3.2.1 School and university systems

Overview of Education in German‑speaking Countries

German, Austrian, and Swiss school and university systems share many similarities but also have important differences. At B1 level, you do not need every detail, but you should understand the most common school types, degrees, and vocabulary that appear in conversations, texts, and forms.

This chapter focuses on typical structures and terms that you will meet in real life and in B1 exams. It prepares you to describe your own education in German and to understand others when they talk about school and university.

Important: Many words for school types are written with capital letters in German because they are nouns, for example: die Grundschule, das Gymnasium, die Universität.

Compulsory School and Early Education

In German‑speaking countries, children usually attend kindergarten before they go to school. Kindergarten is not normally compulsory, but primary school is.

In Germany and Austria, compulsory schooling (die Schulpflicht) starts at about 6 years and lasts about 9 or 10 years. In Switzerland, the details depend on the canton, but the idea is similar: a long period where every child must attend school.

You will often see the word Schulwesen (school system) or Bildungssystem (education system) in texts that describe how this is organized.

Primary Education

The first stage is primary school.

Typical terms:

German termExplanation in English
die Grundschuleprimary school (Germany)
die Volksschuleprimary / basic school (Austria, also includes lower level)
die Primarschuleprimary school (common in Switzerland)
der Unterrichtlessons, teaching
das Schulfachschool subject

Primary school usually covers grades 1 to 4 in most German federal states, sometimes 1 to 6. After that, pupils move to different types of secondary schools, often based on performance and teacher recommendations.

Secondary School Types

After primary school, the system becomes more differentiated. The names and exact structures differ between Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, but some types appear often in texts and conversations.

Main Secondary School Types in Germany

The traditional German system has three main secondary school tracks.

School typeTypical aim
die Hauptschulemore practical orientation, leads to vocational paths
die Realschulemiddle level, mix of theory and practice
das Gymnasiummore academic orientation, leads to university entrance

Today, many federal states also have:

German termExplanation in English
die Gesamtschulecomprehensive school, combines different levels
die Gemeinschaftsschulecommunity school, similar idea to Gesamtschule

At Gymnasium, pupils usually study longer foreign languages, more advanced mathematics, and academic subjects. At the end, they do the Abitur, which is the general university entrance qualification.

Important: Das Abitur is the German secondary school leaving exam that qualifies you for university. The short form is often Abi in spoken language.

Secondary School in Austria and Switzerland

In Austria, you will often see:

German termExplanation in English
die Neue Mittelschule (NMS)lower secondary school (now often called Mittelschule)
das Gymnasium / AHSacademic secondary school, leads to Matura
die Berufsschulevocational school, usually combined with an apprenticeship (Lehre)

In Switzerland, the terms vary by canton, but typical words are:

German termExplanation in English
die Sekundarschulelower secondary school, different performance levels
das Gymnasiumacademic secondary school, leads to Matura or Maturität
die Berufsschulevocational school during an apprenticeship

Austria and Switzerland use the word Matura or Maturität for the final exam that allows university study.

Important: Die Matura / die Maturität is the Austrian and Swiss equivalent of the German Abitur.

Final Exams and School Certificates

At the end of compulsory schooling or at different levels, pupils receive certificates that are important for jobs or further education.

Common terms:

German termExplanation in English
das Zeugnisreport card, school certificate
das Abschlusszeugnisleaving certificate
der Schulabschlusscompleted level of schooling
die Notegrade / mark (for example: eine gute Note, eine Eins)
die Prüfungexam
schriftliche Prüfungwritten exam
mündliche Prüfungoral exam

For university entrance, the most important certificate is the Abitur or Matura. For vocational training, other types of Abschlusszeugnis are also important.

Vocational Education and Training

A very special feature of education in German‑speaking countries is the strong dual system of vocational education.

The dual system combines:

German termExplanation in English
die Ausbildungvocational training, usually after school
die Lehreapprenticeship (especially in Austria and southern Germany)
der Auszubildendetrainee, apprentice (short: der Azubi)
die Berufsschulevocational school where apprentices go part‑time
der Ausbildungsbetriebcompany that trains apprentices

In the dual system, you work in a company and at the same time go to a vocational school. This path is very common for many professions, for example in trade, crafts, and business.

Important: Die Ausbildung / Lehre is not the same as university study. It is practical training for a profession, often in the dual system.

University Entrance and Higher Education

To study at a university, you usually need a higher school leaving certificate.

Key entrance terms:

German termExplanation in English
die Hochschulreifegeneral term for university entrance qualification
die Allgemeine Hochschulreifegeneral entrance for all subjects (for example: Abitur)
die Fachhochschulreifeentrance qualification for universities of applied sciences
die Studienberechtigungright to study, admission qualification

You may also see the word NC (Numerus clausus). This means there is a limit on the number of students, and you often need very good grades to get a place.

Types of Higher Education Institutions

There are different types of institutions in higher education. They are not all the same.

Common terms:

German termExplanation in English
die Universität (Uni)university, strong focus on theory and research
die Hochschulehigher education institution, general word
die Fachhochschule (FH)university of applied sciences, more practical
die Technische Universität (TU)technical university, focus on engineering, technology
die Kunsthochschuleacademy of arts
die Musikhochschuleacademy of music
die Pädagogische Hochschuleuniversity for teacher education (some regions)

In everyday language, people often say "Ich studiere an der Uni" or "an der FH".

Important: Studieren is used for university study. For school you use zur Schule gehen, eine Schule besuchen, but not studieren.

Study Programs, Degrees, and Structure

Modern higher education in German‑speaking countries is usually organized in Bachelor and Master cycles, plus later doctoral studies.

Typical vocabulary:

German termExplanation in English
der Studiengangdegree course, study program
das Studiumuniversity studies in general
das Fach / das Studienfachsubject, field of study
das Hauptfachmajor subject
das Nebenfachminor subject
der Bachelorfirst university degree (usually 3–4 years)
der Mastersecond degree (usually 1–2 years)
das Staatsexamenstate exam for some professions (law, medicine, teaching)
die Promotiondoctoral studies, PhD

A study program is usually divided into semesters.

German termExplanation in English
das Semestersemester
das Wintersemesterwinter semester
das Sommersemestersummer semester
die Vorlesunglecture
das Seminarseminar (smaller, interactive course)
die Übungpractice class, exercise class
die Klausurwritten exam at university

Financing and Access

For many students, money and access are important topics. You will meet specific terms in information texts and on websites.

Common words:

German termExplanation in English
die Studiengebührentuition fees
der Semesterbeitragsemester fee (often for administration and student union)
das Stipendiumscholarship
BAföGGerman state support for students and pupils
die Bewerbungapplication
sich bewerben um / fürto apply for something
die Zulassungadmission
zugelassen werdento be admitted

Some federal states in Germany have no general tuition fees at public universities. In Austria and Switzerland there are usually moderate fees. International students often pay more.

Comparing Systems and Talking About Your Education

To compare education systems or to describe your own education in German, it helps to know some common comparison phrases, although grammar is treated in other chapters. Here you mainly need the key nouns and typical collocations when people compare.

Useful patterns (simplified):

German phraseTypical use in English
Im deutschen Schulsystem …In the German school system …
In meinem Heimatland ist es anders. In my home country it is different.
Nach der Grundschule geht man auf …After primary school you go to …
Mit dem Abitur kann man …With the Abitur you can …
