15.3 Photoshop Compositing

Combining Images

Compositing is the process of taking elements from different photos and building a single, believable image. At a basic level you are always doing three things: choosing compatible source images, cutting elements out, and placing them convincingly into a new scene.

A good composite starts before Photoshop. Source images should have similar perspectives, focal lengths, and general lighting direction. A person shot with a wide‑angle lens from above will never sit naturally in a background shot with a long lens from waist height. Try to match camera height, angle of view, and subject scale as closely as possible.

Open your background image first and treat it as your base. Then open a source image that contains the subject or object you want to add. Use the Move Tool to drag the subject layer into the background document. This creates a new layer above the background.

Once the layer is in place, roughly transform it with Edit > Free Transform so the scale feels consistent. Do not worry about perfection yet, just align horizon lines and eye levels so the subject does not feel too big or small. Keep an eye on relative sizes of familiar objects, like doors, cars, or people, to judge scale.

At this stage, your composite will look obviously fake because of hard edges and mismatched tones. The next steps, precise selections, masks, and adjustments, refine the composite until the new element belongs in the scene.

Advanced Selections

Selections define which parts of a layer will show in the final composite. For realistic results, selections must be accurate along complex edges like hair, foliage, or fur, not just around simple shapes.

Start with the fastest selection tool that fits the subject. The Object Selection Tool or the Select Subject command can usually give an instant rough selection around a person, animal, or clear object. Use this as a base, not as a final cutout.

Refine the selection using tools like the Lasso and Polygonal Lasso to add or subtract areas. Hold Shift to add to the selection and Alt or Option to subtract. Zoom in and work around contours in short strokes instead of trying to cut a whole side in one go.

For precise control, go to Select and Mask. In this workspace, you can see the selection over different previews like on black or on white, which helps you judge edge quality. Use the Refine Edge Brush around hair, fur, and semi‑transparent edges. Paint lightly and let Photoshop detect fine strands while avoiding halos.

For geometric subjects such as buildings, cars, or products, the Pen Tool can create extremely clean selections. Convert the path to a selection when you are done. The Pen Tool takes practice, but it is ideal when you need straight lines and smooth curves.

Remember that a selection only defines a boundary. You will almost never keep a hard selection forever. Instead, turn selections into masks and refine edges non destructively.

Layer Masks

Layer masks are the core of realistic compositing. A mask controls the visibility of a layer with shades of gray. White areas of the mask reveal the layer, black areas hide it, and gray values partially hide it.

Once you have a selection, click the Add Layer Mask icon in the Layers panel. Photoshop converts the selection into a mask. Where the selection existed, the mask is white and the subject is visible. Everything outside becomes black and disappears.

The main advantage of masks is that they are editable. Select the mask thumbnail and paint with a Brush set to black to hide parts of the layer. Paint with white to bring parts back. Lower brush opacity to create soft transitions. Always use a soft edged brush along most natural edges to avoid hard cutout lines, except where an object truly has a razor sharp edge.

For tricky edges like hair, the mask created by Select and Mask is just a starting point. Zoom in and paint on the mask to remove any halos or leftover background color. You can view the mask alone with Alt or Option plus a click on the mask thumbnail. This reveals if there are stray gray areas where you expected full white or full black.

Sometimes you will need several masks on different layers to build up a composite. For example, one layer for the subject body, another for hair refinements, and yet another for shadows or reflections. Keep masks organized and named so you can return to fix details later.

Important: Never erase parts of a composited layer. Always hide and reveal using layer masks so every change remains reversible.

Blending Modes

Blending modes control how one layer interacts visually with layers beneath it. Instead of simply stacking one solid image on another, blending modes allow you to mix brightness and color in specific ways that are very useful for compositing.

The most commonly used modes in compositing are Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Soft Light, and Color. Multiply darkens, which is ideal for adding shadows, dark textures, or reflections on lighter surfaces. Screen brightens, which helps when adding light flares or brightening elements without affecting darker parts too aggressively.

Overlay and Soft Light increase contrast and can help merge textures or add subtle shading. For example, you can place a gentle cloud texture over a sky and set the blending mode to Soft Light to enrich the sky without clearly showing the texture pattern. Color mode changes the color information of a layer while keeping the underlying brightness. This is helpful when matching color casts across elements.

Blending modes become especially powerful when combined with masks and reduced opacity. Instead of painting solid black shadows, you can duplicate your subject layer, fill it with black, blur it, and set the blending mode to Multiply or Normal with lowered opacity. This creates a more natural shadow that still interacts with the background.

Experiment with blending modes by cycling through them while a layer is selected and see which mode best accomplishes your goal. Even subtle changes, such as using Soft Light with low opacity for vignettes or light adjustments, can gently integrate elements.

Matching Color and Light

Once edges are clean and the subject is in place, the biggest giveaway of a fake composite is mismatched color and light. You must align brightness, contrast, direction, and color temperature between layers so everything feels like part of the same environment.

Start by evaluating direction and quality of light. If the background light comes from the left and slightly above, make sure the subject has a similar lighting pattern. If it does not, sometimes you can flip the subject horizontally. Other times, you may need to create fake shadows and highlights using Curves adjustment layers clipped to the subject.

Use adjustment layers such as Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, and Color Balance. Clip them to the subject so they only affect that layer. Adjust overall brightness to match how light or dark other objects in the scene appear. Then match contrast so the subject does not look flatter or harsher than the surroundings.

Color temperature must also match. If the background has a warm, golden tone, a subject shot under cool fluorescent light will feel out of place. Use Color Balance or a Curves adjustment to warm or cool the subject. Look at neutrals such as white shirts or gray objects; they should be similar in color cast across the composite.

Local adjustments often help. For example, the side of the subject facing away from the light source should be slightly darker and cooler in color. You can paint on a Curves or Hue/Saturation mask with a soft brush to darken or cool those areas. This helps the subject respond to the environment rather than appear pasted on top.

Key rule: Always match brightness first, then contrast, then color temperature, and finally local shadows and highlights. Adjusting in this order keeps changes controlled and believable.

Creating Realistic Composites

Realistic compositing is about consistency. Every element in the image must follow the same visual rules of perspective, light, color, focus, and atmosphere. If one of these is wrong, the viewer may not know why, but the image will feel artificial.

Perspective and scale are foundational. Horizon lines across background and subject must align. If the camera looked up at a tall building in the background, the subject should also be seen from below, not from eye level. When possible, use grid overlays or guides to check that verticals and horizontals of different elements agree.

Depth of field must also match. If the background is very blurred, a sharply focused subject placed far away will feel wrong. You can simulate depth of field by applying a blur effect to distant elements. Use gradient masks so blur increases with distance, similar to how real lenses behave.

Shadows anchor objects to the ground. There are generally two types in composites: contact shadows and cast shadows. Contact shadows are the small, very dark shadows where the subject touches a surface. Cast shadows extend outward away from the light source. Both need to match the direction and softness of existing shadows in the scene. Softer shadows occur in diffuse light, such as overcast days, and harder shadows in strong direct light.

Atmospheric effects help unify a scene. In landscapes or city scenes, distant objects are often lower in contrast and slightly bluer or hazier. If you place a subject into this distance, reduce their contrast and increase atmospheric haze using low opacity white or pale blue on a layer set to Soft Light or Normal. For indoor scenes, subtle color casts from walls or windows may tint subjects. Add gentle colored overlays to mimic this.

Finally, step back and evaluate the composite as a whole. Flip the canvas horizontally to see it with fresh eyes. Look for edge halos, inconsistent sharpness, mismatched noise levels, or irregular color patches. Often it helps to merge a copy of all layers into a temporary top layer and apply a gentle finishing adjustment like a faint overall color grade or vignette. This global treatment ties the pieces together.

Guiding principle: A composite looks realistic only when perspective, scale, focus, light, shadows, and color all feel like they belong to one single photograph.
