Abstract Relations with Complex Postpositions

In earlier chapters you worked with basic postpositions such as میں “in,” پر “on, at,” سے “from, with,” and تک “up to.” In this chapter you focus on complex postpositions that express abstract, non-physical relations such as “about,” “because of,” “regarding,” “in spite of,” “according to,” and similar meanings.

Most of these are built from a noun + a simple postposition and are used after an oblique noun or pronoun, just like other postpositions.

Complex postpositions of “about” and “regarding”

کے بارے میں – about, regarding, concerning

This is probably the most common way to say “about” something.

Structure:
X کے بارے میں = “about X” / “regarding X”

X is in the oblique (so pronouns change form).

Examples with nouns:

• یہ کتاب اردو زبان کے بارے میں ہے۔
  “This book is about the Urdu language.”
• ہم امتحان کے بارے میں بات کر رہے ہیں۔
  “We are talking about the exam.”
• مجھے آپ کے منصوبے کے بارے میں کچھ سوال ہیں۔
  “I have some questions about your plan.”

Examples with pronouns:

Note that with آپ, تم, وہ, etc., you normally add the possessive form (میرا, تمہارا, اس کا) then use oblique: میرے, تمہارے, اس کے.

• وہ میرے کے بارے میں کبھی بات نہیں کرتا۔
  “He never talks about me.”

کے متعلق / کے بارے – regarding, concerning

کے متعلق and کے بارے are stylistic variants, often slightly more formal or written.

• یہ رپورٹ ماحولیات کے متعلق ہے۔
  “This report is about the environment.”
• ہمیں اس مسئلے کے بارے سنجیدگی سے سوچنا ہوگا۔
  “We must think seriously about this problem.”

In speech, کے بارے میں is the safest and most frequent choice.

Cause, reason, and basis

کی وجہ سے – because of, due to

Structure:
X کی وجہ سے = “because of X,” “due to X”

X can be a noun, pronoun, or clause-like phrase.

Examples:

• بارش کی وجہ سے میچ منسوخ ہو گیا۔
  “Because of the rain, the match was cancelled.”
• آپ کی وجہ سے سب خوش ہیں۔
  “Because of you, everyone is happy.”
• ٹریفک کی وجہ سے میں دیر سے پہنچا۔
  “I arrived late because of traffic.”

With pronouns:

Note that in fast speech people often omit کے/کی after possessives and directly say “میری وجہ سے,” “آپ کی وجہ سے.” Both patterns are acceptable, but “کی وجہ سے” is the canonical full form.

Compare:

• اس کی محنت کی وجہ سے وہ پاس ہوا۔
  “Because of his hard work, he passed.” (positive reason)
• اس کی غلطی کی وجہ سے سب کو نقصان ہوا۔
  “Because of his mistake, everyone suffered a loss.” (negative cause)

کے باعث – due to, owing to (formal)

کے باعث is a more formal and written alternative to کی وجہ سے.

• بارش کے باعث سڑکیں بند ہو گئیں۔
  “Due to the rain, the roads were closed.”
• مہنگائی کے باعث لوگ پریشان ہیں۔
  “People are troubled because of inflation.”

It is common in news language and reports.

کی بنیاد پر – on the basis of

Structure:
X کی بنیاد پر = “on the basis of X,” “based on X”

Used when talking about criteria, grounds, or basis for decisions, judgments, classifications.

• ہمیں تعصب نہیں کرنا چاہیے، رنگ یا نسل کی بنیاد پر فیصلہ نہیں کرنا چاہیے۔
  “We should not be prejudiced, we should not decide on the basis of color or race.”
• داخلہ میرٹ کی بنیاد پر ہوگا۔
  “Admission will be on the basis of merit.”
• اس فلم کو صرف نام کی بنیاد پر مت جج کریں۔
  “Do not judge this film just on the basis of its name.”

Purpose, goal, and benefit

کے لیے – for, for the sake of

Although کے لیے has been used earlier, here we emphasize its abstract relational uses.

Abstract “for”:

• یہ کتاب بچوں کے لیے ہے۔
  “This book is for children.”
• میں تمہارے لیے دعا کرتا ہوں۔
  “I pray for you.”

Benefit or harm:

• یہ مشقیں آپ کی صحت کے لیے اچھی ہیں۔
  “These exercises are good for your health.”
• زیادہ چینی صحت کے لیے نقصان دہ ہے۔
  “Too much sugar is harmful for health.”

Intended purpose:

• میں آپ کے لیے چائے بنا رہا ہوں۔
  “I am making tea for you.”

کی خاطر – for the sake of

More emotional or formal than کے لیے.

Structure:
X کی خاطر = “for the sake of X,” “for X’s sake”

• میں تمہاری خوشی کی خاطر سب کچھ چھوڑ سکتا ہوں۔
  “For the sake of your happiness, I can leave everything.”
• ہمیں ملک کی خاطر ایمانداری سے کام کرنا چاہیے۔
  “For the sake of the country, we should work honestly.”
• بچوں کی خاطر وہ شہر بدلنے پر تیار ہو گیا۔
  “For the children’s sake he agreed to change the city.”

کے حق میں / کے خلاف – in favour of, against

These show a position, stance, or alignment in an abstract sense.

• میں اس تجویز کے حق میں ہوں۔
  “I am in favour of this proposal.”
• وہ نئے قانون کے خلاف بات کر رہا تھا۔
  “He was speaking against the new law.”
• زیادہ تر طلبہ ہڑتال کے حق میں تھے۔
  “Most students were in favour of the strike.”
• کچھ لوگ اس فیصلے کے خلاف ہیں۔
  “Some people are against this decision.”

Contrast, concession, and exception

کے باوجود – in spite of, despite

Structure:
X کے باوجود = “in spite of X,” “despite X”

X is usually a noun phrase or sometimes a clause-like expression.

• بارش کے باوجود وہ آئے۔
  “They came despite the rain.”
• تھکن کے باوجود اس نے کام جاری رکھا۔
  “In spite of tiredness, he continued working.”
• ہماری کوششوں کے باوجود مسئلہ حل نہیں ہوا۔
  “Despite our efforts, the problem was not solved.”

With pronouns:

• تمہاری مدد کے باوجود ہم کامیاب نہیں ہوئے۔
  “Despite your help, we were not successful.”

Compare:

• بارش کی وجہ سے میچ منسوخ ہوا۔
  “Because of the rain the match was cancelled.”
• بارش کے باوجود میچ ہوا۔
  “In spite of the rain the match took place.”

کے سوا / کے علاوہ – except, besides, apart from

Although they can be concrete, they also often express abstract exclusion or inclusion.

کے سوا mainly “except, other than.”

• میرے سوا سب نے ہاں کہہ دی۔
  “Everyone except me said yes.”
• اس شرط کے سوا مجھے سب منظور ہے۔
  “Apart from this condition, I accept everything.”

کے علاوہ “besides, in addition to, apart from.”

• تنخواہ کے علاوہ کچھ اضافی فوائد بھی ہیں۔
  “Besides salary, there are some additional benefits.”
• اردو کے علاوہ وہ فارسی بھی جانتی ہے۔
  “Besides Urdu, she also knows Persian.”

Relation, reference, and comparison

کے متعلق / کے حوالے سے – regarding, with reference to

You saw کے متعلق above. Another very common expression is کے حوالے سے, literally “with reference to X,” widely used in educated and media Urdu.

• اس موضوع کے حوالے سے بہت سی کتابیں لکھی گئی ہیں۔
  “Many books have been written regarding this topic.”
• آپ کی درخواست کے حوالے سے ہم جلد فیصلہ کریں گے۔
  “We will decide soon regarding your application.”
• اس واقعے کے حوالے سے مختلف آرا ہیں۔
  “There are different opinions regarding this incident.”

کے لحاظ سے – in terms of, with respect to

Structure:
X کے لحاظ سے = “in terms of X,” “with respect to X”

Used for evaluations and comparisons on a particular dimension.

• قیمت کے لحاظ سے یہ موبائل سستا ہے۔
  “In terms of price, this mobile is cheap.”
• موسم کے لحاظ سے یہ شہر بہتر ہے۔
  “With respect to climate, this city is better.”
• معیار کے لحاظ سے دونوں یونیورسٹیاں اچھی ہیں۔
  “In terms of quality, both universities are good.”
• زبان کے لحاظ سے یہ کتاب آسان ہے۔
  “In terms of language, this book is easy.”

کے مقابلے میں – in comparison to, compared with

Structure:
X کے مقابلے میں Y = “Y compared to X,” “in comparison to X”

• پچھلے سال کے مقابلے میں اس سال نتائج بہتر ہیں۔
  “Compared to last year, results are better this year.”
• اس کے مقابلے میں تم زیادہ تجربہ رکھتے ہو۔
  “In comparison to him, you have more experience.”
• دیہات کے مقابلے میں شہروں میں کرایہ زیادہ ہے۔
  “Compared to villages, rent is higher in cities.”

کے مطابق – according to

Structure:
X کے مطابق = “according to X,” “in accordance with X”

X can be a person, rule, law, report, etc.

• ڈاکٹر کے مطابق آپ کو آرام کی ضرورت ہے۔
  “According to the doctor, you need rest.”
• قانون کے مطابق یہ جرم ہے۔
  “According to the law, this is a crime.”
• معاہدے کے مطابق ہمیں پہلے ادائیگی کرنی ہوگی۔
  “According to the agreement, we must pay first.”
• رپورٹ کے مطابق حالات بہتر ہو رہے ہیں۔
  “According to the report, the situation is improving.”

کے زیرِ اثر – under the influence of

This is slightly more literary or formal, but useful for abstract influence.

• وہ دباؤ کے زیرِ اثر غلط فیصلے کر بیٹھا۔
  “Under pressure, he made wrong decisions.”
• مغربی ثقافت کے زیرِ اثر بہت سی تبدیلیاں آئی ہیں۔
  “Many changes have come under the influence of Western culture.”

Attitude, perspective, and relation between people

کے بارے میں سوچنا / کے بارے میں رائے – thinking about, opinion about

You already know کے بارے میں. Combine it with verbs of mental activity.

• میں مستقبل کے بارے میں سوچ رہا ہوں۔
  “I am thinking about the future.”
• اس مسئلے کے بارے میں آپ کی کیا رائے ہے؟
  “What is your opinion about this issue?”

سے متعلق – related to, connected with

Structure:
X سے متعلق = “related to X,” “connected with X”

• تعلیم سے متعلق پالیسیاں تبدیل ہو رہی ہیں۔
  “Policies related to education are changing.”
• مجھے اس پروجیکٹ سے متعلق کچھ معلومات چاہییں۔
  “I need some information related to this project.”
• اس خبر سے متعلق مزید تفصیل بعد میں دی جائے گی۔
  “Further details related to this news will be given later.”

Note the contrast:

• تعلیم کے متعلق کتابیں
  “Books about education”
• تعلیم سے متعلق مسائل
  “Problems related to education”

In everyday usage they overlap, but سے متعلق often suggests a more direct or technical connection.

کے ساتھ تعلق / سے تعلق – relation with

For social or abstract relations.

• اس کا میرے ساتھ پرانا تعلق ہے۔
  “He has an old connection with me.”
• اس کا سیاست سے تعلق نہیں ہے۔
  “He has no connection with politics.”
• اس خاندان سے میرا کوئی تعلق نہیں۔
  “I have no relation with that family.”

Condition, dependence, and limitation

پر منحصر – dependent on

Structure:
X پر منحصر = “dependent on X”

Often combined with ہونا “to be.”

• کامیابی محنت پر منحصر ہے۔
  “Success depends on hard work.”
• آپ کی ترقی آپ کے رویے پر منحصر ہوگی۔
  “Your promotion will depend on your attitude.”
• نتیجہ حالات پر منحصر ہے۔
  “The result depends on the circumstances.”

کی شرط پر – on condition that

Structure:
X کی شرط پر = “on the condition of X,” “on X condition”

• میں آپ کی مدد کروں گا، ایک بات کی شرط پر۔
  “I will help you, on one condition.”
• وہ صرف اس وعدے کی شرط پر واپس آیا۔
  “He returned only on the condition of that promise.”
• داخلہ امتحان میں کامیابی کی شرط پر ملے گا۔
  “Admission will be given on the condition of success in the exam.”

کے دائرہ کار میں / کے دائرے سے باہر – within / outside the scope

More formal and abstract, common in academic or official language.

• یہ مسئلہ ہماری کمیٹی کے دائرہ کار میں نہیں آتا۔
  “This issue does not fall within the scope of our committee.”
• اس بحث میں صرف زبان کے دائرہ کار میں آنے والے پہلو شامل ہیں۔
  “In this discussion, only aspects within the scope of language are included.”
• یہ سوال اس مضمون کے دائرے سے باہر ہے۔
  “This question is outside the scope of this subject.”

Time relations and abstract sequences

Here you focus on those that express logical or abstract timing, not just simple “before” and “after.”

کے بعد / سے پہلے – after / before (abstract events)

Used not only for clock time but also for conditions and logical stages.

• امتحان کے بعد ہم منصوبہ بنائیں گے۔
  “After the exam we will make a plan.”
• فیصلہ کرنے سے پہلے اچھی طرح سوچیں۔
  “Think carefully before making a decision.”
• میٹنگ کے بعد فائنل رپورٹ تیار ہوگی۔
  “The final report will be prepared after the meeting.”

کے دوران – during

Used for both concrete time periods and abstract processes.

• گفتگو کے دوران کوئی بھی فون استعمال نہ کرے۔
  “During the conversation, no one should use the phone.”
• جنگ کے دوران بہت سے لوگ بے گھر ہوئے۔
  “During the war, many people became homeless.”
• کلاس کے دوران سوال پوچھنا منع نہیں ہے۔
  “It is not forbidden to ask questions during class.”

کے بعد سے – since after

A more nuanced time relation.

• حادثے کے بعد سے وہ بہت محتاط ہو گیا ہے۔
  “Since the accident, he has become very cautious.”
• ملاقات کے بعد سے اس کا رویہ بدل گیا ہے۔
  “Since the meeting, his attitude has changed.”

Common patterns and combinations

Many abstract expressions come from combining two or more postpositional elements. Some patterns:

Noun + simple postposition + سے / پر / میں

• علم کے بغیر “without knowledge”
• ثبوت کے ساتھ “with proof”
• شرائط کے تحت “under conditions”
• قانون کے مطابق “according to the law”
• قاعدے کے خلاف “against the rule”

Examples:

• علم کے بغیر رائے دینا مناسب نہیں۔
  “It is not appropriate to give an opinion without knowledge.”
• ثبوت کے ساتھ بات کریں۔
  “Speak with evidence.”
• وہ سخت شرائط کے تحت کام کر رہا ہے۔
  “He is working under strict conditions.”

Multiple abstract phrases in one sentence

• قانون کے مطابق سب برابر ہیں، لیکن عملی زندگی میں حالات کچھ اور ہیں۔
  “According to the law everyone is equal, but in practical life the conditions are somewhat different.”
• بارش کے باوجود اور سردی کے باوجود بھی لوگ جلسے میں شامل ہوئے۔
  “Despite the rain and despite the cold, people still joined the gathering.”
• قیمت کے لحاظ سے یہ چیز مہنگی نہیں، لیکن معیار کے لحاظ سے بہت اعلیٰ ہے۔
  “In terms of price this item is not expensive, but in terms of quality it is excellent.”
