Our Galaxy as a Home in Space

The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains the Solar System, the Sun, Earth, and everything we can see in our night sky with ordinary starlight. When people speak about "our galaxy", they mean the Milky Way. It is a vast collection of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter, all bound together by gravity.

From Earth, the Milky Way appears as a faint glowing band stretching across the sky. This band is not a cloud close to us. It is the combined light of enormous numbers of distant stars lying in the disk of our galaxy. Because we live inside the galaxy, we see its crowded plane as a bright strip.

The Milky Way is not the whole universe. It is one galaxy among many billions of galaxies in the universe.

Why It Looks Like a Band

The Milky Way has a flattened structure, with many of its stars concentrated in a broad disk. Our Solar System lies inside that disk. When we look along the plane of the disk, our line of sight passes through many stars, so the sky looks bright. When we look above or below the plane, we see fewer stars and the sky looks darker.

Dust in the galaxy also affects what we see. Interstellar dust absorbs and scatters visible light, so some parts of the Milky Way appear dark or split by dark lanes. This is one reason why the center of the galaxy is difficult to observe in ordinary visible light.

Main Parts of the Milky Way

The Milky Way is usually described as having several major parts. It has a central bulge, a disk, spiral arms within the disk, and a large halo around the galaxy. At the very center lies a supermassive black hole, which is discussed here only as part of the Milky Way's structure.

The disk contains many stars, gas clouds, and dust. This is where most star formation happens. The spiral arms are regions in the disk where gas and young stars are especially common. The bulge is a dense central region with many older stars. The halo extends far beyond the visible disk and contains sparse stars, globular clusters, and a great deal of dark matter.

The Shape of the Milky Way

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, more specifically a barred spiral galaxy. This means that its central region includes an elongated bar-shaped distribution of stars, and spiral arms extend outward from this bar.

Astronomers could not simply step outside the galaxy and take a picture. Instead, they inferred its shape by mapping the positions of stars, gas clouds, and star-forming regions. Radio observations, especially of hydrogen gas, were very important because radio waves can pass through dust better than visible light.

The Sun's Place in the Milky Way

The Sun is not near the center of the Milky Way. It lies in the disk, in a smaller spiral feature called the Orion Arm, or Orion Spur, between larger spiral arms. This location is far from the galactic center, roughly about $8 \text{ kpc}$ away, which is about $26{,}000$ light years.

The Sun orbits the center of the galaxy. Like other stars in the disk, it moves around the galactic center due to gravity. One complete orbit takes a very long time, on the order of a few hundred million years. This interval is sometimes called a galactic year.

The Solar System is moving through the Milky Way. The Sun is not fixed in place within the galaxy.

Size and Contents

The Milky Way is enormous. Its visible disk is roughly about $100{,}000$ light years across, though estimates vary depending on what is included. It contains hundreds of billions of stars. In addition to stars, it contains planets, nebulae, gas clouds, dust, star clusters, and dark matter.

A large fraction of the galaxy's mass is not in visible stars. Observations of orbital motion show that unseen matter, called dark matter, must be present in a large halo around the Milky Way. This dark matter does not shine like stars, but its gravity strongly affects the galaxy.

The Galactic Center

The center of the Milky Way lies in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius. This region is crowded and dusty, so it is hard to observe in visible light. Infrared and radio observations help astronomers study it.

At the galactic center is a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*. Stars near this object move very rapidly, and their motions provide strong evidence for its existence. The mass of this black hole is millions of times the mass of the Sun.

The black hole itself does not pull the whole galaxy around in the way beginners sometimes imagine. The Milky Way's structure and motions are determined by the combined gravity of all its mass, including stars, gas, and dark matter.

Star Populations in the Milky Way

Different parts of the Milky Way contain different kinds of stars. The disk contains many young and middle-aged stars, along with gas and dust where new stars can form. The bulge and halo contain mostly older stars. Globular clusters, which are dense groups of very old stars, are found mainly in the halo.

This tells astronomers that the Milky Way has changed over time. Some parts are still actively forming stars, while others preserve much older stellar populations.

How We Study the Milky Way

Because we are inside the Milky Way, studying its full structure is harder than studying some distant galaxies. Astronomers must build a map from many kinds of observations. Visible light shows many stars, but dust blocks some regions. Infrared light can pass through dust better, and radio waves reveal gas clouds, especially hydrogen.

One important tool is spectroscopy. By studying the light from stars and gas, astronomers can measure motion, composition, and temperature. The Doppler effect helps determine whether parts of the galaxy are moving toward us or away from us, which helps reveal the galaxy's rotation.

Stars and gas in the Milky Way orbit the galactic center. By measuring speeds at different distances from the center, astronomers learn about the galaxy's mass distribution. These measurements show that the outer parts of the Milky Way move faster than expected if only visible matter were present.

This is one of the key pieces of evidence for dark matter in the galaxy.

The observed rotation of the Milky Way cannot be explained well by visible matter alone. This is strong evidence for a large amount of dark matter.

The Milky Way and Nearby Companions

The Milky Way is not isolated. It has smaller companion galaxies, including the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud. It is also part of a larger collection of galaxies called the Local Group. These relationships help astronomers understand how galaxies grow by interaction and merging.

The Milky Way has likely absorbed smaller galaxies in the past, and it may continue to do so in the future. Streams of stars found in the halo are evidence of such past interactions.

Big Picture
