4.1. Understanding Light

The Nature of Light

Light is the raw material of every photograph. A camera simply records how much light arrives at each point on the sensor and what color that light is. When you learn to see and control light, you gain control over the look and mood of your images.

Light behaves both like waves and like particles, but as a photographer you mostly care about how it travels in straight lines from a source, bounces off surfaces, and reaches your subject and camera. The key properties are its direction, intensity, color, and quality.

Your camera measures light as brightness values and color information. You control how much of that light is recorded with aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, but those settings only react to the light that already exists. Understanding the light itself lets you position your subject, choose locations, and decide whether you need to modify or add light to achieve your vision.

In practice, start paying attention to where light comes from, how it changes throughout the day, how it interacts with surfaces like walls, windows, and the ground, and how it affects the contrast and mood of a scene. This awareness matters more than any specific camera setting.

Hard vs Soft Light

Photographers talk about “hard” and “soft” light to describe the quality of shadows and contrast in a scene.

Hard light comes from a light source that is small relative to the subject and usually far away. It creates strong, dark, well defined shadows and high contrast. Midday sun on a clear day is a classic example. Edges of shadows are sharp, textures pop, and any imperfections on skin or surfaces are emphasized.

Soft light comes from a light source that is large relative to the subject or from light that has been scattered. It creates gentle, gradual transitions between light and shadow and lower contrast. An overcast sky or a large window with sheer curtains are examples. Shadows have soft edges, skin looks smoother, and details are less harsh.

The apparent size of the light source relative to the subject is what matters, not just the actual physical size.

Important rule:
A light source closer to the subject appears larger and produces softer light. A light source farther from the subject appears smaller and produces harder light, assuming its actual size does not change.

For example, a window that is two meters wide will produce softer light when your subject stands close to it than when they stand across a large room. The same principle applies to artificial lights with and without modifiers like softboxes or umbrellas.

Hard and soft light are not good or bad. They are creative choices. Hard light can give dramatic, punchy images with strong structure. Soft light can give flattering portraits and gentle, calm scenes. Your job is to recognize which quality of light suits your subject and intention.

Light Intensity

Light intensity is how bright the light is, or how much light energy reaches your subject and, in turn, your camera. In photography this is closely tied to exposure.

In-camera, light intensity is expressed as exposure values or stops. Every change of one stop doubles or halves the amount of light that reaches the sensor. You adjust for light intensity with aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and you can check the result using your exposure meter and histogram.

Although exposure itself is covered elsewhere, it helps to think of intensity in relation to sources. The midday sun has very high intensity. Open shade on a bright day has less. Indoors near a window has even less, and a dim room at night has very low intensity. Your exposure settings for each situation will be different, even if the quality and direction of light are similar.

You can also control intensity by altering the light source or path. You can reduce intensity with diffusers, flags, smaller apertures, or lower flash power, and you can increase intensity with brighter lights, reflectors, or wider apertures.

A simple way to train your eye is to notice how your camera settings change as you move between lighting situations. If you routinely need to use very high ISO or very slow shutter speeds, the light intensity is low. If you can use low ISO and fast shutter speeds, the light intensity is high.

Direction of Light

Direction of light describes the angle from which light strikes your subject relative to your camera position. Even with the same intensity and softness, changing the direction of light can completely change the look of a photo.

Common directions include light from the front, side, back, above, or a combination. The direction controls where shadows fall, how shapes are defined, and whether your subject appears flat or three dimensional.

You do not always need to move the light source. Often, you move yourself or your subject. If the sun is fixed in the sky, you can walk around your subject, or have them turn, to explore different directions of light.

Direction is a powerful storytelling tool. Light from behind can be dramatic and ethereal, while light from the front can be simple and clear. Side light can bring out texture. Once you understand this, you stop asking “What exposure settings should I use?” first and start asking “Where is the light, and from what direction?” which is more fundamental.

Light Falloff

Light falloff describes how quickly light intensity decreases as you move farther from a light source. In other words, it explains why a subject close to a lamp is much brighter than a subject a little farther away from the same lamp.

In natural light, falloff can be subtle when the light source is very far away, like the sun. In small spaces or with artificial lights, falloff becomes very obvious and can be used creatively to control contrast between your subject and the background.

If a subject is close to a small light source, the part of the scene near the light will be much brighter than the background. As you move the subject farther from the light, the difference between subject brightness and background brightness becomes smaller.

This is important for portrait and product photography. You can use light falloff to keep backgrounds dark and simple or to keep them more evenly lit. It also matters in macro photography where small changes in distance can dramatically alter exposure across a tiny subject.

Understanding falloff helps you decide how far to place a light from your subject, and how to position your subject within pools of natural light in a room.

The Inverse Square Law

The inverse square law is a simple physical rule that explains light falloff. It says that the intensity of light from a point source decreases with the square of the distance from the source.

In photography terms, if you double the distance from a small light source, the light reaching the subject does not become half as bright, it becomes much less.

Mathematically, if $I$ is light intensity and $d$ is distance from the source, then:

$$I \propto \frac{1}{d^2}$$

That means:

Key relationships:
If you double the distance from a point light source, the intensity becomes one quarter.
If you triple the distance, the intensity becomes one ninth.
More generally, if distance changes by a factor of $k$, intensity changes by a factor of $\frac{1}{k^2}$.

Here is how it looks in a simple table, starting from a distance of 1 unit with relative intensity of 1:

For photography, treat small lights like flashes or bulbs as point sources when subjects are not extremely close to the light. If your subject stands at 1 meter from a flash and the background is at 4 meters, the background gets only 1/16 of the light compared to the subject. This makes it much darker, which can be desirable.

If you move the light farther away from both subject and background, for example placing the flash 4 meters from the subject and the background at 7 meters, the relative difference in distance is smaller, so the brightness difference is also smaller. Subject and background appear closer in brightness.

In practice, this means that bringing a light very close to your subject creates both softer light and more dramatic falloff, which isolates the subject from the background. Moving the light farther away makes the light harder and reduces falloff, so the scene looks more evenly lit.

As you work with natural and artificial light, keep this simple law in mind. Distance is a powerful, often underestimated control for shaping how light behaves in your photographs.
