4.5 Complex Postpositions

Overview

At earlier levels you met common Urdu postpositions such as میں (in), پر (on, at), سے (from, by) and کے ساتھ (with). In this chapter we focus on complex postpositions, which are usually combinations of a noun or adverb plus a basic postposition. These combinations express more abstract relations such as “about,” “because of,” “in front of,” “despite,” and many more.

You will see how these complex postpositions behave grammatically, how they combine with noun phrases, and how they let you talk about subtle relationships of cause, contrast, dependence, location, and time.

Structure of Complex Postpositions

Many complex postpositions share a similar structure. Start from a basic pattern, then notice common variations.

Core structural patterns

Pattern 1: Noun in oblique + simple postposition

Here the combination acts together as a postposition.

This pattern is familiar, but in complex postpositions, the noun part can be very abstract, for example, بعد (after), وجہ (reason), لحاظ (regard), مطابق (according), خلاف (against).

Pattern 2: Noun (oblique) + کا / کی / کے + head word + simple postposition

Here the postposition is actually the entire phrase, but the final element behaves like a postposition.

The possessive marker کا / کی / کے agrees with the preceding noun, not the following word.

Spatial Complex Postpositions

Now we look at spatial relations that are more precise than simple میں and پر.

Front, back, top, bottom

These are built from a body-part or location noun.

Notes and examples

1. کے سامنے (in front of)
• دفتر کے سامنے بس اسٹاپ ہے۔
  “There is a bus stop in front of the office.”
• وہ میرے سامنے بیٹھا ہے۔
  “He is sitting in front of me.”
2. کے پیچھے (behind)
• گاڑی کے پیچھے موٹر سائیکل کھڑی ہے۔
  “A motorcycle is parked behind the car.”
• وہ میرے پیچھے آیا۔
  “He came behind me.”
3. کے اردگرد (around)
• مسجد کے اردگرد بہت دکانیں ہیں۔
  “There are many shops around the mosque.”
• درخت کے اردگرد بچے کھیل رہے ہیں۔
  “Children are playing around the tree.”

Inside, outside, among

• گھر کے اندر کوئی نہیں۔
  “There is no one inside the house.”
• کمرے کے باہر شور ہے۔
  “There is noise outside the room.”
• دوستوں کے درمیان وہ بہت مشہور ہے۔
  “He is very popular among friends.”
• دریا کے بیچ چھوٹا سا جزیرہ ہے۔
  “There is a small island in the middle of the river.”

Temporal Complex Postpositions

Complex postpositions also position events in time more exactly.

Before and after

You already know سے پہلے and کے بعد, but here we use more abstract nouns.

• کھانے سے پہلے ہاتھ دھوئیں۔
  “Wash your hands before eating.”
• جنگ کے بعد حالات بدلے۔
  “The situation changed after the war.”
• گفتگو کے دوران وہ خاموش رہا۔
  “He remained silent during the conversation.”

Within, since, from… till

Some are semi-complex, built on basic postpositions but used in abstract ways.

“Within” can also be expressed with simple phrases, but کے اندر is very common for a timeframe or limit.

Causal and Motivational Complex Postpositions

Now we move to abstract relations of cause, reason, and purpose. These are central to more advanced narration and argument.

“Because of” and “due to”

کی وجہ سے

This is one of the most frequent complex postpositions.

Structure:
[cause in oblique] + کی وجہ سے

• وہ بیمار تھا، اس لیے وہ میٹنگ میں نہیں آیا۔
  “He was sick, therefore he did not come to the meeting.”
  Here “اس لیے” shows reason. To be more explicit:
• بیماری کی وجہ سے وہ میٹنگ میں نہیں آیا۔
  “Because of illness he did not come to the meeting.”
• بارش کی وجہ سے میچ منسوخ ہو گیا۔
  “The match was cancelled because of the rain.”
• ٹریفک کی وجہ سے مجھے دیر ہو گئی۔
  “Because of traffic I got late.”

Observe agreement:

• بارش (f.) → بارش کی وجہ سے
• ٹریفک (usually treated as f.) → ٹریفک کی وجہ سے

کے باعث

More formal, often in news or formal writing.

• حادثے کے باعث سڑک بند کر دی گئی۔
  “The road was closed due to the accident.”
• مالی مسائل کے باعث منصوبہ ملتوی ہو گیا۔
  “The project was postponed due to financial problems.”

کے سبب

Very similar to کے باعث, slightly literary.

• بارش کے سبب سیلاب آ گیا۔
  “Flood occurred due to the rain.”
• اس کے سخت رویّے کے سبب سب ناراض ہیں۔
  “Everyone is angry because of his harsh behavior.”

“For the sake of” and “because of (someone)”

کی خاطر

Structure:
[person / purpose in oblique] + کی خاطر

Meaning: for the sake of, for the benefit of, on account of.

• بچوں کی خاطر اس نے سب برداشت کیا۔
  “For the sake of the children he endured everything.”
• امن کی خاطر ہمیں بات چیت کرنی چاہیے۔
  “For the sake of peace we should talk.”

کی وجہ سے vs کی خاطر

• اس نے پیسے کی وجہ سے شادی کی۔
  “He married because of money.” (reason)
• اس نے ماں کی خاطر شادی کی۔
  “He married for his mother’s sake.” (for her, to please her)

Concessive and Contrasting Complex Postpositions

These express contrast, concession, or opposition such as “despite,” “against,” “in comparison with.”

“Despite,” “in spite of”

کے باوجود

Structure:
[X in oblique] + کے باوجود

Meaning: despite X, in spite of X.

• بارش کے باوجود وہ آیا۔
  “He came despite the rain.”
• تھکن کے باوجود وہ کام کرتا رہا۔
  “Despite the fatigue he kept working.”
• کم تنخواہ کے باوجود وہ خوش ہے۔
  “Despite the low salary he is happy.”

You can also start the sentence with this phrase:

• بارش کے باوجود, میچ ہوا۔
  “Despite the rain the match took place.”

“Against” or “contrary to”

کے خلاف

Structure:
[X in oblique] + کے خلاف

Meaning: against, opposed to.

• قانون کے خلاف کوئی کام نہ کریں۔
  “Do not do anything against the law.”
• وہ ہمارے مشورے کے خلاف گیا۔
  “He went against our advice.”
• یہ فیصلے عوامی رائے کے خلاف ہیں۔
  “These decisions are against public opinion.”

کے برعکس

More like “contrary to” or “in contrast with.”

• میری توقعات کے برعکس فلم بہت اچھی نکلی۔
  “Contrary to my expectations the film turned out very good.”
• اس کے دعووں کے برعکس حقیقت کچھ اور ہے۔
  “Contrary to his claims the reality is something else.”

Comparative and Reference Postpositions

These express comparison and reference, such as “according to,” “about,” “regarding,” “compared to.”

“According to”

کے مطابق

Structure:
[source / standard in oblique] + کے مطابق

Meaning: according to, in conformity with.

• قانون کے مطابق آپ غلط ہیں۔
  “According to the law you are wrong.”
• منصوبے کے مطابق ہمیں کل روانہ ہونا ہے۔
  “According to the plan we have to depart tomorrow.”
• آپ کی ہدایات کے مطابق کام مکمل ہوا۔
  “The work was completed according to your instructions.”

کے حساب سے

Casual, used for “according to,” “in terms of,” or “by calculation.”

• عمر کے حساب سے وہ ابھی چھوٹا ہے۔
  “According to his age he is still young.”
• بجٹ کے حساب سے یہ ہوٹل مہنگا نہیں۔
  “Considering the budget this hotel is not expensive.”
• پاکستانی روپے کے حساب سے قیمت کیا ہوگی؟
  “What will the price be in Pakistani rupees?”

“About,” “regarding,” “with respect to”

کے بارے میں

Structure:
[topic in oblique] + کے بارے میں

Meaning: about, regarding.

• پاکستان کے بارے میں آپ کیا جانتے ہیں؟
  “What do you know about Pakistan?”
• اس مسئلے کے بارے میں میں کچھ نہیں کہہ سکتا۔
  “I cannot say anything about this issue.”
• اس کتاب کے بارے میں لوگ بہت تعریف کرتے ہیں۔
  “People praise this book a lot.”

کے متعلق / کے حوالے سے

More formal. Used especially in media, official talk.

• حادثے کے متعلق ابھی زیادہ معلومات نہیں۔
  “There is not much information yet regarding the accident.”
• تعلیم کے حوالے سے حکومت نے نئی پالیسیاں بنائیں۔
  “The government has made new policies with regard to education.”

“In comparison with”

کے مقابلے میں

Structure:
[X in oblique] + کے مقابلے میں

Meaning: compared to, in comparison with.

• پچھلے سال کے مقابلے میں اس سال نتائج بہتر ہیں۔
  “This year’s results are better compared to last year.”
• اس شہر کے مقابلے میں ہمارا شہر بہت چھوٹا ہے۔
  “Compared to this city our city is very small.”
• انٹرنیٹ کے مقابلے میں کتابیں سستی ہیں۔
  “Books are cheaper compared to the internet.” (for information cost)

کے نسبت

Similar idea, often in slightly more formal or literary style.

• بھائی کے نسبت بہن زیادہ سنجیدہ ہے۔
  “The sister is more serious compared to the brother.”
• دیہات کے نسبت شہروں میں مہنگائی زیادہ ہے۔
  “Compared to villages, inflation is higher in cities.”

Relational and Abstract Complex Postpositions

These express more abstract relationships, such as “in terms of,” “in view of,” “with regard to,” “depending on.”

“With regard to,” “in terms of”

کے لحاظ سے

Structure:
[criterion in oblique] + کے لحاظ سے

Meaning: in terms of, with regard to, from the point of view of.

• موسم کے لحاظ سے یہ شہر بہت اچھا ہے۔
  “In terms of climate this city is very good.”
• معیار کے لحاظ سے یہ کمپنی بہتر ہے۔
  “In terms of quality this company is better.”
• زبان کے لحاظ سے اردو اور ہندی بہت قریب ہیں۔
  “In terms of language Urdu and Hindi are very close.”

کے اعتبار سے

Very similar, a little more formal.

• تجربے کے اعتبار سے وہ مضبوط امیدوار ہے۔
  “In terms of experience he is a strong candidate.”
• ثقافت کے اعتبار سے دونوں ممالک میں فرق ہے۔
  “There is a difference between the two countries in terms of culture.”

“In light of,” “in view of”

کے پیش نظر

Structure:
[consideration in oblique] + کے پیش نظر

Meaning: in view of, in light of, considering.

• موجودہ حالات کے پیش نظر اجلاس ملتوی کر دیا گیا۔
  “In view of the current situation the meeting has been postponed.”
• طلبہ کی مشکلات کے پیش نظر نئے قوانین بنائے گئے۔
  “New rules were made in view of students’ difficulties.”

This is common in news reports and formal announcements.

“Depending on,” “based on”

پر منحصر

Structure:
[X in oblique] + پر منحصر ہے / ہیں

Meaning: depends on X.

• سب کچھ آپ کے فیصلے پر منحصر ہے۔
  “Everything depends on your decision.”
• کامیابی محنت پر منحصر ہے۔
  “Success depends on hard work.”
• قیمت بازار کے حالات پر منحصر ہے۔
  “The price depends on market conditions.”

Although grammatically “پر منحصر” is verb-like, in function it acts much like a complex postposition.

Benefactive, Possessive, and Other Relations

Some complex postpositions express benefit, possession type relations, or limited perspective.

“For,” “on behalf of,” “for the benefit of”

کے لیے

You already know کے لیے as a basic postposition. It also appears inside more complex phrases.

• کمپنی کے لیے کام کرنا مشکل ہو گیا۔
  “Working for the company became difficult.”
• آپ کے لیے میں نے سب کیا۔
  “I did everything for you.”

In combination:

• سب کی بھلائی کے لیے یہ فیصلہ کیا گیا۔
  “This decision was made for the good of everyone.”
• بچوں کے مستقبل کے لیے ہمیں سوچنا ہوگا۔
  “We must think for the children’s future.”

“In possession of,” “with” (in a special sense)

کے پاس

Structure:
[possessor in oblique] + کے پاس

Meaning: to have, to be in possession of.

• میرے کے پاس گاڑی نہیں ہے۔
  “I do not have a car.”
• ان کے پاس بہت تجربہ ہے۔
  “They have a lot of experience.”

Though basic, کے پاس is often extended:

• اس وقت میرے پاس وقت کی کمی ہے۔
  “Right now I am short of time.” (lit. I have a shortage of time)
• ان کے پاس وسائل کی کمی ہے۔
  “They have a shortage of resources.”

“Vis‑à‑vis,” “with respect to” (formal)

کے سلسلے میں

Structure:
[topic in oblique] + کے سلسلے میں

Meaning: regarding, concerning, with respect to, often formal.

• آپ کی شکایت کے سلسلے میں ہم نے تحقیق کی ہے۔
  “We have investigated with respect to your complaint.”
• اس منصوبے کے سلسلے میں ایک رپورٹ تیار کی گئی۔
  “A report has been prepared regarding this project.”

کے ضمن میں

Also formal, often in academic or official writing.

• اس تحقیق کے ضمن میں کچھ سوالات پیدا ہوتے ہیں۔
  “Some questions arise in connection with this research.”
• موجودہ بحث کے ضمن میں یہ مثال اہم ہے۔
  “This example is important in the context of the present discussion.”

Nuances, Style, and Substitution

At this level you should notice how speakers choose between several complex postpositions that are close in meaning. Choice often signals formality, perspective, or evaluation.

Formal vs informal options

You should be able to recognize the formal ones in texts, even if you usually produce the neutral ones in speech.

Example set

• بارش کی وجہ سے / بارش کے باعث ٹرین لیٹ ہو گئی۔
  “The train was delayed because of the rain.”
  Both are fine; the second is more formal.
• اس فیصلے کے بارے میں / کے حوالے سے آپ کی کیا رائے ہے؟
  “What is your opinion about / regarding this decision?”
  The second sounds like news or official context.

Subtle differences of viewpoint

Small changes in postposition can change the angle:

• پاکستان کے بارے میں بات کریں۔
  “Talk about Pakistan.” (topic)
• پاکستان کے لحاظ سے موسم کیسا ہے؟
  “How is the climate in terms of Pakistan?” (criterion)
• پاکستان کے مقابلے میں بھارت میں شرحِ خواندگی کیسی ہے؟
  “Compared to Pakistan, how is the literacy rate in India?” (comparison)
