13.1. Photo Editing Basics

Why Edit Photos?

Editing is where you refine what you captured and guide how viewers experience your photo. Even basic adjustments can turn a flat, dull image into something closer to what you saw and felt when taking the picture.

Cameras record scenes in a very literal way. They often get brightness, contrast, and color slightly off compared to your memory. Editing lets you correct technical flaws, compensate for camera limitations, and express your creative intent.

There are a few common reasons to edit almost every photo. You can correct exposure so the image is not too bright or too dark. You can adjust contrast to make the photo less flat and more punchy or softer and more gentle. You can balance highlights and shadows to recover detail where the camera struggled. You can crop and straighten to improve composition and remove distractions.

For this chapter, the focus is on simple global adjustments, not complex retouching or heavy manipulation. Think of these tools as a digital version of the darkroom basics that photographers have used for decades.

Basic editing is not cheating. It is a normal and expected part of digital photography, as long as you are honest about what you change when accuracy matters.

Non-Destructive Editing

Non-destructive editing means you adjust a photo without permanently changing the original file. You can always go back to the untouched version, re-edit it, or make several different versions without losing quality.

The most common way to edit non-destructively is to use software that stores your edits as instructions instead of baking them into the pixels immediately. Programs like Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, and many mobile apps work this way. When you change exposure or contrast, the software records those changes in a separate file or database and only applies them when you view or export the image.

Another method is to use layers and adjustment layers in pixel editors like Photoshop. You place your changes on top of the original image in separate layers so you can hide, tweak, or delete them later.

If you edit JPEGs repeatedly and save over the same file, you slowly lose quality because of compression. With non-destructive workflows you always keep an unedited master, usually a RAW file or a high quality TIFF or original JPEG, and treat everything else as a version.

Always keep at least one untouched copy of your original photo. Never do heavy editing by repeatedly saving over the same JPEG.

When you start editing, get into the habit of working non-destructively. Import your photos into your software, make adjustments there, and only export final versions for sharing or printing.

Exposure

Exposure in editing controls how bright or dark the overall image appears. The in-camera exposure settings affect the original capture, but the exposure slider in editing software lets you fine-tune that brightness afterward.

The exposure adjustment is usually a global control. When you move it up, the whole image brightens. When you move it down, the whole image darkens. This is similar to adding or subtracting exposure in the camera in terms of effect, although you are working with what the sensor already recorded.

Most editing software represents exposure in stops. A change of +1 exposure makes the image one stop brighter. A change of −1 exposure makes it one stop darker. This matches the concept of exposure stops from camera work.

A change of +1 in the exposure slider corresponds to 1 stop of brightness increase. A change of −1 corresponds to 1 stop of brightness decrease.

When you adjust exposure, watch both the bright and dark areas. If you raise exposure too far, highlights may clip and lose detail. If you lower it too much, shadows may block up into pure black. It can help to turn on a clipping warning in your software. This usually shows pure white or pure black areas with colored overlays.

As a beginner, start your editing sequence by setting exposure first. Aim for an overall brightness that feels natural for the scene and style you want, and then move on to more specific controls like contrast and highlights and shadows.

Contrast

Contrast controls the difference between dark and light areas in your photo. High contrast images have deep shadows and bright highlights that give a bold and punchy look. Low contrast images have gentle transitions and a softer appearance.

In most editors, the contrast slider affects the entire tonal range. When you increase contrast, midtones get pushed away from middle gray. Lights become lighter and darks become darker. When you decrease contrast, tones are pulled closer together and the image looks flatter and more muted.

Contrast changes can seriously affect mood. Portraits often look better with moderate contrast so skin tones remain soft and natural. Harsh midday landscapes sometimes benefit from increased contrast to restore depth and drama. Foggy scenes usually look good with lower contrast to preserve that hazy atmosphere.

Increasing contrast boosts the separation between light and dark. Decreasing contrast reduces that separation and makes the image flatter.

Be careful not to overdo contrast. Too much contrast can crush shadows into pure black and blow out highlights into pure white, both of which destroy detail. If you notice this happening, reduce the contrast or use more targeted tools such as highlights, shadows, and curves, which give you finer control.

Highlights and Shadows

Highlights and shadows controls allow you to adjust bright and dark areas separately instead of changing the whole image equally. This is useful when you want to recover detail or balance a high contrast scene without making everything look strange.

The highlights slider targets bright parts of the photo. Dragging it down darkens bright areas and can often bring back detail in bright skies or reflective surfaces, especially if you edited from a RAW file. Dragging it up brightens the highlights further, which can add sparkle but may also cause clipping if pushed too far.

The shadows slider targets darker parts of the photo. Dragging it up brightens the shadows and reveals detail in dark areas, such as people in shade or interiors. Dragging it down deepens the shadows and can add drama or mood.

Highlight and shadow recovery has limits. If the original capture has completely clipped areas, no amount of editing can restore detail there. You can only work with information that the sensor actually recorded.

Use highlights and shadows to balance contrast locally. Reduce highlights to tame bright areas, and lift shadows to reveal detail in dark regions, but avoid making everything the same midtone.

When using these sliders, watch for unnatural results. Lifting shadows too much can make the image look flat and noisy. Reducing highlights too much can make bright areas look gray and dull. Aim for a natural balance, where important details are visible but the image still has depth.

White and Black Points

The white and black point define the brightest and darkest meaningful tones in your image. Setting them correctly helps you use the full tonal range, which often makes the photo look more lively and well defined.

Most editors provide white and black sliders that adjust these points. The white slider affects the brightest parts, while the black slider affects the deepest shadows. They are more focused than exposure and contrast and let you anchor the extremes of the tonal scale.

A typical approach is to move the white slider up until the brightest parts of the image just begin to clip, then back off slightly. Do the opposite with the black slider. Move it down until some deep shadow clipping appears, then lift it slightly. Many programs show clipping warnings or allow you to hold a key to preview clipping as you adjust.

You can think of it like stretching a rubber band. By pulling the white and black points outward, you stretch the tonal range of the image so it covers a wider spectrum from dark to light. This usually increases perceived contrast and clarity without overly affecting midtones.

A solid workflow is: set overall exposure, then adjust white and black points so you have meaningful pure blacks and near pure whites without losing important detail.

Not every image needs true pure black or pure white. High key images, such as bright airy portraits, may benefit from raised blacks and softer whites. Low key images, such as dark moody scenes, may keep shadows very deep. Let the subject and mood guide you.

Cropping and Straightening

Cropping and straightening are simple but powerful tools for improving composition after the shot. They let you refine framing, change aspect ratio, remove distractions, and correct tilted horizons or leaning buildings.

Straightening corrects rotation so that horizontal or vertical lines become level or vertical. Crooked horizons in landscape photos are especially distracting, so it is worth fixing them. Most editors include a straightening tool where you drag a line along a reference edge, like the horizon, and the software rotates the image accordingly.

Cropping cuts away parts of the photo. You can crop to zoom in on the subject, remove unwanted edges, or improve balance. For example, if your subject is centered but would look better on a rule of thirds line, a slight crop can help.

When cropping, pay attention to aspect ratio, which is the relationship between width and height. Common ratios are 3:2, 4:3, and 1:1. Locking the aspect ratio while cropping helps avoid odd shapes that may not print or display well. Sometimes changing the aspect ratio intentionally, for example to 16:9 for a wide cinematic feel, can enhance the image.

Avoid over-cropping. Heavy crops reduce resolution and can reveal noise and softness. Try to compose well in-camera and use cropping for refinement, not rescue.

Think about edges and corners when you crop. Remove small bright spots, half objects, and distractions at the edges if they do not add to the story. Make sure important elements are placed intentionally within the frame. A few simple crop and straighten adjustments at the end of your editing process can make a big difference in how strong and professional your photo feels.
