1.10.2 Common verbs

Overview

In this chapter you will meet very common Urdu verbs that you can start using immediately in simple present tense sentences. You already know basic sentence structure and some present tense forms, so here we will focus on:

• Useful everyday verbs in their dictionary form (masculine, infinitive).
• How they often combine with ہے / ہیں that you already know.
• Simple example sentences about daily life.

We will not fully explain tense systems or complex verb patterns here. You will mostly see short, practical sentences you can copy and adapt.

How Urdu Verbs Are Shown

Urdu verbs in this chapter are given in this way:

• Urdu script
• Roman Urdu (approximate pronunciation)
• English meaning

For example:

• کرنا, karna, to do

Whenever you see a verb like this, remember that the infinitive (dictionary form) in Urdu usually ends in نا, for example کرنا, جانا, سونا.

Core Action Verbs

These are basic verbs that allow you to talk about many different activities.

کرنا, *karna*, to do / to make

This is one of the most common verbs. It is very flexible and used in many expressions.

Examples:

• میں ہوم ورک کرتا ہوں۔
  main homework karta hoon.
  I do homework. (speaker male)
• میں ہوم ورک کرتی ہوں۔
  main homework karti hoon.
  I do homework. (speaker female)
• وہ کام کرتی ہے۔
  woh kaam karti hai.
  She does work / She works.
• وہ کھیل کھیلتا ہے۔
  woh khel khelta hai.
  He plays a game. (literally: He does a game.)

جانا, *jana*, to go

Use this verb to talk about going somewhere.

Examples:

• میں اسکول جاتا ہوں۔
  main school jata hoon.
  I go to school. (male)
• میں کالج جاتی ہوں۔
  main college jati hoon.
  I go to college. (female)
• ہم بازار جاتے ہیں۔
  hum bazaar jatay hain.
  We go to the market.
• وہ دفتر جاتا ہے۔
  woh daftar jata hai.
  He goes to the office.

آنا, *aana*, to come

This verb is the opposite of جانا, to go.

Examples:

• وہ گھر آتا ہے۔
  woh ghar aata hai.
  He comes home.
• وہ گھر آتی ہے۔
  woh ghar aati hai.
  She comes home.
• آپ کب آتے ہیں؟
  aap kab aatay hain?
  When do you come?
• میں ہر روز آتا ہوں۔
  main har roz aata hoon.
  I come every day. (male)

ہونا, *hona*, to be / to happen

You already know forms like ہے and ہیں. Here we just see it with other verbs and adjectives.

Examples:

• میں خوش ہوں۔
  main khush hoon.
  I am happy.
• وہ تھکا ہوا ہے۔
  woh thaka hua hai.
  He is tired.
• میٹنگ آج ہے۔
  meeting aaj hai.
  The meeting is today.

Everyday Movement and Position Verbs

These verbs help you talk about physical actions in your routine.

اٹھنا, *uthna*, to get up / to stand up

Examples:

• میں صبح سات بجے اٹھتا ہوں۔
  main subah saat bajay uthta hoon.
  I get up at seven in the morning. (male)
• میں جلدی اٹھتی ہوں۔
  main jaldi uthti hoon.
  I get up early. (female)

بیٹھنا, *baithna*, to sit

Examples:

• میں کرسی پر بیٹھتا ہوں۔
  main kursi par baithta hoon.
  I sit on the chair. (male)
• وہ یہاں بیٹھتی ہے۔
  woh yahan baithti hai.
  She sits here.

چلنا, *chalna*, to walk / to move

Examples:

• میں اسکول تک چلتا ہوں۔
  main school tak chalta hoon.
  I walk to school. (male)
• ہم آہستہ چلتے ہیں۔
  hum aahista chaltay hain.
  We walk slowly.
• وہ تیز چلتی ہے۔
  woh taiz chalti hai.
  She walks fast.

دوڑنا, *daurna*, to run

Examples:

• وہ پارک میں دوڑتا ہے۔
  woh park mein daurta hai.
  He runs in the park.
• بچے باہر دوڑتے ہیں۔
  bachay bahar daurtay hain.
  The children run outside.

Basic Daily Routine Verbs

These verbs connect directly to daily activities.

سونا, *sona*, to sleep

Examples:

• میں دیر سے سوتا ہوں۔
  main der se sota hoon.
  I sleep late. (male)
• میں جلدی سوتی ہوں۔
  main jaldi soti hoon.
  I sleep early. (female)
• بچہ سو رہا ہے۔
  bacha so raha hai.
  The child is sleeping.

جاگنا, *jagna*, to wake up

Examples:

• میں سات بجے جاگتا ہوں۔
  main saat bajay jagta hoon.
  I wake up at seven. (male)
• وہ جلدی جاگتی ہے۔
  woh jaldi jagti hai.
  She wakes up early.

نہانا, *nahana*, to bathe / to shower

Examples:

• میں صبح نہاتا ہوں۔
  main subah nahaata hoon.
  I take a bath in the morning. (male)
• وہ رات کو نہاتی ہے۔
  woh raat ko nahaati hai.
  She takes a bath at night.

کھانا, *khana*, to eat

Examples:

• میں ناشتہ کرتا ہوں۔ میں روٹی کھاتا ہوں۔
  main nashta karta hoon. main roti khata hoon.
  I have breakfast. I eat bread. (male)
• وہ چاول کھاتی ہے۔
  woh chawal khati hai.
  She eats rice.
• ہم سبزی کھاتے ہیں۔
  hum sabzi khatay hain.
  We eat vegetables.

پینا, *peena*, to drink

Examples:

• میں پانی پیتا ہوں۔
  main paani peeta hoon.
  I drink water. (male)
• وہ چائے پیتی ہے۔
  woh chai peeti hai.
  She drinks tea.
• آپ کیا پیتے ہیں؟
  aap kya peetay hain?
  What do you drink?

پڑھنا, *parhna*, to study / to read

Examples:

• میں اردو پڑھتا ہوں۔
  main Urdu parhta hoon.
  I study Urdu. (male)
• وہ کتاب پڑھتی ہے۔
  woh kitaab parhti hai.
  She reads a book.
• ہم اسکول میں پڑھتے ہیں۔
  hum school mein parhtay hain.
  We study at school.

لکھنا, *likhna*, to write

Examples:

• میں اردو لکھتا ہوں۔
  main Urdu likhta hoon.
  I write Urdu. (male)
• وہ خط لکھتی ہے۔
  woh khat likhti hai.
  She writes a letter.
• بچے ہوم ورک لکھتے ہیں۔
  bachay homework likhtay hain.
  The children write homework.

Communication Verbs

These verbs help you communicate in Urdu with people around you.

بولنا, *bolna*, to speak

Examples:

• میں اردو بولتا ہوں۔
  main Urdu bolta hoon.
  I speak Urdu. (male)
• وہ انگریزی بولتی ہے۔
  woh angrezi bolti hai.
  She speaks English.
• آپ آہستہ بولتے ہیں۔
  aap aahista boltay hain.
  You speak slowly.

سننا, *sunna*, to listen / to hear

Examples:

• میں موسیقی سنتا ہوں۔
  main moseeqi sunta hoon.
  I listen to music. (male)
• وہ ٹیچر کی بات سنتی ہے۔
  woh teacher ki baat sunti hai.
  She listens to the teacher.
• ہم خبر سنتے ہیں۔
  hum khabar suntay hain.
  We listen to the news.

کہنا, *kehna*, to say / to tell

Examples:

• میں سچ کہتا ہوں۔
  main sach kehta hoon.
  I tell the truth. (male)
• وہ سلام کہتی ہے۔
  woh salaam kehti hai.
  She says hello.
• ٹیچر کیا کہتا ہے؟
  teacher kya kehta hai?
  What does the teacher say?

پوچھنا, *poochhna*, to ask

Examples:

• میں سوال پوچھتا ہوں۔
  main sawaal poochta hoon.
  I ask a question. (male)
• آپ نام پوچھتے ہیں۔
  aap naam pochtay hain.
  You ask the name.
• وہ راستہ پوچھتا ہے۔
  woh rasta poochta hai.
  He asks the way.

Simple Mental and Feeling Verbs

These verbs help you talk about basic thoughts and feelings, very useful in daily life.

جاننا, *jaanna*, to know

Examples:

• میں جواب جانتا ہوں۔
  main jawab jaanta hoon.
  I know the answer. (male)
• وہ راستہ جانتی ہے۔
  woh rasta jaanti hai.
  She knows the way.

سمجھنا, *samajhna*, to understand

Examples:

• میں تھوڑا سمجھتا ہوں۔
  main thora samajhta hoon.
  I understand a little. (male)
• وہ اردو سمجھتی ہے۔
  woh Urdu samajhti hai.
  She understands Urdu.
• آپ بات سمجھتے ہیں؟
  aap baat samajhtay hain?
  Do you understand?

پسند کرنا, *pasand karna*, to like

This is a combination, the noun پسند plus کرنا.

Examples:

• میں اردو پسند کرتا ہوں۔
  main Urdu pasand karta hoon.
  I like Urdu. (male)
• وہ چائے پسند کرتی ہے۔
  woh chai pasand karti hai.
  She likes tea.
• ہم یہ گانا پسند کرتے ہیں۔
  hum yeh gaana pasand kartay hain.
  We like this song.

چاہنا, *chahna*, to want / to wish

Examples:

• میں پانی چاہتا ہوں۔
  main paani chahta hoon.
  I want water. (male)
• میں کتاب چاہتی ہوں۔
  main kitaab chahti hoon.
  I want a book. (female)
• آپ کیا چاہتے ہیں؟
  aap kya chahtay hain?
  What do you want?

House and Work Verbs

Very common actions at home, at work, or at school.

کھولنا, *kholna*, to open

Examples:

• میں دروازہ کھولتا ہوں۔
  main darwaaza kholta hoon.
  I open the door. (male)
• وہ کتاب کھولتی ہے۔
  woh kitaab kholti hai.
  She opens the book.

بند کرنا, *band karna*, to close / to turn off

Examples:

• وہ دروازہ بند کرتا ہے۔
  woh darwaaza band karta hai.
  He closes the door.
• لائٹ بند کریں۔
  light band karein.
  Turn off the light please.

کام کرنا, *kaam karna*, to work

Examples:

• میں دفتر میں کام کرتا ہوں۔
  main daftar mein kaam karta hoon.
  I work in an office. (male)
• وہ گھر میں کام کرتی ہے۔
  woh ghar mein kaam karti hai.
  She works at home.

خریدنا, *khareedna*, to buy

Examples:

• میں پھل خریدتا ہوں۔
  main phal khareedta hoon.
  I buy fruit. (male)
• وہ کپڑے خریدتی ہے۔
  woh kapray khareedti hai.
  She buys clothes.

دینا, *dena*, to give

Examples:

• میں کتاب دیتا ہوں۔
  main kitaab deta hoon.
  I give the book. (male)
• وہ پانی دیتی ہے۔
  woh paani deti hai.
  She gives water.

لینا, *lena*, to take

Examples:

• میں دودھ لیتا ہوں۔
  main doodh leta hoon.
  I take milk. (male)
• آپ ٹکٹ لیتے ہیں۔
  aap ticket letay hain.
  You take a ticket.
