinds of questions we can answer with confidence.

Understanding prehistory is important because it shows how humans emerged, spread across the globe, developed tools, learned to control fire, formed communities, and eventually experimented with farming and settled life. All later history rests on foundations that were laid in this unwritten age.

How We Study Prehistory

Since prehistoric people left no writing, the study of prehistory depends on disciplines that deal with material remains, the earth itself, and the human body. Each branch contributes a different kind of information. When combined, they allow researchers to build a picture of lives that ended thousands or even millions of years ago.

Archaeology focuses on objects and physical traces. Archaeologists excavate sites where people once lived or gathered. They uncover stone tools, bones, hearths, pottery, and the remains of buildings. From the position of these finds in the ground and from their shapes and materials, archaeologists infer how people lived and how their ways of life changed over time.

Paleontology and related fields study ancient life more broadly, not only humans but also animals and plants of the distant past. Fossil remains of early human ancestors, of animals they hunted, and of the environments in which they lived help to place human development within a longer story of evolution.

Anthropology examines human cultures and societies. For prehistory, anthropologists often compare what is found in the ground with the customs of more recent traditional societies, in order to suggest how prehistoric people might have organized family life, work, belief, and leadership. Such comparisons must be done carefully, but they give clues where direct evidence is thin.

The natural sciences also play a central role. Chemistry and physics contribute methods that can measure age. A key method is radiocarbon dating, which is based on the radioactive decay of carbon within once living material.

Radiocarbon dating rule: If an organism once contained carbon and died less than about $50{,}000$ years ago, its remaining $^{14}\text{C}$ atoms can be measured and used to estimate the time of death, using the predictable decay rate.

Other techniques examine trapped electrons, tree rings, or layers in lakes and ice. Geology interprets layers of rock and soil and shows how landscapes changed. Genetics, especially the study of ancient DNA, reveals relationships between populations, movements of people, and some inherited traits.

Because each method has limits, prehistory is built from many partial views, combined like pieces of a puzzle. Researchers must always judge how secure their conclusions are and remain ready to revise them when new evidence appears.

Time and Periods in Prehistory

Historians divide prehistory into broad periods to make sense of very long spans of time. These divisions are based mainly on changes in technology and ways of life, not on written events or political rulers. For this course, prehistory is outlined through the appearance of humans, their tools, and the rise of agriculture and early civilization.

A central distinction is between the Stone Age and later ages that saw the widespread use of metals. In the Stone Age, people used stone, bone, and wood as their main materials for tools and weapons. Over many generations, stone tools became more refined and specialized. Within the Stone Age, there are further divisions that are based on typical tools and lifestyles. These will be explored separately, but it is important to know that such period names are modern labels, not terms that prehistoric people used themselves.

The end of prehistory in any region often coincides with the arrival or invention of writing in that area. For example, in some parts of the Middle East, prehistory ends earlier than in regions where writing systems appeared much later. This means that prehistory does not end at the same time everywhere on Earth. Instead, it depends on local developments.

Evidence from Objects, Bones, and Landscapes

The sources for prehistory are mainly physical. Objects that people made or altered, the remains of their bodies, and the traces they left on landscapes all contribute separate pieces of information. By examining these carefully and placing them in order, it becomes possible to follow long term change.

Stone tools are among the most important objects. They survive when wood and fibers decay. A simple chipped stone can show how people cut or scraped materials. More advanced tools can hint at planning, craftsmanship, and teaching between generations. Broken pieces must often be reassembled in thought, like a three dimensional puzzle.

Bones tell different stories. Human skeletons reveal age at death, sex, injuries, diseases, diet, and sometimes habits such as repeated heavy labor. Animal bones show which animals were hunted or herded. Cut marks and breaks on animal bones can prove that humans processed them for meat or marrow.

Caves, campsites, and early dwellings give information about shelter and social life. Hearths and burnt areas show the controlled use of fire. Layers of ash can be dated and compared. The arrangement of spaces within shelters, such as separate areas for sleeping or working, suggests how people organized daily tasks.

Landscapes themselves carry traces of human presence. Footprints preserved in mud that turned to stone, paths worn into the ground, and early clearings in forests reveal movement and land use. Pollen grains and plant remains allow researchers to reconstruct ancient vegetation and climate. This environmental evidence shows the conditions in which prehistoric people lived and how they adapted.

Prehistoric art, such as paintings on cave walls or carvings in bone or stone, opens a rare window into thought and imagination. Animals, human figures, and abstract patterns suggest stories, beliefs, and shared symbols. Because there are no written explanations, interpretation is cautious, but such images show that prehistoric people observed their world closely and could express ideas in visual form.

Geography and the Spread of Humanity

Prehistory is not limited to one region but covers the entire inhabited world. As human ancestors evolved and modern humans appeared, they moved into many different environments. This global movement is central to the story of prehistory.

Early hominids lived in parts of Africa and gradually adapted to varied conditions. Over long periods, some groups left Africa and spread into Eurasia. Much later, modern humans expanded into Europe, Asia, Australia, and eventually the Americas and the Pacific islands. Each new region brought new challenges. Cold climates required better clothing and shelter. Forests and plains favored different hunting and gathering strategies. Coastal areas allowed people to depend more on fish and shellfish.

The timing and routes of these movements are revealed through a combination of fossil finds, stone tools, genetic evidence, and the dating of early sites. Different regions entered major changes, such as the adoption of farming, at different times. For this reason, the same date can correspond to very different stages of development in different parts of the world. While some regions were experimenting with crops and herds, others still relied entirely on wild resources.

This uneven pattern is a key feature of prehistory. It reminds us that there was never a single path that all humans followed at the same rate. Instead, human groups faced particular conditions and opportunities, and their choices shaped many possible ways of living.

From Prehistory to History

The line between prehistory and history is defined by writing, but the transition itself was gradual. For a long time, societies without writing existed alongside societies that had begun to record information. Some communities used simple marks for counting or ownership before full writing systems emerged. Others adopted writing from neighbors after centuries of contact.

Writing transformed how information could be stored and shared. Oral memory no longer had to carry all laws, stories, and records. Temples, palaces, and merchants began to keep written accounts of goods, land, and agreements. Rulers had their names carved on monuments. Religious texts and myths were written down and copied. Once this happened, later historians could use these texts to reconstruct events, beliefs, and institutions in much greater detail.

The end of prehistory in any region is closely linked to this change. Before written records, our view of the past depends on material traces and scientific analysis. After writing appears, a new kind of evidence joins them and allows more precise dating, names of individuals, and reported events.

Yet prehistory does not disappear when writing begins. Many prehistoric ways of life, such as hunting and gathering or small scale farming, survived far into historical periods. The habits, beliefs, and knowledge that people developed before writing continued to influence their descendants. In this sense, prehistory is not just a remote and closed chapter. It is the long background against which all later history must be understood.

The Place of Prehistory in the Study of History

Although prehistory seems remote, it addresses questions that are central to understanding humanity. It asks how beings with minds like ours first appeared and how they coped with the world. It studies the origin of family life, cooperation, tool making, and symbolic thought. It follows the first experiments that led from mobile hunting and gathering to settled villages and then to the possibility of large, complex societies.

Prehistory also teaches how to think about evidence in situations where information is incomplete. It shows how researchers build arguments from objects and patterns rather than from written descriptions. This kind of reasoning is useful throughout the study of history, because even later periods often have gaps, silences, or one sided written accounts.

In this course, later chapters will explore specific stages within prehistory, from the first emergence of humans to the development of agriculture and the birth of civilization. Each stage will focus on what distinguishes it and how it contributed to the gradual transformation of human life. By the time the story reaches societies that left written records, the deep roots laid in prehistory will already be in place.
