Using Advanced Spatial Expressions in Urdu

In this chapter you will work with more complex ways to express space, position, and direction in Urdu, mainly through compound and complex postpositions. You already know basic postpositions like میں, پر, سے, تک. Here, we expand to less literal, more nuanced, and more formal spatial expressions that appear in conversation, news, and literature.

1. Fine Distinctions of Position

1.1 “On top of,” “underneath,” “in the middle of”

You already know:

• پر “on, at”
• میں “in, inside”
• کے نیچے “under, below”

Now look at more precise spatial relations.

Examples

1. عمارت کے اوپر اینٹینا لگا ہوا ہے۔
   On top of the building there is an antenna.
2. بستر کے نیچے جوتے رکھ دو۔
   Put the shoes under the bed.
3. دو عمارتوں کے بیچ میں ایک چھوٹا سا پارک ہے۔
   Between the two buildings there is a small park.
4. دریا کے کنارے ایک گاؤں ہے۔
   There is a village on the river bank.
5. اسکول کے پاس ایک لائبریری ہے۔
   Near the school there is a library.

2. Vertical Space and Relative Height

2.1 “Above,” “over,” “below,” “beneath”

Urdu distinguishes between literal “on top” and more abstract “above / over.”

Examples

1. پل کے اوپر سے گاڑیاں جا رہی ہیں۔
   Cars are going over the bridge.
2. دروازے کے نیچے سے بلی اندر آ گئی۔
   The cat came in from under the door.
3. پہاڑ کے اوپر برف پڑی ہوئی ہے۔
   There is snow on the mountain top.

2.2 Hanging, covering, leaning

3. Horizontal Relations and Relative Position

3.1 “Along,” “across,” “through”

These expressions are very common in narrative and description.

Examples

1. دریا کے ساتھ ساتھ ایک سڑک جاتی ہے۔
   A road goes along the river.
2. ہم پل کے پار گاؤں میں گئے۔
   We went to the village across the bridge.
3. وہ بھیڑ کے درمیان سے راستہ بنا کر آگے بڑھا۔
   He made his way forward through the crowd.
4. ٹرین پہاڑ کے اندر سے سرنگ کے ذریعے گزرتی ہے۔
   The train passes through the mountain via a tunnel.

3.2 “Around,” “surrounding”

Examples

1. باغ کے گرد اونچی دیوار ہے۔
   There is a high wall around the garden.
2. اسٹیشن کے آس پاس ہوٹل مل جائیں گے۔
   You will find hotels around the station.
3. جھیل کے چاروں طرف درخت ہیں۔
   There are trees all around the lake.

4.1 Inside vs within

Basic “in” is میں, but complex spatial expressions refine the idea of boundaries.

Examples

1. ڈبّے کے اندر کتابیں ہیں۔
   There are books inside the box.
2. وہ کمرے کے اندر ہی بیٹھا رہا۔
   He stayed seated right inside the room.
3. شہر کے دائرے میں کئی چھوٹے قصبے آتے ہیں۔
   Several small towns fall within the area of the city.

4.2 Borders and limits

Examples

1. یہ علاقہ شہر کی حدوں میں نہیں آتا۔
   This area does not fall within the city limits.
2. ہم دریا کے کنارے پر بیٹھے تھے۔
   We were sitting on the river bank.
3. دو ملکوں کی سرحد پر سخت سکیورٹی ہوتی ہے۔
   There is strict security on the border of the two countries.

5. Directions, Orientation, and Reference Points

5.1 Facing, opposite, behind

These are crucial in giving directions.

Examples

1. مسجد کے سامنے بینک ہے۔
   There is a bank in front of the mosque.
2. بس اسٹاپ کے عین سامنے مارکیٹ ہے۔
   Right opposite the bus stop there is a market.
3. اسکول کے پیچھے پارک ہے۔
   Behind the school there is a park.
4. سڑک کے دائیں طرف ہسپتال ہے اور بائیں طرف دکانیں ہیں۔
   On the right side of the road there is a hospital, and on the left side there are shops.

5.2 Relative to a landmark

These expressions locate something relative to a known point.

Examples

1. ریلوے اسٹیشن کے بالکل قریب ہوٹل ہے۔
   There is a hotel right near the railway station.
2. چوک سے کچھ آگے بائیں مڑ جائیں۔
   Turn left a bit ahead of the square.
3. بینک کے بعد پہلا موڑ دائیں طرف ہے۔
   The first turn after the bank is to the right.

6. Movement Paths and Trajectories

6.1 “From, to, via” with spatial nuance

You know basic سے and تک. Combine them with other words for more complex routes.

Examples

1. میں گھر سے دفتر تک پیدل جاتا ہوں۔
   I go on foot from home to the office.
2. ہم لاہور سے ہوتے ہوئے مری تک گئے۔
   We went to Murree via Lahore.
3. آپ موٹروے کے راستے اسلام آباد جا سکتے ہیں۔
   You can go to Islamabad via the motorway.
4. گاڑی پل کے اوپر سے گزر رہی ہے۔
   The car is passing over the bridge.

6.2 Entering, exiting, and passing through

Examples

1. وہ کلاس میں داخل ہوا۔
   He entered the class.
2. وہ دکان سے باہر نکل آئی۔
   She came out of the shop.
3. ہوائی جہاز بادلوں کے اندر سے گزر رہا ہے۔
   The airplane is passing through the clouds.

7. Complex “Near / Far” Relations

7.1 Subtle distances

Urdu has several layered ways to say “near” and “far” with different tones.

Examples

1. اسٹیشن کے قریب ایک بڑی مارکیٹ ہے۔
   There is a big market near the station.
2. ہمارا گاؤں شہر سے بہت دور ہے۔
   Our village is very far from the city.
3. ہم شہر کے نواح میں رہتے ہیں۔
   We live in the outskirts of the city.
4. اسکول کے آس پاس کوئی پارک نہیں ہے۔
   There is no park around the school.

8. Spatial Metaphors Toward Abstraction

Some spatial expressions keep a concrete meaning but are very often used metaphorically. Here we still focus mainly on the spatial reading but you will notice the bridge to more abstract uses.

8.1 “In the middle of,” “at the heart of”

Spatial examples

1. میدان کے بیچ میں فوارہ لگا ہوا ہے۔
   In the middle of the ground there is a fountain.
2. تین سڑکوں کے درمیان یہ چوک بنا ہوا ہے۔
   This square has been built between three roads.
3. جھیل کے عین وسط میں ایک چھوٹا سا جزیرہ ہے۔
   Right in the center of the lake there is a small island.

8.2 “Under,” “over,” “within” and control

These will later become more abstract, but here is still spatial:

1. درخت کے سایہ میں بیٹھنا اچھا لگتا ہے۔
   It feels good to sit in the shade of the tree.
2. یہ جزیرہ ایک اور ملک کی حدود کے اندر آتا ہے۔
   This island lies within the territory of another country.

9. Patterns of Agreement with Complex Postpositions

9.1 Pronouns with complex postpositions

Remember that the noun or pronoun used with a complex postposition is in oblique form. The postposition words like اوپر, اندر, پیچھے, درمیان behave like postpositions, not separate nouns.

Examples

1. میرے سامنے گاڑی اچانک رک گئی۔
   The car suddenly stopped in front of me.
2. تمہارے پیچھے کون کھڑا ہے؟
   Who is standing behind you?
3. ہمارے آس پاس کوئی دکان نہیں ہے۔
   There is no shop around us.

Dialogue 1: Asking for directions

• شخص الف: معاف کیجئے، یہاں سے ریلوے اسٹیشن کیسے جانا ہے؟
  Excuse me, how do I go to the railway station from here?
• شخص ب: آپ سیدھے جائیں، مارکیٹ کے بعد جو دوسرا چوک آئے گا، اس کے عین سامنے اسٹیشن ہے۔
  Go straight. After the market, the second square that comes, the station is directly opposite it.
• شخص الف: کیا وہ بس اسٹاپ کے پاس ہی ہے؟
  Is it right near the bus stop?
• شخص ب: جی، بس اسٹاپ اسٹیشن کے بالکل قریب ہے۔

• شخص الف: آپ کا گھر شہر کے کس حصّے میں ہے؟
  In which part of the city is your house?
• شخص ب: ہم دریا کے کنارے کے پاس رہتے ہیں، شہر کے نواح میں۔
  We live near the river bank, in the outskirts of the city.
• شخص الف: کیا آپ کے گھر کے آس پاس اور بھی گھر ہیں؟
  Are there more houses around your house?
• شخص ب: جی، ہمارے گھر کے چاروں طرف کھیت ہیں اور تھوڑا آگے ایک چھوٹا گاؤں ہے۔
  Yes, there are fields all around our house, and a bit further there is a small village.
