6.3. Off-Camera Flash

Why Use Off-Camera Flash?

Off-camera flash simply means the flash is not locked to the camera’s hot shoe. The light can come from the side, above, behind, or anywhere you place it. This one change transforms flash from a harsh on-camera burst into a controlled, flattering light source.

On-camera flash usually points straight at your subject. This flattens features, creates sharp shadows behind them, and often produces shiny, “flashed” skin and red-eye. Once you move the flash away from the lens, you can shape the light just like studio photographers do.

The main benefits are control, depth, and creativity. With off-camera flash you can choose where shadows fall, how strong they are, and how much the subject stands out from the background. You can separate your subject by lighting them while keeping the background darker, or you can balance flash with ambient light so the scene feels natural.

You also gain repeatability. Once you find a flash position and power that works, you can recreate that look on demand, no matter what the ambient light is doing. This makes off-camera flash especially useful for portraits, product work, and any situation where you want a consistent style.

You do not need a studio or expensive gear to start. A single small flash, a way to trigger it, and somewhere to put it are enough to dramatically change your results.

Wireless Flash

To use off-camera flash, you must trigger it without it sitting in the camera’s hot shoe. Modern cameras and flashes often support wireless communication, but the methods vary. The key is reliability and control, not brand or price.

There are three common ways to trigger an off-camera flash. The first is optical line-of-sight systems. Some cameras have a built-in “commander” flash that sends light pulses the off-camera flash can see. This is convenient but requires that the flashes see each other and can be unreliable in bright sunlight or behind obstacles.

The second and most popular method is radio triggering. A small transmitter sits on your camera hot shoe and sends radio signals to receivers, which are either built into the flash or attached to it. Radio works over longer distances and does not need line-of-sight. It is the most flexible option for indoor and outdoor work and is the standard choice for serious off-camera flash use.

The third method is manual optical “slave” triggering. In this case the off-camera flash fires when it sees another flash. This can be useful in a simple studio where one flash on the camera triggers other manual flashes around the scene. However, it can be confused by pre-flashes from TTL systems and is less precise.

Wireless systems can work in different modes. Manual wireless means you set the flash power yourself, such as 1/4 or 1/16. TTL wireless communicates with the camera’s meter and adjusts power automatically. Many radio triggers allow both, and often give you groups and channels. Groups let you control several flashes together, for example changing all “group A” lights at once. Channels prevent interference from other photographers using similar gear nearby.

When choosing a wireless system, look for solid range, clear power control, group support, and compatibility with your camera brand. Simpler but reliable triggers are better than feature-rich ones that misfire.

Positioning the Flash

Where you place the flash matters more than which flash you own. The position of the light relative to your subject and your camera controls the shape and mood of the image.

There are three basic choices to think about: height, angle around the subject, and distance. A simple starting point for portraits is to place the flash at about 45 degrees to the side of the camera and slightly above the subject’s eye level, aimed down toward their face. This creates natural-looking shadows that give shape to the features. Moving the flash closer makes the light softer if you are using a modifier, and moving it farther makes the light harder and less forgiving.

Think of the flash as a small sun you can place anywhere. If you move it near the lens axis, shadows become flatter and less noticeable. Move it off to the side and shadows deepen, which adds drama and depth. Move it behind the subject and you get rim or back light, which can separate them from a dark or busy background.

Distance is also important because light falls off with distance following the inverse square law. If you halve the distance between flash and subject, the light becomes four times brighter, which is two stops more light. This fast falloff means that if the flash is close, the subject can be bright while the background quickly goes dark. If the flash is far away, the subject and background receive more similar light, giving a flatter look.

If you double the distance, the light on the subject becomes four times weaker, which is 2 stops darker.

Experiment by walking your light around the subject. Photograph at 0 degrees (near the lens), 45 degrees, and 90 degrees to one side, and adjust height from eye level to above the head. You will see how small changes in position completely change the mood. Over time you will learn to “see” the resulting light before you even take the shot.

One-Light Setups

Learning off-camera flash is easiest when you start with a single light. One flash can create many classic looks if you position it well and use simple modifiers.

A very common beginner-friendly setup is a 45-degree key light. Place your subject facing slightly toward the camera. Position the flash to one side, about 45 degrees to the subject’s front, and just above eye level, angled downward. Soften it with a small softbox or umbrella, or by bouncing from a nearby wall. This creates soft, directional light with gentle shadows on the far side of the face. It is flattering for portraits and works in many situations.

Another simple setup is window mimic lighting. Imagine the flash is a window. Place it to the side of the subject and slightly behind the camera, higher than the subject and angled down. Use a large modifier or bounce from a big white wall or ceiling to make the light broad and soft. This gives an even, natural look similar to window light, ideal for lifestyle portraits and product shots.

You can also create dramatic low-key images with a single light. Place the flash at 90 degrees to the side of your subject or even slightly behind them. Aim it so that only one side of the face is lit, leaving the other in shadow. Control spill with grids or flags if available. This “short lighting” style helps slim faces and adds a cinematic feeling.

With one-light setups, the unlit side can be very dark. If you want to open the shadows without adding a second flash, use a reflector on the opposite side of the subject. This does not count as a separate light source in this context because it only bounces light you already have. A simple white foam board can be enough to lift shadows and make the image more balanced.

Moving around your subject while keeping the light stationary can also create variety. Shoot from different angles to see how the same single light shapes the face differently when you change your camera position.

Two-Light Setups

Once you are comfortable with a single off-camera flash, adding a second light gives you much more control over contrast and separation. The two lights usually take on different “jobs,” such as key and fill or key and rim.

The key light is your main light. It defines the direction and character of the lighting. The second light can be used as fill to soften shadows created by the key. In this case place the fill flash on the opposite side of the camera from the key light, closer to the camera axis, and at a lower power. The goal is to lighten the dark areas without removing them completely.

You can think of the brightness relationship between key and fill as a ratio. For example, if the key light is set to an exposure that looks correct on the lit side of the face and the fill is 2 stops dimmer, the shadow areas will be present but gentle. If the fill is only 1 stop dimmer than the key, the overall look is very soft and low contrast. If the fill is 3 or more stops dimmer, shadows become deeper and more dramatic.

Another common use for a second light is separation or rim lighting. Place the key light in a standard position at 30 to 45 degrees to one side of the subject’s face. Then place the second light behind the subject on the opposite side, aimed toward the back of their head and shoulders. Keep it out of the frame and control spill with a grid or flagged modifier if possible. This creates a bright outline that separates your subject from a darker background.

You can also use the second light to brighten or color the background. Place it behind the subject aimed at a wall or seamless paper. Adjust power until the background is lighter or more saturated. If you add a colored gel to this background light, you can introduce a tint without affecting the subject too much, as long as the key light is stronger on the subject.

When balancing two lights, change only one thing at a time. Keep the key light fixed, then raise or lower fill or rim power until the effect looks right. Avoid matching them exactly in brightness unless you specifically want flat, even light.

Multiple-Light Setups

More than two lights can be useful for complex scenes or very controlled studio portraits, but they also introduce complexity. As a beginner, think in terms of building up from a solid one-light setup.

A typical three-light setup adds a background or hair light to the key and fill lights described earlier. The key shapes the face, the fill lifts shadows, and the background or hair light adds separation. For example, you might use a softbox as key, a bare or small modified light as hair or rim placed behind the subject, and a flash aimed at the background to keep it from going completely dark.

You can also use multiple lights creatively. For instance, you might combine a soft key light with a colored gel light on the background and a second gel light used as an accent on one side of the subject. Each light has a specific purpose and should be adjusted separately.

The main challenge with multiple-light setups is control of spill and consistency. Every additional light can bounce off walls, ceilings, and floors, changing the look in ways that become hard to predict. Modifiers that control direction, such as grids and flags, become more important as you add lights.

A good workflow is to set and meter each light one at a time. Start with the background or accent lights off, and get the key light right. Then turn on and tune the fill. Then add the rim or background. If something looks wrong, turn off all but the key and rebuild.

Remember that more lights are not automatically better. Often, a well-placed single light plus a reflector can produce more natural and pleasing images than a cluttered three- or four-light setup.

Flash Modifiers

Flash by itself is a small, hard light source. Modifiers change the size, direction, and quality of that light. Choosing and using modifiers is central to getting the look you want from off-camera flash.

The most important idea is that a larger apparent light source produces softer light. A small bare flash head creates hard, sharp-edged shadows and specular highlights. Attach a softbox or open an umbrella and the effective size of the light source increases, especially when placed close to the subject. This softens edges and makes skin look more flattering.

Umbrellas are inexpensive and quick to set up. Shoot-through umbrellas let light spill in many directions and help create very soft light in small rooms. Reflective umbrellas bounce light back toward the subject and are slightly more directional. However, umbrellas can easily spill light onto background and surroundings, which is less ideal when you want tight control.

Softboxes are more controlled. They have opaque sides and front diffusion, so most of the light goes where you aim it. Rectangular softboxes mimic window light, while octaboxes create rounder catchlights in the eyes. Smaller softboxes are portable and great for outdoor portraits. Larger ones give very soft results but may catch wind more easily outdoors.

Grids narrow the beam of light. A grid attached to a softbox or bare flash restricts the spread so it lights only part of the scene. This is useful for keeping rim lights off the lens, avoiding flare, or lighting only a small area of the background. Flags and barn doors also help block light from parts of the scene you want to keep dark.
