10.2. Night Photography

Camera Settings at Night

Night photography begins with accepting that light is scarce. You compensate by changing three things: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. At night, you usually need a wide aperture, a slow shutter, and a higher ISO than you would use in daylight.

If you use manual exposure, start with a simple baseline for a static night scene on a tripod. A common starting point is aperture around f/4, shutter speed around 5 to 15 seconds, and ISO 100 to 400. This keeps noise relatively low while allowing enough light to reach the sensor. For brighter scenes such as city centers, you may use shorter times, around 1 to 4 seconds, because there is more artificial light. For darker scenes such as unlit streets or countryside with a little ambient light, you may need 20 to 30 seconds.

Night baseline rule of thumb for static scenes on a tripod:
Start at $f/4$, $5$ to $15$ seconds, ISO 100–400, then adjust one setting at a time while watching your histogram.

Aperture at night is often between f/1.4 and f/5.6, depending on your lens and how much depth of field you need. Wide apertures such as f/1.4 or f/2 let in a lot of light, which helps with handheld shots, but depth of field becomes very shallow and some lenses are less sharp wide open. For cityscapes on a tripod, many photographers choose around f/5.6 to f/8 to balance sharpness and depth of field, then use longer shutter speeds instead of raising ISO too much.

Shutter speed depends on whether there is movement in your scene. For still scenes such as buildings and landscapes, long shutter speeds are helpful and cause no problem. For moving subjects such as people, cars, or water, long shutter speeds will create blur. Decide if you want that blur or if you want to freeze motion. If you want sharp people walking, you may need 1/60 second or faster, which may require a higher ISO or wider aperture.

ISO at night is almost always higher than daytime. On a tripod you can afford to keep ISO low, often 100 to 800, and accept longer shutter speeds. If you shoot handheld, ISO often climbs to 1600, 3200, or higher, especially indoors or in very dark streets. Modern cameras handle high ISO better than older ones, but you still need to watch for noise. A practical way to set ISO is to start at the lowest you think you can use, then increase it until you reach a shutter speed that avoids blur from subject movement and camera shake.

Night autofocus can struggle, because autofocus systems need contrast and light. Help your camera by using a single central focus point and focusing on a bright, high-contrast area. After focusing, you can lock focus or switch to manual focus so the camera does not refocus accidentally. In very dark conditions, use manual focus and magnify the live view to check sharpness on a bright object.

White balance at night is tricky because you often have mixed light sources such as sodium-vapor streetlights, LEDs, and shop signs. If you shoot RAW, use Auto White Balance and plan to fine-tune later. If you want more consistent results in JPEG, try a setting around 3200 K for typical city lighting, which often looks too orange at neutral settings. Check your LCD and adjust until the scene looks natural or matches the mood you want.

Finally, rely on your histogram more than the image preview. At night, the preview can make everything look bright and detailed, but the histogram shows if your exposure is actually correct. Aim to avoid large spikes pressed against the left edge, which indicate deep shadows with no detail, unless you intentionally want heavy silhouettes and black shadows.

Using a Tripod

A tripod is one of the most useful tools in night photography because it lets you use long shutter speeds without camera shake. This means you can keep ISO low for cleaner images and choose apertures for depth of field instead of just for brightness.

To get the most from your tripod, start by extending the thicker leg sections first. They are more stable than the thin ones at the bottom. If your tripod has a center column, keep it as low as possible. Raising the center column acts like a monopod on top of a tripod and increases vibration. Spread the legs wide enough to keep the camera stable, especially in wind.

Mount the camera securely and make sure the quick release plate is tight. Use a remote shutter release or the self-timer so you do not move the camera when you press the shutter. A 2-second delay is often enough. If your camera has a mirror, use mirror lock-up or Live View to reduce vibrations from mirror slap during long exposures.

In very dark areas while composing, it can be hard to see the scene through the viewfinder. Use the LCD and Live View if available, increase screen brightness temporarily, and raise ISO just for composing and focusing. Once you confirm your framing and focus, switch back to your intended ISO before shooting. You can also use a flashlight to illuminate a key part of the scene briefly to check focus and composition.

If there is wind or passing traffic, your tripod can still move slightly. Hang a bag from the tripod hook if it has one to add weight and stability, but keep the bag from swinging. In very windy conditions, lower your tripod and narrow its profile. Consider taking several frames and keeping the sharpest one.

With the camera on a tripod, turn off image stabilization on many lenses and bodies. Some stabilization systems can introduce small movements when they try to correct non-existent motion during long exposures. Some modern systems detect tripod use automatically, but if you are unsure and notice slight blur at long shutter speeds, test with stabilization off.

Finally, remember that a tripod slows you down. This can be good for careful composition and exposure, but if you are trying to react quickly to fleeting moments at night, be prepared to alternate between tripod and handheld shooting depending on your subject.

City Photography at Night

Cities at night are rich with lights, reflections, and color. The main challenge is balancing bright highlights like streetlights and signs against dark buildings and sky. You want to avoid blowing out the highlights entirely while still preserving some detail in the shadows.

A good starting exposure for a typical cityscape on a tripod might be around f/5.6 to f/8, ISO 100 to 200, and a shutter speed between 4 and 10 seconds. This gives enough depth of field and usually produces sharp details across the frame. Check your histogram. If the highlights are clipped on the right side, close down the aperture or shorten the shutter speed. If the scene looks too dark and the histogram is bunched far to the left, lengthen the shutter speed.

Different parts of a city scene have very different brightness levels. Shop signs and traffic lights are much brighter than building facades or dark streets. Decide what you want to prioritize. If the lights are important, expose so that their shapes and colors are visible without turning into pure white spots. If the buildings and streets matter more, you may let some lights clip slightly.

Streetlights, car headlights, and other point light sources can create starburst effects if you use a smaller aperture such as f/11 or f/16. This is a creative choice. Smaller apertures also require longer shutter speeds or higher ISO. Experiment by taking the same view with f/4 and f/11 to see the difference in star shapes and clarity.

Pay attention to reflections. Wet streets, glass windows, and water surfaces add interest and color. Often the best city night photos are shot just after sunset during blue hour, when there is still some color in the sky and the contrast between buildings and sky is less extreme. This helps maintain detail in both shadows and highlights and makes the city feel more three-dimensional.

Composition in city night photography benefits from strong structure. Use leading lines such as streets or bridges, and arrange light sources so that they guide the eye rather than distract from the main subject. Avoid letting large bright areas near the edges of the frame pull attention away from your subject. Slightly changing your viewpoint or zoom can exclude distracting lights or signs.

Finally, watch white balance carefully. Different types of lighting can create ugly color casts in parts of the scene. For example, some older streetlights produce very orange or green tones. Shooting in RAW helps because you can adjust white balance later for different parts of the image. During capture, choose a compromise white balance that keeps skin tones and key subjects reasonable, then refine in post-processing.

Light Trails

Light trails are created by using long shutter speeds while cars or other lights move through the frame. The camera records their paths as bright streaks. You need a stable tripod, a steady composition, and enough traffic or movement to draw interesting patterns.

A classic starting point for light trails at night is around f/8, ISO 100, and a shutter speed between 5 and 30 seconds. The exact time depends on how fast the traffic moves and how many vehicles pass through. In busy streets, 5 to 10 seconds can already fill the scene with trails. On quieter roads, you may need 20 to 30 seconds or even use Bulb mode for a custom duration.

Typical light trail baseline:

Choose a viewpoint where the cars enter and leave your frame in a pleasing way. Overpasses, high sidewalks, or corners that curve are excellent, because the trails can bend and lead toward your subject. Aim to include both headlights and taillights if possible. Headlights create white or bluish trails, taillights create red trails, and combining both adds color contrast.

Focus on a stationary object where the cars will pass, such as lane markings, a sign, or a section of guardrail. Use autofocus once, then switch to manual focus. This prevents the camera from hunting for focus in the dark. Check sharpness by reviewing a test shot at high magnification.

Exposure for light trails needs some trial and error. If the trails look too thin or faint, use a longer shutter speed or open the aperture slightly. If they appear too thick and bright, almost merging into solid bands of white, shorten the exposure or close the aperture. Also watch the surroundings. Buildings and sky can brighten during long exposures, especially in areas with light pollution. Adjust shutter speed so that the trails look strong but the background still has depth and detail.

You can also combine multiple exposures in editing. For example, you can shoot several 10-second frames from a tripod and then merge them later to create richer and denser light trails without overexposing the background. This technique is useful when traffic is light or inconsistent.

Experiment with other moving lights, not only cars. Bicycles with lights, illuminated boats, fairground rides, or even people holding small lights can create interesting trails. Just remember that any bright moving light will appear as a streak if the shutter is open long enough.

Long Exposures

Long exposure simply means using a long shutter speed, usually one second or longer, to capture motion and light over time. At night, long exposures help collect enough light and create creative effects such as smooth water, traffic trails, or blurred crowds. A tripod is almost always necessary.

There are two kinds of long exposures in night photography. The first type uses long shutter speeds mostly for brightness, for example, 10 seconds to expose a dark cityscape at ISO 100. The second type uses long shutter speeds mainly for artistic effects, such as 30 seconds or more to blur moving clouds or to smooth a fountain.

Many cameras limit standard shutter speeds to 30 seconds. To go beyond this, you use Bulb mode. In Bulb, the shutter stays open as long as you hold the shutter button, or until your remote release ends the exposure. Bulb is useful for very dark scenes, certain astrophotography techniques, or creative effects such as light painting.

Long exposures at night can overexpose bright areas even if the overall scene looks dark. Streetlights and illuminated signs can create halos or blow out completely. Balance your settings by first choosing an aperture for depth of field, then using the longest shutter speed that keeps key highlights under control. After that, adjust ISO as needed. Some scenes may need a smaller aperture such as f/11 to hold highlight detail, even if that means very long shutter times.

On very long exposures, especially several minutes, you may notice hot pixels or extra noise on the image. Many cameras offer Long Exposure Noise Reduction, which takes a second, dark exposure of the same duration and subtracts fixed noise and hot pixels. This can improve image quality but doubles your shooting time for each frame. Use it when you need cleaner files and when time is not critical.

Movement in long exposures creates different looks. Water becomes smooth and silky. People can disappear if they move through the frame quickly, which helps clean up busy areas. On the other hand, partially stationary people can become ghostlike. Try different shutter speeds to control the amount of blur. For example, 2 seconds might show recognizable shapes of moving people, while 20 seconds might erase them almost entirely.

Use a lens hood at night to reduce flare from bright lights that are just outside the frame. Flare can be more noticeable in long exposures because light accumulates on the sensor over time. Check your frame for stray light and adjust your position slightly if you see unwanted reflections or bright spots.

Handheld Low-Light Photography

Handheld low-light photography is useful when you do not have a tripod or when your subject is moving quickly and you need to stay mobile. The challenge is to keep the photo sharp enough while working in very little light.

To avoid camera shake when shooting handheld, you usually need to keep shutter speed fast enough based on your focal length. A common guideline is that your shutter speed should be at least the reciprocal of your full-frame equivalent focal length. For example, with a 50 mm lens, aim for at least 1/50 second. With stabilization, you can sometimes go slower, but this rule is a good starting point.

Minimum handheld rule:
Shutter speed $\geq \dfrac{1}{\text{equivalent focal length}}$.
Example: 50 mm lens, shutter speed of 1/50 second or faster.

Open your aperture as wide as your lens allows to let in more light. Apertures like f/1.4, f/1.8, or f/2.8 are very helpful in low light. Remember that depth of field becomes thinner, so accurate focus is important. Focus on the most important part of the subject, often the eyes in portraits.

Next, raise ISO until the shutter speed is fast enough to avoid camera shake and freeze the subject's motion. In handheld low light, it is usually better to accept some noise than to have a blurry photo. On many modern cameras, ISO 1600, 3200, or 6400 can still produce usable results if you expose correctly and plan to apply some noise reduction later.

Image stabilization in the lens or camera body helps a lot with handheld night shots, especially for static subjects. Turn stabilization on, and use a steady stance. Hold the camera close to your body, keep your elbows in, and gently press the shutter. Lean against a wall or rest the camera on a solid surface when possible to gain extra stability.

Autofocus may hunt in dim light, so help it by using a single, central focus point on a high-contrast area. If the camera still struggles, use manual focus with focus peaking or magnified view. Many cameras also offer an AF assist light for short distances, though this is less useful in large open spaces.

When photographing moving subjects, such as people walking, musicians at an indoor event, or street scenes, choose shutter speeds that are fast enough to freeze their motion, such as 1/125 or 1/250 second or faster. This often requires higher ISO and wide apertures, but it is necessary if you want clear, sharp subjects.

Finally, accept that handheld low-light images will often be grainier and less technically perfect than tripod-based long exposures. Focus on capturing the moment and mood. Grain can even contribute to the atmosphere of night scenes if exposure and composition are strong.

Noise Reduction

Noise in night photography appears as grainy texture and sometimes colored speckles, especially in shadow areas and at high ISO. There are two main sources of noise: high ISO sensor noise and noise from very long exposures. Both are common at night, but you have tools in camera and in editing to reduce their impact.

The first step in controlling noise is to avoid underexposure. Underexposed photos that are brightened later show much more noise than images that are exposed properly from the start, even at the same ISO. At night, it is easy to let the histogram sit too far left. Aim for an exposure where important midtones are not buried in deep shadows, even if the scene naturally contains a lot of dark areas.

Noise reduction can happen in two stages. In camera, you may have High ISO Noise Reduction and Long Exposure Noise Reduction settings. High ISO Noise Reduction mainly affects JPEGs, smoothing grain at the cost of some fine detail. Long Exposure Noise Reduction takes a second dark frame and subtracts fixed noise patterns. If you shoot RAW, high ISO noise reduction does not permanently affect the data, but Long Exposure Noise Reduction still doubles shooting time, which matters in cold weather or fast-changing scenes.

In editing software, you usually adjust two types of noise: luminance noise and color noise. Luminance noise looks like grain in brightness, similar to film grain. Color noise shows as colored specks or blotches. You often apply a moderate amount of color noise reduction to remove colored speckles, and a careful amount of luminance noise reduction to smooth grain while trying to keep edges and details crisp.

Key noise control guideline:
Expose as brightly as you can without clipping important highlights, even at high ISO, to minimize the need for extreme brightening later.

Sharpening and noise reduction interact. Strong sharpening can exaggerate noise, especially in shadows, while strong noise reduction can blur details and textures. Apply sharpening selectively to edges and important subjects, and keep noise reduction just strong enough to improve the overall look without making the image look smeared or plastic.

Finally, accept some noise as part of night photography. Viewers rarely examine your images at 100 percent magnification. Evaluate your results at the size they will be displayed. A moderate amount of fine-grained noise is often acceptable and can preserve more natural detail and texture than aggressive smoothing.
