Understanding Opinion in Urdu

At the intermediate level you can already say simple sentences in Urdu. In this chapter you focus on how to express what you think, feel, and believe, and how to react to other people’s views. The goal is to give you practical, natural phrases and patterns that you can plug into your existing grammar.

You will see Roman Urdu, Urdu script, and English meaning for the key expressions, but the explanations stay in English.

Basic “I think / I feel / I believe”

In Urdu, opinions are very often expressed with set phrases. These are polite and flexible, and you can use them in almost any situation.

Core opinion starters

All of these can be followed by a full sentence.

Pattern:

• mujhe lagta hai ke + sentence
• mere khayal mein + sentence
• meri rai mein + noun phrase or sentence

Examples:

• Roman: mujhe lagta hai ke yeh film achchi hai.
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے کہ یہ فلم اچھی ہے۔
• English: I think this movie is good.
• Roman: mere khayal mein yeh sahi faisla hai.
• Urdu: میرے خیال میں یہ صحیح فیصلہ ہے۔
• English: In my opinion this is the right decision.
• Roman: meri rai mein imtihaan mushkil nahi hai.
• Urdu: میری رائے میں امتحان مشکل نہیں ہے۔
• English: In my view the exam is not difficult.
• Roman: mera yaqeen hai ke woh sacch bol raha hai.
• Urdu: میرا یقین ہے کہ وہ سچ بول رہا ہے۔
• English: I believe that he is telling the truth.
• Roman: mujhe mehsoos hota hai ke log thak gaye hain.
• Urdu: مجھے محسوس ہوتا ہے کہ لوگ تھک گئے ہیں۔
• English: I feel that people are tired.

Softening Your Opinion

Urdu speakers usually express opinions politely and avoid sounding too direct or harsh. Some words make your opinion softer and more acceptable.

Useful softeners

Examples:

• Roman: shayad yeh sab se behtar hal hai.
• Urdu: شاید یہ سب سے بہتر حل ہے۔
• English: Maybe this is the best solution.
• Roman: mujhe aisa lagta hai ke aaj baarish hogi.
• Urdu: مجھے ایسا لگتا ہے کہ آج بارش ہوگی۔
• English: It seems to me that it will rain today.
• Roman: shakhsi tor par mujhe lagta hai ke yeh kaam mushkil hai.
• Urdu: شخصی طور پر مجھے لگتا ہے کہ یہ کام مشکل ہے۔
• English: Personally I think this work is difficult.
• Roman: pakka nahi keh sakta, lekin mere khayal mein woh intezar kar raha hai.
• Urdu: پکا نہیں کہہ سکتا، لیکن میرے خیال میں وہ انتظار کر رہا ہے۔
• English: I cannot say for sure, but in my opinion he is waiting.
• Roman: khayal to mera bhi yahi hai ke humein jaldi nikalna chahiye.
• Urdu: خیال تو میرا بھی یہی ہے کہ ہمیں جلدی نکلنا چاہیے۔
• English: I also think that we should leave soon.

Stating Likes and Dislikes as Opinions

Your preferences are also a kind of opinion. Urdu often uses special structures with pasand.

Expressing likes

Expressing dislikes politely

Examples:

• Roman: mujhe Pakistani music bohat pasand hai.
• Urdu: مجھے پاکستانی میوزک بہت پسند ہے۔
• English: I really like Pakistani music.
• Roman: mujhe itni bheer pasand nahi.
• Urdu: مجھے اتنی بھیڑ پسند نہیں۔
• English: I do not like so much crowd.
• Roman: mere khayal mein mujhe shehar se zyada gaon pasand hai.
• Urdu: میرے خیال میں مجھے شہر سے زیادہ گاؤں پسند ہے۔
• English: In my opinion I like the village more than the city.
• Roman: sach bataun, mujhe yeh gana zyada pasand nahi.
• Urdu: سچ بتاؤں، مجھے یہ گانا زیادہ پسند نہیں۔
• English: To be honest, I do not really like this song.

Giving Reasons for Your Opinion

Opinions are stronger and clearer when you explain why you think something. Here you combine opinion phrases with simple connectors of cause and effect.

Common “because” and “therefore” words

Opinion plus reason, in one sentence

Structure:

• Opinion clause + kyun ke + reason clause
• Opinion clause + is liye ke + reason clause

Examples:

• Roman: mere khayal mein yeh shehar mehnga hai, kyun ke yahan kiraye bohat zyada hain.
• Urdu: میرے خیال میں یہ شہر مہنگا ہے، کیونکہ یہاں کرائے بہت زیادہ ہیں۔
• English: I think this city is expensive because rents are very high here.
• Roman: mujhe lagta hai ke yeh kitaab achchi hai, is liye ke zubaan bohat saaf hai.
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے کہ یہ کتاب اچھی ہے، اس لئے کہ زبان بہت صاف ہے۔
• English: I think this book is good because the language is very clear.
• Roman: meri rai mein English seekhna zaroori hai, kyun ke yeh international zabaan hai.
• Urdu: میری رائے میں انگلش سیکھنا ضروری ہے، کیونکہ یہ انٹرنیشنل زبان ہے۔
• English: In my opinion learning English is important because it is an international language.

Opinion plus reason, in two sentences

You can first give your opinion, then give the reason in a second sentence with is liye or isi liye.

Examples:

• Roman: mujhe lagta hai ke woh thak gaya hai. is liye woh baat nahi kar raha.
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے کہ وہ تھک گیا ہے۔ اس لئے وہ بات نہیں کر رہا۔
• English: I think he is tired. Therefore he is not talking.
• Roman: mere khayal mein yeh film itni achchi nahi. isi liye main dobara nahi dekhna chahta.
• Urdu: میرے خیال میں یہ فلم اتنی اچھی نہیں۔ اسی لئے میں دوبارہ نہیں دیکھنا چاہتا۔
• English: In my opinion this movie is not so good. That is why I do not want to watch it again.
• Roman: mere liye family bohat important hai. isi liye main zyada time ghar par guzarta hoon.
• Urdu: میرے لئے فیملی بہت امپورٹنٹ ہے۔ اسی لئے میں زیادہ ٹائم گھر پر گزارتا ہوں۔
• English: For me family is very important. That is why I spend more time at home.
• Roman: mera yaqeen hai ke sehat sab se zaroori hai. is liye main roz walk karta hoon.
• Urdu: میرا یقین ہے کہ صحت سب سے ضروری ہے۔ اس لئے میں روز واک کرتا ہوں۔
• English: I believe health is the most important. So I walk every day.

Agreeing with Someone’s Opinion

To have a natural conversation you need simple, polite ways to say you agree. Here are set phrases you can memorize.

General agreement

Examples:

• Roman: aap theek keh rahe hain, yahan ka traffic bohat bura hai.
• Urdu: آپ ٹھیک کہہ رہے ہیں، یہاں کا ٹریفک بہت برا ہے۔
• English: You are right, the traffic here is very bad.
• Roman: ji haan, main aap se mutafiq hoon. humen jaldi nikalna chahiye.
• Urdu: جی ہاں، میں آپ سے متفق ہوں۔ ہمیں جلدی نکلنا چاہیے۔
• English: Yes, I agree with you. We should leave early.
• Roman: mujhe bhi aisa hi lagta hai ke yeh kaam aasan nahi.
• Urdu: مجھے بھی ایسا ہی لگتا ہے کہ یہ کام آسان نہیں۔
• English: I also think that this work is not easy.
• Roman: yeh baat theek hai ke Urdu mushkil lagti hai shuru mein.
• Urdu: یہ بات ٹھیک ہے کہ اردو مشکل لگتی ہے شروع میں۔
• English: It is true that Urdu seems difficult at the beginning.

Strong agreement

If you want to show that you very strongly agree, you can add words like bilkul or poori tarah.

Examples:

• Roman: bilkul aisa hi hai, waqt bohat keemti hota hai.
• Urdu: بالکل ایسا ہی ہے، وقت بہت قیمتی ہوتا ہے۔
• English: Exactly, time is very precious.
• Roman: main aap se poori tarah mutafiq hoon ke sehat par dhyan dena chahiye.
• Urdu: میں آپ سے پوری طرح متفق ہوں کہ صحت پر دھیان دینا چاہیے۔
• English: I fully agree with you that we should pay attention to health.

Polite Disagreement

In Urdu, disagreement is usually gentle. Speakers often begin with some agreement or with a soft phrase, then state their different view.

Soft disagreement phrases

Examples:

• Roman: mujhe aisa nahi lagta ke yeh itna mushkil hai.
• Urdu: مجھے ایسا نہیں لگتا کہ یہ اتنا مشکل ہے۔
• English: I do not think that it is so difficult.
• Roman: main poori tarah mutafiq nahi hoon. mere khayal mein humein pehle plan banana chahiye.
• Urdu: میں پوری طرح متفق نہیں ہوں۔ میرے خیال میں ہمیں پہلے پلان بنانا چاہیے۔
• English: I do not completely agree. In my opinion we should make a plan first.
• Roman: meri rai kuch aur hai. mere khayal mein train se jana behtar hai.
• Urdu: میری رائے کچھ اور ہے۔ میرے خیال میں ٹرین سے جانا بہتر ہے۔
• English: My opinion is different. In my view it is better to go by train.
• Roman: adab se arz hai, main mutafiq nahi hoon, kyun ke waqt bohat kam hai.
• Urdu: ادب سے عرض ہے، میں متفق نہیں ہوں، کیونکہ وقت بہت کم ہے۔
• English: With respect, I do not agree, because there is very little time.
• Roman: ho sakta hai, lekin mujhe lagta hai ke humein aur thoda intezar karna chahiye.
• Urdu: ہو سکتا ہے، لیکن مجھے لگتا ہے کہ ہمیں اور تھوڑا انتظار کرنا چاہیے۔
• English: Maybe, but I think we should wait a little more.

Partially agreeing

Sometimes you agree with part of the idea, but not all of it. This is very common in polite Urdu conversations.

Examples:

• Roman: main had tak mutafiq hoon, lekin kharch bhi dekhna hoga.
• Urdu: میں حد تک متفق ہوں، لیکن خرچ بھی دیکھنا ہوگا۔
• English: I agree to some extent, but we also have to look at the cost.
• Roman: yeh theek hai ke gaadi tez hai, lekin mujhe lagta hai ke train zyada safe hai.
• Urdu: یہ ٹھیک ہے کہ گاڑی تیز ہے، لیکن مجھے لگتا ہے کہ ٹرین زیادہ سیف ہے۔
• English: It is true that the car is fast, but I think the train is safer.
• Roman: main mutafiq hoon, lekin mere khayal mein humein kal se shuru karna chahiye.
• Urdu: میں متفق ہوں، لیکن میرے خیال میں ہمیں کل سے شروع کرنا چاہیے۔
• English: I agree, but in my opinion we should start from tomorrow.

Asking for Opinions

To keep a conversation going, you need to invite the other person to share their view.

Simple questions for opinions

Examples:

• Roman: mere khayal mein humein bus se jana chahiye. aap ka kya khayal hai?
• Urdu: میرے خیال میں ہمیں بس سے جانا چاہیے۔ آپ کا کیا خیال ہے؟
• English: In my opinion we should go by bus. What do you think?
• Roman: is faisle ke bare mein aap ki kya rai hai?
• Urdu: اس فیصلے کے بارے میں آپ کی کیا رائے ہے؟
• English: What is your opinion about this decision?
• Roman: mujhe lagta hai yeh plan theek hai. kya aap mutafiq hain?
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے یہ پلان ٹھیک ہے۔ کیا آپ متفق ہیں؟
• English: I think this plan is fine. Do you agree?
• Roman: is film ke bare mein aap kya sochte hain?
• Urdu: اس فلم کے بارے میں آپ کیا سوچتے ہیں؟
• English: What do you think about this movie?

Expressing Degree of Certainty

Sometimes an opinion is very strong, and sometimes you are not sure. Urdu uses adverbs to show this.

Showing how sure you are

Examples:

• Roman: yaqeenan yeh kaafi mushkil kaam hai.
• Urdu: یقیناً یہ کافی مشکل کام ہے۔
• English: Certainly this is quite a difficult task.
• Roman: mujhe yaqeen hai ke tum kamyab ho ge.
• Urdu: مجھے یقین ہے کہ تم کامیاب ہو گے۔
• English: I am sure that you will succeed.
• Roman: mujhe yaqeen nahi ke aaj woh aayega.
• Urdu: مجھے یقین نہیں کہ آج وہ آئے گا۔
• English: I am not sure that he will come today.
• Roman: shayad kal mausam behtar ho.
• Urdu: شاید کل موسم بہتر ہو۔
• English: Maybe the weather will be better tomorrow.
• Roman: mujhe lagta hai, lekin pakka nahi keh sakta.
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے، لیکن پکا نہیں کہہ سکتا۔
• English: I think so, but I cannot say for sure.

A

• Roman: mujhe lagta hai ke yeh film bohat lambi hai.
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے کہ یہ فلم بہت لمبی ہے۔
• English: I think this movie is very long.

B

• Roman: mujhe aisa nahi lagta. mere khayal mein kahani interesting hai, is liye time ka pata hi nahi chalta.
• Urdu: مجھے ایسا نہیں لگتا۔ میرے خیال میں کہانی انٹرسٹنگ ہے، اس لئے ٹائم کا پتہ ہی نہیں چلتا۔
• English: I do not think so. In my opinion the story is interesting, so you do not feel the time.

• Roman: ho sakta hai, lekin mujhe action films zyada pasand hain.
• Urdu: ہو سکتا ہے، لیکن مجھے ایکشن فلمز زیادہ پسند ہیں۔
• English: Maybe, but I like action films more.

Dialogue 2: Planning a trip

• Roman: mere khayal mein humein bus se jana chahiye. yeh sasti hai. aap ka kya khayal hai?
• Urdu: میرے خیال میں ہمیں بس سے جانا چاہیے۔ یہ سستی ہے۔ آپ کا کیا خیال ہے؟
• English: In my opinion we should go by bus. It is cheap. What do you think?

• Roman: main had tak mutafiq hoon, lekin meri rai mein train zyada rahatdeh hai.
• Urdu: میں حد تک متفق ہوں، لیکن میری رائے میں ٹرین زیادہ راحت دہ ہے۔
• English: I agree to some extent, but in my opinion the train is more comfortable.

• Roman: aap theek keh rahe hain. chalo phir train se chalte hain.
• Urdu: آپ ٹھیک کہہ رہے ہیں۔ چلو پھر ٹرین سے چلتے ہیں۔
• English: You are right. Then let us go by train.

• Roman: mujhe lagta hai ke Urdu ki class bohat fast hai.
• Urdu: مجھے لگتا ہے کہ اردو کی کلاس بہت فاسٹ ہے۔
• English: I think the Urdu class is very fast.
