Talking About Likes and Dislikes in Urdu

In this chapter you learn how to say what you like and do not like, especially about food and eating, but also in general. You will see both very simple, everyday patterns and slightly more polite ways that native speakers use all the time.

Core Sentence Pattern with پسند ہونا

Urdu usually talks about liking with the verb پسند ہونا “to be liked,” not “to like” as in English.

The basic English idea
“I like X”

becomes in Urdu
“X is liked by me.”

The simplest pattern is:

مجھے X پسند ہے
mujhe X pasand hai
“I like X.”

Here مجھے means “to me,” X is the thing you like, and پسند ہے is “is liked.”

Basic examples with food

Notice the change between ہے hai and ہیں hain.

So:

• One tea:
• مجھے چائے پسند ہے.
• mujhe chāe pasand hai.
• Many mangoes:
• مجھے آم پسند ہیں.
• mujhe aam pasand hain.

Saying “I Don’t Like …”

To say you do not like something, simply add نہیں nahī̃ before پسند.

Pattern:

مجھے X پسند نہیں ہے۔
mujhe X pasand nahī̃ hai.
“I do not like X.”

For plurals, use نہیں ہیں.

You can soften the negative with اتنا “so much”:

• مجھے چائے اتنی پسند نہیں ہے۔
  mujhe chāe itnī pasand nahī̃ hai.
  “I don’t like tea that much.”

Talking About Other People’s Likes

To talk about someone else, change the “to me” part. This small piece is very useful:

The rest of the sentence stays almost the same.

Examples

Negatives:

• اسے چائے پسند نہیں ہے۔
  use chāe pasand nahī̃ hai.
  “He / she does not like tea.”
• ہمیں کڑوی چیزیں پسند نہیں ہیں۔
  hamẽ kaṛvī chīzẽ pasand nahī̃ hain.
  “We do not like bitter things.”

Asking “Do You Like … ?”

You can make questions with the same پسند ہونا pattern. Change the word order slightly and raise your intonation when speaking.

Very common pattern:

کیا آپ کو X پسند ہے؟
kyā āp ko X pasand hai?
“Do you like X?”

For plural:

کیا آپ کو X پسند ہیں؟
kyā āp ko X pasand hain?

Polite questions about food

Informal:

• کیا تمہیں چائے پسند ہے؟
  kyā tumhẽ chāe pasand hai?
  “Do you like tea?”

You can also ask very simply:

• آپ کو چائے پسند ہے؟
  āp ko chāe pasand hai?
  “You like tea?” (spoken, sounds like a question with intonation)

Answering: Yes, I Like It / No, I Don’t

Use ہاں hā̃ for “yes” and نہیں nahī̃ for “no,” then repeat part of the sentence.

Positive answers

Examples in full Urdu:

• ہاں، مجھے چائے پسند ہے۔
  hā̃, mujhe chāe pasand hai.
  “Yes, I like tea.”
• ہاں، مجھے بہت مسالے دار کھانا پسند ہے۔
  hā̃, mujhe bohat masāle dār khānā pasand hai.
  “Yes, I really like spicy food.”

Negative answers

Full Urdu examples:

• نہیں، مجھے چائے پسند نہیں ہے۔
  nahī̃, mujhe chāe pasand nahī̃ hai.
  “No, I do not like tea.”
• نہیں، مجھے اتنا مسالہ پسند نہیں ہے۔
  nahī̃, mujhe itnā masāla pasand nahī̃ hai.
  “No, I do not like so much spice.”

Saying “I Love …” for Food

For food, many speakers still use پسند but add words like بہت or بہت زیادہ to show strong liking.

Useful intensifiers:

Examples:

• مجھے آم بہت پسند ہیں۔
  mujhe aam bohat pasand hain.
  “I like mangoes a lot.”
• مجھے بریانی بہت زیادہ پسند ہے۔
  mujhe biryānī bohat ziyāda pasand hai.
  “I really love biryani.”
• مجھے میٹھا سب سے زیادہ پسند ہے۔
  mujhe mīṭhā sab se ziyāda pasand hai.
  “I like sweets the most.”

You can also use مجھے X بہت اچھا لگتا ہے for a similar meaning in spoken Urdu:

• مجھے آئس کریم بہت اچھی لگتی ہے۔
  mujhe āis krīm bohat achchhī lagti hai.
  “I really like ice cream.”

Degrees of Liking and Disliking

Native speakers often do not use only like or do not like. They use soft expressions to show “a little,” “not really,” etc.

Soft positives

Examples:

• مجھے کافی ٹھیک لگتی ہے۔
  mujhe kāfī ṭhīk lagti hai.
  “Coffee is okay for me.”
• مجھے سوپ تھوڑا پسند ہے۔
  mujhe sūp thoṛā pasand hai.
  “I like soup a little.”
• مجھے یہ ڈش برا نہیں لگتا۔
  mujhe ye ḍish burā nahī̃ lagtā.
  “This dish is not bad for me.”

Strong dislikes

Examples:

• مجھے میٹھا بالکل پسند نہیں ہے۔
  mujhe mīṭhā bilkul pasand nahī̃ hai.
  “I do not like sweets at all.”
• مجھے تیل والا کھانا ذرّہ بھی پسند نہیں ہے۔
  mujhe tel vālā khānā zara bhī pasand nahī̃ hai.
  “I do not like oily food even a little.”

Using Adjectives with پسند

You can describe the food that you like or dislike by putting adjectives before the noun.

Some useful adjectives for food:

• مجھے میٹھا زیادہ پسند نہیں ہے۔

  “I like fresh juice.”
• مجھے تیل والا کھانا پسند نہیں ہے۔

  merā pasandīda mīṭhā khīr hai.

A: کیا آپ کو چائے پسند ہے؟

B: ہاں، مجھے چائے پسند ہے، لیکن بہت گرم نہیں۔
hā̃, mujhe chāe pasand hai, lekin bohat garm nahī̃.

Waiter: آپ کو کون سا کھانا پسند ہے؟
āp ko kaun sā khānā pasand hai?
“What kind of food do you like?”

Customer: مجھے مسالے دار کھانا پسند ہے، لیکن تیل والا کھانا پسند نہیں ہے۔
mujhe masāle dār khānā pasand hai, lekin tel vālā khānā pasand nahī̃ hai.
“I like spicy food, but I do not like oily food.”

Waiter: آپ کو چکن پسند ہے یا مٹن؟
āp ko chicken pasand hai yā maṭan?
“Do you like chicken or mutton?”

Customer: مجھے چکن زیادہ پسند ہے۔
mujhe chicken ziyāda pasand hai.
“I like chicken more.”

Dialogue 3: Asking about someone else

A: اسے کیا پسند ہے؟
use kyā pasand hai?
“What does he / she like?”

B: اسے آئس کریم پسند ہے، لیکن اسے کافی پسند نہیں ہے۔
use āis krīm pasand hai, lekin use kāfī pasand nahī̃ hai.
“He / she likes ice cream, but does not like coffee.”

A: آپ کے بچوں کو سبزی پسند ہے؟
āp ke bachchõ ko sabzī pasand hai?
“Do your children like vegetables?”

B: نہیں، انہیں سبزی بالکل پسند نہیں ہے۔
nahĩ, unhẽ sabzī bilkul pasand nahī̃ hai.
“No, they do not like vegetables at all.”
