18 Currency and Progression

Ichor

Ichor is your long term account progression resource. It is not used inside a run, and you cannot lose it by dying. Any time you finish a run and return to the hub, your ichor totals are updated.

You primarily spend ichor to unlock permanent things that change how many options you have, not how strong a single run becomes right away. Typical ichor sinks are new toons, trinkets, and some global unlocks tied to progression systems. Because ichor is slow to earn at the start, every purchase choice matters.

Two properties define ichor for learning purposes. First, it has no hard cap, so every run contributes a little more toward long term goals. Second, the price of later unlocks is usually higher, so your early spending decisions affect how quickly you can reach mid and late game content.

Ichor is permanent account progression currency. Treat it as an investment resource, not something to dump into every new option the moment it appears.

Tapes

Tapes are your more flexible, medium term currency. Where ichor focuses on unlocking content, tapes are usually tied to recurring systems, conveniences, and shop purchases that affect your runs.

You commonly see tapes connected to Dandy’s Shop and other repeatable costs that can be paid many times over your account’s lifetime. They are usually earned more steadily than ichor, but can also disappear faster if you spend impulsively.

Tapes do not define which toons or trinkets exist in your account, but they heavily influence how smooth your runs feel and how easily you can adapt to different situations through purchases and services.

Tapes are repeatable utility currency. Expect to spend them often, and plan around having a small reserve instead of emptying your balance on every run.

Earning Currency

You earn ichor and tapes mainly by playing runs and interacting with progression systems. The exact values vary with floor level, performance, and sometimes event modifiers, but the pattern is consistent: higher risk runs tend to produce more income.

The most important factor is how high you climb before you end the run. Surviving to higher floors usually increases both ichor and tape rewards, even if you do not fully clear everything. Efficient completion of objectives, such as machines and research tasks, also contributes, though it should not tempt you into suicidally greedy play.

There are also side sources. Research milestones, unlock milestones, and event quests often pay out extra currency. These rewards are important for early and mid game because they represent large chunks of income compared to what you get from a single short run.

You do not lose previously earned ichor and tapes for dying, but failed runs waste time that could have been spent on safer, consistent farming. That is why currency progression is always a balance between pushing high floors for better payouts and stabilizing your survival to ensure steady income.

For long term growth, consistent, safe income beats risky, inconsistent spikes. Aim for runs you can finish reliably rather than chasing one huge high floor payout.

Spending Currency Efficiently

Good spending is about timing and priorities. A new unlock is only efficient if you can actually use it often. Buying a niche toon or trinket that barely fits your playstyle is usually worse than investing in broad, always relevant tools.

Efficient spending also means thinking in terms of opportunity cost. Every ichor or tape spent on a low impact option delays higher tier unlocks that might transform your runs. You should evaluate purchases by asking two questions: how often will I use this, and how much easier will it make future currency farming.

A simple way to compare potential buys is to imagine how many runs they will influence. A strong generalist toon, a key survival trinket, or an account wide benefit that applies to all characters is usually worth buying early, even if the price looks high. A very specific build piece for a niche setup can wait until later, when you already have your core roster and tools.

Finally, avoid overcommitting to a single direction too early. If all of your ichor and tapes go into one playstyle, you can get stuck when the game or a specific floor demands a different approach. A small amount of diversification, such as one good extractor toon, one strong survival option, and a couple of flexible trinkets, pays off in adaptability.

Efficient spending focuses on high impact, high usage unlocks first. Anything you use in most runs should be prioritized over niche or flashy options.

Unlocking Toons

Unlocking toons is one of the main uses of ichor and a major part of feeling your account progress. New toons change how you approach runs, what roles you can fill, and which team compositions are possible.

Each toon usually has an unlock requirement and a currency cost. The requirement might be a progression milestone, a research goal, or a specific achievement. The currency cost is most often ichor, sometimes with other conditions layered on top.

Since toons define your roles in machines, distraction, and survival, your first unlocks should cover basic needs. You want at least one comfortable extractor, one reliable survivor or distractor, and ideally a toon that can flex between roles. This lets you adapt to random teammates and random floor conditions.

Once you have a functional spread, later toon unlocks become more specialized. Some cover very high floor play, others support team focused strategies, and some exist for events or unique challenges. At that stage you should unlock characters that match the goals you are actively pursuing rather than buying everything in order.

Spend ichor on core, frequently used toons before chasing niche or highly specialized characters. A strong base roster multiplies the value of every future unlock.

Unlocking Trinkets

Trinkets are usually cheaper than toons but just as influential, since they interact with extraction, survival, and team roles. Unlocking a trinket does not mean it is always active, but it enters the pool of options available to your toons when you build them.

Because you can only equip a few trinkets on any toon, the quality of your unlocked pool matters more than its size. Early on, a small set of strong, general purpose trinkets is better than a large collection of weak or hyper situational ones.

Common early priorities are trinkets that improve survivability, stamina stability, or machine interaction. These help you across almost every role. Later, you can add trinkets that specialize in extraction speed, distraction power, or support utility, once you already have a solid baseline.

Trinkets also interact with the toons you own. A powerful extraction trinket is worth more if you already have an extraction focused toon that can exploit it. In contrast, unlocking a very specific trinket for a playstyle you cannot yet support will feel underwhelming and slow your progression.

Unlock trinkets that strengthen your baseline gameplay first, such as survival and stamina aids, before investing in highly specialized build pieces.

Progression Roadmap

Account progression in Dandy’s World naturally falls into three phases. In the beginning, you are limited by knowledge and basic unlocks. In the middle, you refine your roster and builds. In the late game, you optimize for high floor consistency and specialized goals like farming or challenges.

Currency and progression tie these phases together. In each phase, you earn and spend ichor and tapes with a different focus. The roadmap is not about rushing to the end as fast as possible, but about using each phase to prepare for the demands of the next one.

In the beginner stage, your highest priorities are learning core mechanics and acquiring a small but strong set of toons and trinkets that work in most situations. In mid game, you branch out, cover missing roles, and start aiming at specific objectives such as research farming or higher floor milestones. In late game, you shape your toolkit into specialized builds that can handle deep runs, team coordination, and demanding challenges efficiently.

The following sections describe how currency choices and unlock priorities typically change as you move through these stages.

Beginner Progression

At the start, you have very little currency and almost no flexibility. Your focus should be survival and learning, not high floor pushing. Every early ichor and tape purchase should aim to make your average run safer and more reliable.

Begin by identifying which starting toon feels most natural to you, then steer your early unlocks to complement that character. If you like extracting, your first major unlock should cover survival or distraction so that you are not helpless in a chase. If you naturally play safe and evasive, a more direct extractor is a good first investment so you can contribute consistently to machines.

For trinkets, choose a few that directly address your biggest struggles. If you run out of stamina in chases, buy a stamina focused option. If you keep dying in two hits, pick up a survivability trinket. Do not worry yet about high floor scaling or extremely narrow synergies. Your goal is to reduce deaths on low and mid floors so you actually reach the point where higher payouts start to matter.

Tapes in beginner progression are best used in ways that make each run feel smoother, but you should avoid overspending between every floor. Keep a small tape reserve so that when a particularly valuable shop offer appears, you can actually afford it. Reaching a modest, consistent floor range where you rarely die early is the main milestone of this stage.

During beginner progression, prioritize learning, survival, and one or two reliable roles. Do not rush high floors at the cost of frequent early deaths.

Mid-Game Progression

Mid game begins when you can reliably reach a certain floor range without constant wipes and have a few solid toons and trinkets unlocked. Your currency income becomes more predictable, and you can start planning runs around specific goals.

In this phase, you should work on rounding out your roster and filling role gaps. If you only have extractors and no distractors, your team options are limited. If you only own survival focused characters, you will slow down machine progression. Spend ichor to secure at least one strong option each for extraction, distraction, and flexible survival or support.

Trinket unlocks in mid game should target synergies with your favorite toons. If you have an extraction specialist, buy trinkets that increase machine effectiveness or reduce skill check risk. If you enjoy distracting, emphasize stamina efficiency and movement aids so you can hold aggro longer and safer.

Mid game is also when you intentionally engage with farming strategies. Some runs may focus on research or ichor gain instead of pure floor pushing. Currency decisions now serve two purposes. They help you climb higher, and they make your farming runs more efficient, which in turn fuels faster unlocking.

Finally, this is the right stage to experiment with different builds. Test combinations, see what feels comfortable, and only then commit major ichor and tape investments to fully supporting a particular style. The mistakes you avoid here make late game much smoother.

Mid game progression should complete your core toolkit and prepare efficient farming setups, not just chase the highest floor number you can reach once.

Late-Game Progression

Late game starts when you own a wide range of toons and trinkets, can reach high floors consistently, and have spare currency beyond basic unlocks. At this point, progression becomes about refinement, efficiency, and specific achievements rather than simple access to content.

Your ichor spending shifts toward specialized or expensive unlocks that serve dedicated purposes. You might buy a toon that excels in deep run extraction, a niche survival expert for dangerous floor ranges, or a character crucial for certain team strategies. Since you already have generalists covered, niche picks start to make sense.

Trinket decisions in late game are about perfecting builds. You look for exact combinations that optimize extraction speed, distraction control, or high floor survival under pressure. Individual trinket unlocks may seem minor, but completing a powerful set can dramatically increase your success rate at the very top.

Tapes now support frequent rerolling and opportunistic upgrades. You can afford to spend more aggressively in shops to chase particular items or enhancements because your overall income is high enough to tolerate it. However, even in late game, keeping a margin for emergency purchases and unexpected opportunities remains wise.

At this stage you also think about currency in terms of time investment. You deliberately choose whether to grind for ichor, research, or event rewards, and you tailor your builds and teams for that purpose. Efficient routing, risk management, and coordination become key topics, and your currency pool serves as both a record of your past choices and a tool to push even higher.

In late game, aim for high efficiency and focused goals. Use your large toolkit to build specialized setups for deep runs, farming, and challenges instead of spreading effort randomly.
