Understanding ISO
ISO is one of the three pillars of exposure, together with aperture and shutter speed. It controls how sensitive your camera’s sensor is to light. A low ISO means low sensitivity and a high ISO means high sensitivity.
In digital cameras, ISO does not physically change the sensor. Instead, the camera amplifies the signal that the sensor records. At low ISO, there is little amplification. At high ISO, the camera boosts the signal so that a faint image becomes bright enough to see.
You will usually see ISO values like 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 and higher. Each step that doubles the ISO doubles the sensor’s sensitivity to light.
Key idea: Higher ISO = higher sensitivity = brighter image, but also more digital noise and less image quality.
On most cameras, the base ISO is the lowest native ISO setting, often ISO 100 or ISO 64. At base ISO your camera produces its cleanest images with the best dynamic range. As you move away from base ISO, you trade some image quality for more flexibility in low light or with fast shutter speeds.
ISO and Exposure
ISO is a full partner in the exposure triangle with aperture and shutter speed. If the light level stays the same, you can get the same brightness in your photo with many different combinations of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.
Whenever you double the ISO, you increase exposure by one stop. Whenever you cut the ISO in half, you decrease exposure by one stop. This is completely parallel to the way aperture and shutter speed work with stops.
Typical ISO stop sequence:

So, if a correct exposure is ISO 100, f/4, and 1/125 s, then using ISO 400 gives you two extra stops of sensitivity. To keep the same brightness, you must reduce exposure by two stops with aperture and shutter speed combined. For example, you could raise the shutter speed to 1/500 s while keeping f/4, or you could close the aperture to f/8 while keeping 1/125 s, or you could split the difference.
The relationship can be written as

where $t$ is the shutter time and $N$ is the f-number. If you double ISO and also double the shutter speed (make the time twice as long), you increase the exposure by two stops. If you double ISO but halve the shutter time, the exposure stays the same.
Rule: Doubling ISO = +1 stop of exposure. Halving ISO = −1 stop of exposure.
Thinking in stops lets you swap between ISO, aperture, and shutter speed depending on your creative needs, such as freezing motion or controlling depth of field.
ISO and Digital Noise
Digital noise is the grainy, speckled pattern that appears in an image, especially in the darker areas. Noise can also show as colored specks, often red, green, or blue. Noise becomes more visible as ISO increases.
When you raise ISO, you are not only amplifying the real signal from light, you also amplify the sensor’s electronic imperfections and random fluctuations. As a result, high-ISO photos look noisier and less clean.
There are two main types of noise you will notice:
Luminance noise looks like grainy texture, similar to film grain. It mainly affects brightness. It can sometimes even be aesthetically pleasing if it is not too strong.
Color noise appears as colored blotches or specks, especially in shadows and midtones. It usually looks more distracting and artificial than luminance noise.
Noise is more obvious if you zoom into your photos at 100 percent on a screen, and it becomes more noticeable when you brighten dark areas in editing. Also, smaller sensors usually show more noise at the same ISO than larger sensors, because each pixel is smaller and gathers fewer photons.
Besides noise, high ISO also reduces dynamic range. This means your camera cannot capture as much detail in very bright and very dark areas at the same time. Highlights may clip sooner and shadows may turn muddy and noisy when you try to brighten them.
Important trade-off: Higher ISO makes a brighter image but increases noise and reduces dynamic range. Use the lowest ISO that still lets you use the aperture and shutter speed you need.
Choosing the Correct ISO
Choosing ISO is always a balancing act between image quality and practical needs. In bright light, you can easily stay at base ISO and still achieve comfortable shutter speeds and any aperture you like. In low light or with fast action, you must decide how much noise you are willing to accept in exchange for a usable shutter speed and depth of field.
A simple way to think about it is to choose ISO last. Start with the creative settings that matter most. Pick your aperture for depth of field. Pick your shutter speed to freeze or blur motion. Then adjust ISO so that the exposure meter shows a correct exposure.
For example, if you are photographing a portrait outdoors in daylight, you might want shallow depth of field, so you choose f/2.8. You also want a shutter speed around 1/250 s to avoid camera shake and subject movement. With that combination, you may only need ISO 100 or 200. If the scene is darker, you raise ISO until the exposure is correct.
In low-light scenes, like indoors, you will reach a point where you cannot slow the shutter speed any further without blur, and you cannot open the aperture any wider. At that point, the only solution is to raise ISO, accept some extra noise, and get a sharp photo.
You can think in rough ranges:

These are only starting points. Modern cameras can often use very high ISO values with acceptable results, especially for web use or small prints.
If you care about maximum image quality, try to keep ISO as low as practical. However, a noisy sharp image is always better than a clean but blurry one. For moving subjects, freezing motion usually matters more than keeping ISO low.
Auto ISO
Auto ISO lets the camera choose the ISO automatically based on the brightness of the scene, while you control aperture and shutter speed, or at least one of them. This can greatly speed up shooting and helps you avoid underexposed or blurred images when light changes quickly.
Auto ISO is especially useful in modes like aperture priority or shutter priority. In aperture priority, you set the f-number and the camera chooses a shutter speed and ISO that create a correct exposure. In shutter priority, you set the shutter speed and the camera adjusts aperture and ISO within allowed limits.
Most cameras let you set three important Auto ISO parameters:
Minimum ISO is usually the base ISO. The camera starts at this value and raises ISO only when needed.
Maximum ISO is the highest ISO you are comfortable with. The camera never goes above this limit, so you control how much noise you are willing to accept.
Minimum shutter speed is crucial, particularly in aperture priority. You can tell the camera not to choose a shutter speed slower than a certain value, such as 1/125 s for general handholding or 1/500 s for sports. If the light gets too low, the camera will increase ISO instead of dropping below this shutter speed.
Some cameras offer an Auto minimum shutter speed, which bases the limit on your focal length, for example about 1 over the focal length in seconds. With a 50 mm lens, this gives 1/50 s or 1/60 s; with a 200 mm lens, about 1/200 s. This is intended to reduce camera shake.
Using Auto ISO well means setting your maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed thoughtfully. If the maximum ISO is too low, the camera may be forced into slower shutter speeds than you can handhold. If the maximum ISO is too high, your images may become noisier than you like even in conditions where you could have accepted a slower shutter or wider aperture.
High-ISO Photography
High-ISO photography is about working confidently in low light or with fast action when you must use large ISO values. With careful technique and realistic expectations, high-ISO images can still look excellent, especially for online sharing and small to medium prints.
Start by exposing as accurately as you can. Underexposed high-ISO images look particularly bad if you try to brighten them later, because lifting the exposure also lifts the noise. Try to avoid very dark exposures at high ISO unless you are intentionally doing that for a creative look.
Good exposure discipline helps. Use your exposure meter and histogram and avoid clipping important highlights. If your camera has an accurate histogram and you are comfortable with it, giving the exposure a slight bias to the right, without clipping, can reduce noise in shadows because more of the information is recorded away from the noisiest part of the sensor. However, do not overexpose and blow out highlights that matter.
You can also control the appearance of noise by how you present the image. At higher ISO, avoid excessively heavy cropping, because that enlarges the noise. Consider slightly smaller final image sizes for very high-ISO photos. Noise is less noticeable at normal viewing distances and sizes than when you inspect images at 100 percent magnification.
During editing, use noise reduction tools carefully. Luminance noise reduction can smooth grain but also removes fine detail if pushed too far. Color noise reduction usually helps a lot and can often be stronger without ruining the image. Aim for a realistic balance where noise is present but not distracting.
Composition and lighting also matter in high-ISO work. Scenes with good contrast and direction of light tend to look better even with some noise. Flat, low-contrast lighting combined with high ISO often looks muddy. When possible, move your subject nearer to a light source, such as a window or street lamp, so you can reduce ISO a bit while still getting a proper exposure.
Practical rule: Do not fear high ISO. It is better to raise ISO and get a sharp, correctly exposed photo than to keep ISO low and end up with a blurry or very underexposed image.
With modern cameras, high-ISO photography opens up many possibilities such as indoor events, concerts, night streets, and fast sports under artificial lights. Learning to handle ISO confidently allows you to shoot in almost any lighting situation you encounter.
