6.2. Flash Techniques

Direct Flash

Direct flash means pointing the flash straight at your subject and firing it without bouncing or modifying the light. It is the simplest way to use flash, and it is often what built-in flashes and basic on-camera flash use by default.

The main characteristic of direct flash is that the light travels almost straight from the flash head to the subject, which produces hard light and very defined shadows. Because the flash is close to the lens axis, shadows often fall directly behind the subject, and you may see a strong shadow on a wall or background. On-camera direct flash also tends to create flat lighting on faces and can produce red-eye when the flash is close to the lens and the subject looks directly at the camera.

Direct flash can look harsh and unflattering in many situations, especially indoors with nearby walls behind your subject. However, it is also very effective and sometimes necessary. In bright sunlight, direct flash can be used outdoors to lift deep shadows on faces. At events with dim light, it may be the only way to get a sharp image of fast-moving subjects when you cannot use a slower shutter speed. Direct flash is also useful when you need to overpower very bright ambient light at close distances, for example when photographing a person with a bright sky behind them.

To improve direct flash, you can make a few simple choices. Increase the size of the light source relative to the subject when possible, for example with a small diffuser on the flash or by moving the flash slightly off the camera with a bracket or off-camera cable. Avoid placing your subject directly in front of a wall if you do not want clear flash shadows. Step back a little and zoom in, which increases the distance between flash and subject, spreads the light more evenly, and slightly softens the effect. Reduce flash power when you only want a gentle lift to the subject rather than a full flash look.

When using direct flash, your exposure settings strongly influence how visible the background is. A fast shutter speed, low ISO, and moderate aperture will often darken the background and make the flash-lit subject stand out against a darker scene. A slower shutter speed, higher ISO, or wider aperture will allow more ambient light into the exposure so the background does not fall into black. Direct flash is a powerful starting point, and as you learn more techniques, it becomes a useful tool rather than something to avoid entirely.

Bounce Flash

Bounce flash is a technique where you aim the flash at a nearby large surface, such as a ceiling or wall, and let the light reflect onto your subject. Instead of the subject seeing the small flash head directly, they are lit by a much larger area of light, which makes the light softer and more flattering.

In practice, you tilt or swivel the flash head so it does not point at the subject. Indoors, a neutral-colored ceiling is often the easiest surface to use. The flash fires, the light hits the ceiling, spreads, and then falls on the subject from above. Because the effective light source becomes the large ceiling area, shadows are softer and transitions from light to dark on the face are smoother. The result often looks much more natural and similar to soft window light.

When bouncing, it is important to think about both direction and distance. The path from the flash to the ceiling and then down to your subject is longer than the direct path, so you need more flash power. You may need to increase ISO, open the aperture, or move your subject closer. You can also rotate the flash to bounce off a side wall. This creates more directional light that can model the face and create interesting shadows on one side, similar to portrait lighting patterns.

Color is also critical with bounce flash. The light will take on the color of the surface you bounce from. A white or light neutral surface keeps the light clean. A bright green, red, or yellow wall will add an obvious color cast to your subject. It is usually best to avoid colored walls and very dark surfaces, which absorb too much light.

If the ceiling is very high or dark, bounce flash may not be effective because too much light is lost on the way. In those cases, you can use a nearby wall, a reflector, or a small bounce card attached to the flash. A bounce card sends part of the light forward to fill shadows under the eyes and nose, while most of the light still bounces upward. This can help avoid deep eye sockets that sometimes occur when you only bounce from directly overhead.

Bounce flash is especially useful for indoor events, family gatherings, and portraits where you want a natural look but still need extra light. You still control ambient exposure with shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, but the bounced flash provides a soft key light that gives depth and dimension to your subject.

Fill Flash

Fill flash is when you use flash not as the main or only light, but to gently brighten shadows created by the existing ambient light. Instead of trying to overwhelm the ambient light, you add a controlled amount of flash to balance the overall exposure and reduce high contrast.

Outdoors in bright sunlight, faces often have harsh shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin. The background may be perfectly exposed at a base ISO and moderate aperture, but your subject’s face looks too dark. Fill flash is ideal in this situation. You meter for the ambient light so that the background and overall scene look correct. Then you add a low level of flash to lift shadow areas without making the subject look obviously flashed.

On many cameras, using TTL flash with negative flash exposure compensation is an easy way to create fill flash. For example, you might start with flash exposure compensation at minus 1 or minus 2 stops. The camera measures the scene and adds a small burst of flash that is weaker than the ambient exposure. You can then evaluate the result and adjust flash compensation up or down to get the amount of fill you like.

Fill flash is not only for sunshine. Indoors or at dusk, you can use it when the ambient light creates deep shadows you want to soften, or when a backlight behind the subject creates a silhouette. In these cases, you again expose for the ambient so that the background looks good, then add a low-power flash that brings the subject up without making the lighting look artificial.

When doing fill flash, it helps to think about your subject as the brightest important area in the frame but only slightly brighter than the background. If the flash exposure is too strong, the subject will look pasted onto a darker scene. If it is too weak, you will not see enough improvement in the shadows. You can balance this by changing flash power, distance, or using modifiers, and by checking your histogram and image preview.

A useful mental model is to imagine two separate exposures in the same frame. The ambient exposure is set by shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. The flash exposure is set by aperture, ISO, and flash power or flash exposure compensation. When doing fill, you keep the ambient exposure where you like it, then adjust the flash part only until the shadows feel natural. This mindset will become very important when you start mixing flash and ambient light more creatively.

Flash Sync Speed

Your camera uses a focal-plane shutter made of two curtains that move across the sensor. For most of the shutter speed range, the first curtain opens fully, exposing the entire sensor, and then the second curtain closes. The fastest shutter speed at which the entire sensor is fully open at once is called the flash sync speed, often written as $1/x$ second, such as $1/200$ or $1/250$.

At shutter speeds faster than the sync speed, the second curtain starts to close before the first curtain finishes opening. This creates a moving slit that travels across the sensor. A normal flash emits a very short, single burst of light. If the shutter is only a slit during that burst, part of the frame will be covered by the shutter and will record as a dark band.

Important rule: With normal flash (without high-speed sync), you must use a shutter speed at or below your camera’s maximum sync speed (for example, $1/200$ s or $1/250$ s) to avoid dark bands or partially lit frames.

Most modern cameras indicate the maximum sync speed in the manual and often mark it on the mode dial or in the viewfinder. When using flash in manual or shutter priority modes, you must keep the shutter at or below this limit unless you deliberately enable high-speed sync, which is a special mode described later.

Flash sync speed has important creative consequences when you try to control ambient light. Shutter speed affects the brightness of the ambient exposure from continuous sources, such as daylight or room lights, but it does not affect the brightness of the flash itself, as long as you stay at or below sync speed. If you want to darken a bright background while using flash, you may quickly reach the sync speed limit. At that point you cannot simply use a faster shutter speed unless you change the way the flash fires.

For example, if you photograph a person outdoors at midday and want to both use flash and keep the background from overexposing, you might need a shutter speed of $1/1000$ second without flash. Since the normal sync speed might only be $1/200$ second, you either need to reduce the ambient brightness with a smaller aperture or lower ISO, accept a brighter background, use high-speed sync, or cut light with a neutral density filter.

Understanding your sync speed helps you diagnose problems such as black bands at the edges of flash photos and guides you in choosing flash modes and camera settings when mixing flash and ambient light.

High-Speed Sync

High-speed sync, often abbreviated as HSS, is a special flash mode that allows you to use shutter speeds faster than your camera’s normal sync speed without creating dark bands. It works by changing how the flash emits light. Instead of a single short burst, the flash pulses rapidly throughout the entire time the shutter slit travels across the sensor. This way, each part of the sensor receives light as the slit passes.

With HSS enabled, you can shoot at shutter speeds like $1/1000$ s or $1/4000$ s with flash and get an evenly lit frame. This is especially useful outdoors in bright light when you want a wide aperture for shallow depth of field, or when you need a fast shutter to freeze motion while still using flash. The camera and flash communicate to coordinate this pulsed output as soon as you set a shutter speed faster than the sync limit.

There is a significant trade-off. High-speed sync greatly reduces the effective power and range of your flash. Because the flash is essentially firing many small bursts instead of a single full-strength burst, the total light reaching the subject is lower. As you increase shutter speed further, the amount of light from the flash continues to drop because the slit opening becomes narrower, and the flash must spread its energy across the entire exposure time.

Key point: High-speed sync lets you exceed your camera’s sync speed, but it costs you flash power. The faster the shutter speed above sync, the less effective reach the flash has.

In practice, this means that HSS is excellent for close subjects, such as portraits at wide apertures in bright daylight, but less suitable when you need to light subjects at a distance. You might find that at $1/4000$ s the flash barely affects the exposure of a subject several meters away, even at full power.

To use HSS, both your camera and flash must support it, and it usually needs to be enabled on the flash or in the camera menu. Once active, as you dial past the normal sync speed, the flash will switch to pulsed output automatically. When you return to slower shutter speeds, it goes back to normal single-pulse operation.

When planning a shoot, decide whether you truly need HSS. If your goal is shallow depth of field in strong sunlight, HSS is very useful. If you mainly want to overpower bright ambient light from a distance, you might be better served by working at or below sync speed and using a narrower aperture, lower ISO, or neutral density filters to control ambient brightness while keeping flash power as strong as possible.

Balancing Flash and Ambient Light

Balancing flash and ambient light is one of the most important skills in practical flash photography. Instead of letting the flash completely dominate the scene, you decide how much of the existing light you want to keep and how much the flash should contribute. This gives your photos a more natural and three-dimensional look.

A useful way to think about this is to separate the exposure into two parts within a single image. The ambient exposure is controlled by shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. The flash exposure is mainly controlled by aperture, ISO, and flash power or flash exposure compensation. Shutter speed has little or no effect on the brightness of the flash-lit subject, as long as you stay at or below sync speed, but it does affect the brightness of the ambient background.

Guiding principle: At or below sync speed, adjust shutter speed to change ambient brightness, and adjust flash power or flash exposure compensation (with aperture and ISO) to change the brightness of the flash-lit subject.

In practice, one simple approach is to start by setting the ambient exposure without flash. Decide how bright you want the environment or background to appear. You might underexpose the ambient slightly, perhaps by one stop, so that the scene looks a bit dark without flash. Then you turn on the flash and adjust its power or flash exposure compensation until your subject is correctly exposed. The flash becomes the main light on the subject, and the ambient provides context and background detail.

By changing shutter speed, you can raise or lower the contribution of ambient light while leaving the flash-lit subject almost unchanged. A slower shutter lets in more ambient light and brightens the background and any motion trails from moving lights. A faster shutter darkens the ambient surroundings and can create a more dramatic, isolated look for the subject. This technique is sometimes called dragging the shutter when you deliberately use a slow shutter speed with flash in low light to blend sharp flash exposure on the subject with blurred ambient movement.

Aperture and ISO affect both ambient and flash exposures at the same time. Opening the aperture or raising ISO will make both ambient and flash brighter. To keep the ambient where you want it, you can compensate by adjusting shutter speed, and then fine-tune the flash power to bring the subject back into the desired range. Over time, this balancing act becomes intuitive. You will think in terms of two dials, one for ambient and one for flash, and you will turn them independently to shape the look of the scene.

Balancing flash and ambient also involves matching qualities of light, not just brightness. If the ambient light is warm at sunset, you can warm the flash with a gel so that the color temperature matches and the transition between flash-lit subject and background feels natural. If the ambient is very soft, such as on an overcast day, you can soften your flash with bounce or a diffuser so it does not look obviously harder or more directional than the surrounding light.

Ultimately, controlling the relationship between flash and ambient light lets you decide how the viewer experiences a scene. You can create subtle fill that is almost invisible, a crisp subject against a moody background, or dynamic images that show both sharp subjects and ambient motion. All of these come from the same core understanding of how your exposure settings interact with flash output.
