1.2. Camera Types and Controls

DSLR, Mirrorless, Compact, and Smartphone Cameras

At the beginner level you do not need every camera type, but understanding the differences helps you use whatever you own more effectively and choose upgrades wisely.

DSLR cameras use a mirror and optical viewfinder. Light enters the lens, hits a mirror, then bounces up into a prism so you look through the lens with your eye. When you press the shutter, the mirror flips up, light hits the sensor, and the image is recorded. DSLRs are usually larger and heavier, with excellent battery life and a huge choice of lenses and accessories. The optical viewfinder has no lag and works perfectly in bright light. Common beginner drawbacks are bulk, noise from the mirror slap, and usually limited autofocus performance during live view or video.

Mirrorless cameras remove the mirror and use an electronic viewfinder or the rear screen. Light goes directly from the lens to the sensor, and the camera displays a live image. This design allows smaller bodies, silent or very quiet shooting, and advanced autofocus that uses the whole frame. Because you see a digital preview, you can often see exposure, white balance, and picture style before taking the shot. Downsides include shorter battery life and, in some cheaper models, viewfinders that can be less comfortable than optical ones, especially in very bright settings.

Compact cameras, often called point and shoot cameras, combine a fixed lens and a small body. You do not change lenses. Controls are usually simplified, although some advanced compacts add manual modes and raw shooting. Image quality ranges from basic to excellent depending on sensor size and lens. Compacts are about convenience. They are easy to carry and use, but less flexible in focal length range and depth of field control than interchangeable-lens cameras.

Smartphone cameras are now the most common cameras. They use very small sensors and lenses but powerful processing. Features like night mode, portrait mode, and HDR rely heavily on software. Smartphones are always with you, connect directly to the internet, and are great for learning composition and timing. Limitations include less control over depth of field, poorer performance in very low light compared to larger cameras, and less ergonomic handling, especially for fast action or long sessions.

For this course you can follow along with any camera that lets you control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and that gives some access to focus and exposure settings. Many compacts and almost all DSLRs and mirrorless cameras do this, and many smartphones offer advanced controls through built-in or third-party apps.

Camera Anatomy

Although designs differ, most cameras share a common layout. Learning the basic parts helps you translate instructions between brands and models.

The lens at the front focuses light on to the sensor. On interchangeable-lens cameras you attach and remove lenses via the lens mount, which has electrical contacts so camera and lens can communicate autofocus, aperture, and image stabilization settings. A focus ring around the lens lets you adjust focus manually. Some lenses also have a zoom ring to change focal length.

Behind the lens is the camera body. On top you typically find a mode dial, a shutter button under your index finger, one or more control dials for changing exposure settings, and sometimes a hot shoe for attaching accessories like an external flash or microphone. The top may also hold a built-in pop-up flash.

The back of the camera usually holds the LCD screen and, on DSLRs and many mirrorless cameras, a viewfinder. Nearby you find playback, menu, and navigation buttons. A directional pad or joystick helps you move through menus and select focus points. Some bodies also have custom buttons that you can assign to frequently used functions.

On the side of the camera you typically find doors that cover memory card slots and ports, such as USB, HDMI, microphone, or remote-release connectors. The bottom of the camera has a battery compartment and a metal tripod mount with a standard thread.

Smartphones follow a different layout but the ideas are similar. Lenses are usually on the back, sometimes in a group of multiple lenses. The screen serves as both the viewfinder and control panel. Buttons are few, often only a volume rocker and power button, but you can often reassign volume buttons to trigger the shutter.

Spend a few minutes with your own camera and locate each of these components. Even a basic understanding of where things are will make learning controls and menus much easier.

Buttons and Controls

Buttons and dials are how you tell the camera what you want. Although different brands use different names, the main controls are similar.

The shutter button is the most important. A half-press usually triggers autofocus and metering. A full press takes the photo. Learning to use a light half-press helps you pre-focus and be ready for the decisive moment.

Control dials change exposure settings such as shutter speed, aperture, or exposure compensation, depending on the mode you are in. Many cameras have a front dial and a rear dial. For example, in one mode the front dial might change shutter speed while the rear dial changes aperture. On simpler cameras a single dial combined with buttons performs the same job.

The mode dial selects the shooting mode, such as Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual. It may also include scene modes, such as Portrait or Landscape, and sometimes video or custom modes.

Buttons labeled ISO, WB, or +/- give quick access to ISO, white balance, and exposure compensation. Often, you need to hold the button while turning a dial to change the setting. On some cameras these functions are accessed through buttons on a directional pad.

An AF-ON button, if present, triggers autofocus separately from the shutter button. This is used for back-button focus. An AE-L or AEL button locks exposure, so you can meter from one part of the scene and recompose without changing the measured exposure.

Menu and Info or Display buttons control how information is shown on the screen and let you open the main menu. A playback button shows the images you have taken so you can review sharpness, exposure, and composition.

On smartphones, most controls appear on the touchscreen. Tapping icons changes modes, exposure, and focus. Volume buttons often act as physical shutter buttons, which can make the phone easier to hold steady.

Many cameras allow you to customize what some buttons do. Early on, keep things simple. Learn what each button currently does, then consider customization once you know which settings you use most often.

Viewfinder and LCD Screen

The viewfinder and LCD screen are your windows into the scene. They show you how the camera sees the world and what your settings are doing.

An optical viewfinder, found on DSLRs, uses mirrors and prisms so you look directly through the lens. The image is clear and natural in real time. Optical finders work well in bright sunlight and have no electronic lag. Inside, you usually see a focus point display and a simple exposure scale.

An electronic viewfinder, found on most mirrorless cameras, is a tiny screen you look into. It shows a live image from the sensor. The key advantage is that it can preview exposure, white balance, and picture style in real time. You can also overlay histograms, focus peaking, and other aids. In very dark scenes, the EVF can brighten the view so you can still compose. Downsides can include a slight delay and, in some models, a more artificial look.

The rear LCD screen is available on almost all cameras. It doubles as a live-view display and as a playback screen. Tilt or fully articulating screens are particularly helpful for low-angle or high-angle shots, and for video work. In bright sun, it can be harder to see, so shading it with your hand or using the viewfinder may be helpful.

Smartphones use the entire screen as the live view. This makes the camera very intuitive to aim, but also encourages shooting at arm’s length, which can lead to more camera shake. Bracing your elbows against your body or using two hands helps keep things stable.

Many modern cameras, including smartphones, use touchscreens. You can tap to set the focus point, change settings, and swipe through images. Combining touch controls with physical buttons gives you both speed and precision.

Get into the habit of reading the information around the image in your viewfinder or on screen. Look at shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, and focus indicators. Being aware of this data while you shoot is one of the biggest steps toward intentional photography.

Shooting Modes

Shooting modes control how much the camera decides for you and how much you set manually. Understanding them lets you move beyond guessing and choose the level of control you need.

Fully automatic modes are often labeled Auto, sometimes with a green icon. In this mode the camera chooses aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and often flash, and may even decide when to use scene-specific processing. This can be useful when you are completely new, but it does not teach you much and can behave unpredictably, such as firing flash when you do not want it.

Program mode is usually labeled P. The camera chooses a balanced combination of shutter speed and aperture for correct exposure while you can still change ISO, white balance, and exposure compensation. Many cameras allow program shift. This means you can rotate a dial to cycle through different shutter and aperture combinations that give the same exposure. Program mode is good for quick shooting in changing conditions when you want some control but do not want to think about both exposure variables.

Aperture Priority mode is labeled A or Av. You choose the aperture and the camera picks a shutter speed that produces the correct exposure for the metered scene. This is a good choice when depth of field is your main concern, such as portraits with a blurred background or landscapes where you want most of the scene in focus. You can still adjust exposure compensation and ISO.

Shutter Priority mode is labeled S or Tv. You set the shutter speed and the camera selects the aperture. Use this when motion control is most important, for example when you want to freeze action with a fast shutter or create motion blur with a slower shutter. Again, you can use exposure compensation and ISO to guide the camera.

Manual mode is labeled M. You set both shutter speed and aperture, and often ISO as well, although some cameras allow Auto ISO within Manual mode. Manual is useful when you want completely consistent exposure across many shots or when the meter would be fooled by tricky lighting, such as strong backlighting. You watch the exposure meter and adjust your settings accordingly.

Many cameras also offer scene modes such as Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night, or Macro. These are automated modes that bias settings to suit a particular subject, such as using a wide aperture for portraits or a fast shutter for sports. They can be a gentle introduction to how different settings affect your images, but they are less flexible than learning to use the core exposure modes.

On smartphones, shooting modes typically appear as icons or labels like Portrait, Night, Pro, or Manual. In Pro or Manual modes you can usually adjust shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and sometimes focus and exposure compensation.

Whatever camera you use, make a habit of choosing a mode intentionally. Ask yourself whether depth of field, motion, or consistency is most important for the scene, then pick the mode that supports that goal.

Camera Menus and Settings

Camera menus can feel overwhelming at first, but most items fall into a few categories. Learning to navigate them calmly will help you set up your camera once and then spend more time focusing on shooting.

The first category covers image quality and format. Here you choose JPEG, raw, or both, and you set resolution and compression level. You may also find settings for color space and picture style or creative looks. For now, pick a single approach and stick with it so that you spend more mental energy on learning exposure and composition.

The second category involves autofocus and metering options. Autofocus settings control how the camera decides what to focus on and whether it tracks moving subjects. Metering options control how the camera measures brightness in the scene to suggest an exposure, for example evaluative, center-weighted, or spot metering. At the beginner stage, the default general-purpose modes are usually fine.

The third category contains custom functions and button assignments. These menus let you change what various buttons do, how dials behave, and how information is displayed. You do not need to adjust everything. Start with one or two small changes that clearly solve a problem you have, such as assigning ISO to a convenient button if you change ISO frequently.

Another important category is playback and display options. Here you can enable features such as highlight warnings, RGB histograms, or different display styles. You might also find settings for grid overlays, electronic level, and guidelines on the screen to help with composition.

Setup menus contain date and time, file numbering, language, sensor cleaning, and power-saving features. Make sure your date and time are correct and that your camera is set to automatically power down after a reasonable period to save battery.

Most cameras allow you to create a favorites menu or custom tab where you can collect the items you change most often. Features such as format card, image quality, ISO settings, and autofocus mode can all be gathered in one place so you do not have to dig through long lists.

Smartphones organize settings partly in the camera app and partly in the system settings. Within the camera app, look for options such as file format, grid lines, Pro mode, and stabilization. In system settings you may find additional permissions and options, such as allowing raw capture in some models.

Spend some deliberate time exploring your menus, but do it methodically. Change one setting at a time, test it, and note what it does. Over time, the menus will feel like a toolbox rather than a maze, and you will be able to configure the camera to support how you like to shoot.

Important:

  1. Know which shooting mode you are in and why you chose it.
  2. Learn how to change shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation quickly.
  3. Familiarize yourself with your viewfinder or screen information so you can see settings at a glance.
  4. Set up image quality and essential autofocus options in the menu before an important shoot.
