Masks
Masks in Lightroom let you apply edits only to specific parts of a photo instead of the whole image. They turn global adjustments into targeted, local corrections. In an advanced workflow, masks become the main tool for shaping light, contrast, and color in a precise and repeatable way.
Lightroom offers several types of masks, such as Brush, Linear Gradient, Radial Gradient, and AI powered Subject, Sky, and Background masks. Each type is created in the Masks panel, then refined with options like Add and Subtract to build complex shapes.
A typical advanced approach starts with broad, simple masks, then moves toward more detailed ones. For example, you might first create a Sky mask to darken and add saturation to the sky, then add a Linear Gradient to the foreground for more contrast, and finally use a Brush mask to brighten a subject’s face. Thinking in this layered way lets you “sculpt” a photo.
Lightroom’s AI masks, such as Select Subject and Select Sky, are especially powerful for speeding up work. Instead of carefully brushing around a person or horizon, you can have Lightroom create an automatic selection, then refine it with the Add/Subtract options if necessary.

Presets
Presets are saved sets of adjustments that you can apply to photos with a single click. In an advanced workflow, they are tools for consistency and speed, not magic finishing buttons. You can create presets for full “looks” and also for small, specific tasks.
A full look preset might include basic exposure, contrast, color grading, and tone curve settings that give your work a recognizable style. A task preset might only adjust clarity and dehaze for landscapes, or only apply a certain vignette. Separating creative looks from technical presets lets you mix and match more flexibly.
When building your own presets, start with a photo that represents a typical situation you shoot. Adjust it carefully, then in the Preset creation dialog, choose which settings to include. Avoid including settings that are image specific. For example, you usually do not want to include crop, spot removal, local masks, or white balance in a general style preset, because these often need to be tailored per image.
A useful way to organize presets is to group them by purpose. You might create folders for “Base Corrections,” “Color Styles,” “Black and White,” and “Finishing Touches.” This reduces the temptation to click through random presets and instead encourages a structured approach.
You can also create camera specific presets, particularly for RAW files. These can standardize your starting point for each camera by setting a preferred profile, noise reduction, sharpening, and lens corrections.
Rule: Treat presets as starting points, not final results. Always refine exposure, white balance, and local adjustments after applying any preset.
Batch Editing
Batch editing allows you to apply changes to multiple photos at once. This is essential when you return from a shoot with hundreds of images from similar lighting and conditions. Instead of editing each photo individually, you edit a representative image and then apply those settings to the rest.
The basic approach is to fully edit one “hero” image in a sequence. Once you are satisfied, you select related images and apply the same settings through options such as “Sync,” “Previous,” or “Copy/Paste Settings.” Batch editing is most effective when the set of photos shares similar exposure and lighting, such as a portrait session, a wedding ceremony scene, or a series of landscape shots from the same moment.
You can also use batch editing combined with camera and lens specific defaults. For example, you might rely on automatic lens corrections and a standard amount of noise reduction for all photos from a particular camera, then use batch adjustments only for the creative part.
Advanced batch editing often involves using presets and masks together. You might apply a base preset to an entire shoot, then batch adjust white balance for groups of images taken under the same light, and only after that fine tune individual images with masks.
Key idea: Batch editing speeds up the repetitive work. Use it for consistent settings across similar images, then reserve individual fine tuning for your strongest selects.
Synchronizing Adjustments
Synchronizing adjustments is the precise method by which you transfer edits from one image to others. While batch editing describes the idea, synchronization is the specific tool and process that makes it accurate and controllable.
When you sync adjustments, Lightroom presents a list of all possible settings. You can choose exactly what to sync, such as Basic Tone, Tone Curve, HSL, Detail, and Lens Corrections. You generally exclude settings like Crop, Local Adjustments, Spot Removal, and Transform, especially when your images have different compositions.
For example, after fully editing one photo from a portrait sequence, you might select a set of similar frames and synchronize only exposure, contrast, tone curve, color grading, noise reduction, and lens corrections. Each image then receives the same style, while you keep the freedom to crop and retouch individually.
A useful refinement is to synchronize masks that stay aligned across a sequence, such as sky masks in a fixed tripod landscape series. However, in moving, hand held, or portrait sequences, masks usually need manual adjustment, so they are often excluded from synchronization.
If you change your mind after syncing, you do not need to undo everything. Simply re sync with a different selection of checkboxes, or adjust individual photos as needed. Synchronization is non-destructive and can be updated many times.
Rule: Before syncing, carefully choose which settings to include. Syncing crops or spot removals across dissimilar frames is one of the fastest ways to create extra work.
Virtual Copies
Virtual copies let you create multiple versions of a photo without duplicating the original file. Each virtual copy stores only metadata about your edits, so it takes almost no extra disk space. This makes them ideal for exploring different looks and outputs from the same image.
A typical use is to create both a color and a black and white version. You can edit your main version, then create a virtual copy and convert it to black and white, adjusting tones separately while both versions remain linked to the same original file.
Virtual copies are also useful when a client or personal project requires different crops, such as one version for Instagram, another for a print, and another for a website banner. Each virtual copy can have its own crop, sharpening, and export settings while staying grouped in the catalog.
In a more advanced workflow, you can use virtual copies to compare creative ideas. For instance, you might duplicate an image three times and apply a different preset or color grade to each copy. Viewing them side by side in the compare or survey view helps you refine your style choices before committing.
To keep order, rename virtual copies and put them in appropriate collections. Avoid creating large numbers of unnamed copies; they can clutter your catalog and make it harder to know which version is final.
Important: A virtual copy is not a second file. Deleting the original from your catalog or disk affects all virtual copies that rely on it.
Collections
Collections are Lightroom’s powerful way to organize photos independently of their physical folder locations. They free you from relying only on your operating system’s folders and let you group images by project, theme, or purpose.
A basic collection is simply a list of images you choose. A smart collection is dynamic; it updates automatically based on rules you define, such as star rating, keywords, or camera used. Both types can be nested in collection sets to create a structured hierarchy.
For example, you might create a collection set called “Portfolio,” with collections like “Portraits,” “Landscapes,” and “Travel,” and within each, build smart collections such as “5-star selects” or “To Print.” This lets you pull together your best work across many drives and folders without moving files on disk.
Collections are also central to Lightroom’s integration with cloud and mobile features. Syncing a collection makes it available on your phone or tablet. This is especially helpful in an advanced workflow where you want to flag or rate images away from your main computer and have those updates appear back in your primary catalog.
Project based collections are particularly effective. For each assignment or personal project, create a collection or collection set, add all relevant photos, and then create sub collections for “Selects,” “Client Picks,” or “To Edit.” This keeps your workflow organized at the project level while your folder structure remains stable.
Guideline: Folders show where your photos live on disk. Collections show how you actually use them. Do not reorganize folders for creative or project based grouping; use collections instead.
Building an Efficient Workflow
An efficient Lightroom workflow is a repeatable sequence from import to export that minimizes decision fatigue and wasted time. Advanced techniques like masks, presets, batch editing, synchronization, virtual copies, and collections fit into this larger structure.
A practical high level sequence might be: import and apply basic metadata and a camera default or base preset, cull and rate photos, perform global edits on a representative image, synchronize and batch apply those edits to similar images, then refine with masks and local adjustments on your final selects. After that, create virtual copies for alternate versions, place key images into collections for projects or portfolios, and finally export according to your intended output.
Presets can automate many steps. You might use an import preset that applies lens corrections, a camera profile, and basic noise reduction. Then you can use different creative presets as starting points for specific projects. Collections keep your progress organized, so you always know which images are still in progress and which are finished.
Masks and local adjustments should usually come after broad corrections. This top down approach ensures that your detailed work is built on a solid global foundation. If you change major settings like exposure or white balance later, you avoid having to redo many local edits.
Virtual copies and collections support iteration. Instead of flattening all decisions into a single version, you can keep multiple paths open and still maintain a tidy catalog. For example, a wedding shoot might have a collection for “Client Proofs” and another for “Portfolio Picks,” with virtual copies inside each for alternate crops and tones.
The key to efficiency is consistency. Develop a sequence of steps that fits your type of photography and refine it, rather than starting from zero each time. As you repeat the same well designed workflow, Lightroom’s advanced tools become faster and more natural to use, letting you spend more energy on creative choices and less on technical management.
