How Research Works
Research in Dandy’s World is the system that slowly turns your encounters with Twisteds into permanent knowledge and long term power. Every time you interact with a Twisted in the correct way, you earn progress toward a “research level” for that specific Twisted. When you reach certain progress thresholds, you unlock information and rewards tied to that enemy.
Research is always linked to a specific Twisted, never to a floor or a run. If you focus on seeing the same Twisted over and over, its research bar will fill faster. If your runs are very varied, you will spread research progress across many Twisteds at once.
Research only advances if you survive long enough for the game to register the encounter. Dying instantly at the beginning of a floor will usually give little or no research gain. Surviving, escaping chases, and reaching the elevator are the most reliable ways to secure the progress from that run.
You cannot directly “spend” research. Instead, research acts like a passive experience system that quietly fills up in the background. When you check the research screen, you see each Twisted’s level, how close it is to the next level, and which rewards you have claimed so far.
Research is per Twisted, progressive, and permanent. Once you unlock a research reward for a Twisted, it stays unlocked for all future runs.
Research Capsules
Research capsules are the items that store the data you gather on Twisteds. Depending on how the game presents them, they may appear as tokens, capsules, or logs for each Twisted entry in the research menu. You do not manually carry them in your run inventory. Instead, they function as a behind the scenes counter for each Twisted.
Each time you fulfill a condition, such as surviving a chase or escaping a floor where a given Twisted was active, you generate research capsules for that enemy. These capsules are then automatically applied to its research level. You do not need to visit any station or NPC to “bank” them. Ending the run properly, such as reaching the elevator or completing the floor, is usually enough to secure them.
Different actions can award different amounts of capsules. For instance, seeing a Twisted might award a small amount, being chased for a while might award more, and completing a floor where that Twisted was highly active might yield a larger batch. Efficient farming focuses on the actions that give the best capsule payout per unit of time.
Most of the time, research capsules are not universal. A capsule earned from an encounter with one Twisted only applies to that same Twisted. If there is any form of general research currency, it usually only supplements or boosts progress instead of replacing per Twisted research.
You cannot reassign or transfer research capsules from one Twisted to another. Any progress you earn on a specific Twisted is locked to that enemy.
Research Progress
Research progress is displayed as a bar or level system for each Twisted. You can think of it like experience points that move you through multiple research ranks. A simple model is:
$$
\text{Total Progress} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} r_i
$$
where $r_i$ is the research gained from the $i$th qualifying encounter. Each Twisted has its own separate sum, and thresholds define when it levels up.
The crucial points about research progress are consistency, survival, and repetition. Seeing a Twisted only once will barely move its bar. Facing it across many runs is what pushes it through the higher ranks. Earlier levels require fewer capsules, while later levels require more.
As you climb from low to high research levels, the kind of information unlocked can change. Early levels may simply reveal the Twisted’s name and basic behavior. Later levels may provide numbers, patterns, and potentially small mechanical advantages.
You should expect diminishing returns in terms of how fast later levels fill. The time cost of going from research level 4 to 5 is usually higher than from level 1 to 2. This is why knowing when to stop focusing on a single Twisted and move on to a different one is important for your overall account progression.
Higher research levels always take more progress than early levels, so plan which Twisteds you want to fully research and which you just want at basic info levels.
Unlocking Twisted Research
At the start, you will only see research entries for Twisteds you have actually encountered. If a Twisted has never spawned in your runs, its research entry may be hidden or marked as “unknown.” The basic rule is that first contact unlocks its profile, and later encounters fill it up.
There is usually a minimum requirement for research to begin. For example, simply hearing audio cues may not be enough, but clearly seeing the Twisted, or being chased, or surviving a floor where it appears, will unlock the initial entry. Once that first requirement is satisfied, the game starts storing any additional capsules you gain from it.
Some rare, event, or late floor Twisteds might require special conditions before their research can start. These can include reaching a certain floor range, playing during an event period, or having unlocked other content. Even for those, the pattern stays the same: meet it once under the right condition, and you gain the ability to progress its research from then on.
Importantly, you do not lose access to research on a Twisted when a temporary event ends. If an event Twisted disappears from current runs, its research page and any already unlocked rewards usually remain on your account. You just cannot earn further capsules for it until it returns or until the event is rerun.
To unlock research on a Twisted, you must encounter it under the correct conditions at least once. Before that, all potential progress is wasted because no entry exists for the game to store it in.
Research Rewards
Research rewards are what make the system valuable. They usually fall into a few categories: knowledge, small gameplay benefits, and account wide unlocks.
Knowledge rewards give you clear, reliable information on a Twisted. Early levels might display its health, speed range, hearing radius, or how it reacts to noise and line of sight. Higher levels can explain exact detection rules, chase phases, or special behavior on specific floors. This information is incredibly useful when planning strategies and builds, especially in high floors.
Gameplay rewards tend to be subtle but can influence how comfortable you feel around particular enemies. These can include hints that effectively increase your survival chance by telling you when to run, when to hide, or which angles are safer. Some games also attach global account bonuses or minor stat boosts once you complete full research on certain Twisteds, though the exact form of this varies.
Account wide unlocks can include cosmetics, profile icons, titles, or even new challenges or quests related to that Twisted. Event Twisteds may also grant limited time rewards upon hitting certain research levels while the event is active. Because those cosmetics are permanent, making progress during these windows can be especially rewarding.
To think about reward value per effort, imagine a simple ratio:
$$
\text{Reward Efficiency} = \frac{\text{Value of Reward}}{\text{Time Spent on Research}}
$$
High efficiency research targets are those that unlock important knowledge or bonuses in a short amount of grinding time. Knowing which Twisteds offer strong early rewards helps you prioritize them.
Focus first on Twisteds whose early research levels unlock critical information or permanent bonuses. Do not grind late levels on a low value Twisted while you still know nothing about more dangerous ones.
Efficient Research Farming
Efficient research farming is about maximizing capsules per minute without overexposing yourself to risk. The basic idea is to choose floor ranges and routes where target Twisteds spawn often, then repeat short, controlled runs that end safely.
First, identify which Twisted you want to farm. Then, learn which floors and map types most frequently spawn it. You do not need to reach very high floors for research. Mid or even low floors with predictable layouts are usually enough. The ideal run is short and repeatable, with consistent exposure to the Twisted and a high chance of survival.
Once you are comfortable with a setup, plan your route. Move in a way that increases your chance of hearing or seeing the Twisted. When it appears, interact enough to trigger chase or detection conditions that grant capsules, but do not play recklessly. Surviving and reaching the elevator is what locks in your progress.
Team composition also matters. If you are playing with others, they can help manage machines while you deliberately interact with the Twisted more often, or they can act as distractors so you can observe from safer angles. In solo play, you must balance your research goals against extraction and survival, so be careful not to prolong chases unnecessarily.
Finally, be aware of diminishing returns on a single Twisted. Once you reach a research level where the next reward requires a significant time investment, it can be smarter to rotate to a different Twisted to raise several entries to mid level rather than push one all the way to max immediately.
Efficient farming prioritizes short, repeatable runs, safe survival, and high spawn consistency for your target Twisted. Long, chaotic runs with random spawns are usually inefficient for research.
Research Tips
To use research well as a beginner, start by letting it fill naturally. Do not force dangerous encounters early on just to gain capsules. Surviving and learning basic gameplay is more important than squeezing out a small research gain during your first hours.
Once you are more comfortable, check your research menu regularly. Notice which Twisteds already have partial progress simply from normal play. Focus your learning on those first, since you are already meeting them often. Reading their behavior notes right after a run makes your experiences more understandable and sticks better in your memory.
Pay attention to how research information changes your decisions in runs. If a research entry mentions that a certain Twisted is weak to breaking line of sight, practice finding corners and walls where you can test that safely. Turn every new piece of information into a small experiment in your next game.
If you plan long term, pick a small set of high impact Twisteds to fully research. Usually these are enemies that appear on many floors or are especially dangerous when misunderstood. Reaching a high research level on a few key Twisteds can drastically reduce how often they surprise you in deep runs.
Finally, remember that research is a marathon, not a sprint. It keeps progressing across all your play sessions, and there is no penalty for taking breaks from it. Combine it with your normal goals, such as ichor farming, toon unlocking, or event participation, instead of treating it as a separate grind that must be finished quickly.
