4.6. White Balance

Color Temperature

Light is not just bright or dim, it also has a color. This is called color temperature. Our eyes adapt so quickly that a white shirt looks white whether you are indoors under orange lamps or outside under blue sky. A camera is not that clever by default. It records the actual color of the light that illuminates the scene.

Color temperature describes how “warm” or “cool” a light source looks. Warm light appears more orange or yellow, cool light appears more blue. In photography, this is treated as a technical property that you can control, not just a creative mood.

Typical light sources have characteristic color temperatures. Candlelight looks very warm and orange. Midday sunlight looks fairly neutral. Shade or blue sky can look quite cool and blue. When your camera’s white balance is not set correctly for the light source, the entire photo can have a strong color cast. Skin may turn orange or green, snow may look blue or gray, and interiors may look yellow and dirty.

White balance is the camera setting that corrects for this, so that neutral objects like white paper or gray clothes appear neutral in the photo. Once you understand color temperature, you can either aim for natural looking color or deliberately keep a slight warm or cool cast as a stylistic choice.

Important: Color temperature affects the overall color mood of your image. White balance is the control that tells the camera how to interpret that temperature so whites and grays appear neutral if you want them to.

Kelvin

Color temperature is measured in units called Kelvin, written with the letter K. The Kelvin scale you see in photography is a simplified version of a scientific concept, but you only need the practical side.

In photography, lower Kelvin values are visually warmer, higher values are visually cooler:

This can feel backwards at first. In physics a higher Kelvin is a “hotter” light source, but to our eyes that higher Kelvin often looks cooler and bluer. When you set a higher Kelvin in your camera, the camera will add warmth to counteract the cool light. When you set a lower Kelvin, the camera will add blue to counteract warm light.

Imagine you shoot in very warm tungsten light around 3000 K. If you set your white balance to around 3000 K, the camera knows “this light is warm, so I must cool it down a bit” so that white and gray objects look neutral. If you instead chose a daylight setting of around 5500 K in that same room, you would get an extremely orange image.

In most cameras, switching from preset white balance icons to a numeric “K” option lets you dial in a specific Kelvin value. This is useful when the light is consistent, for example in a studio or under fixed LED panels.

White Balance Presets

To avoid thinking about numbers, cameras offer white balance presets. Each preset assumes a typical Kelvin range and corrects the color for you. Names and icons vary a little between brands, but the idea is the same.

Presets do not “set” the light. They tell the camera how to correct for it. If you choose a “Shade” preset, the camera assumes the light is cool, so it warms the photo. If you choose “Tungsten,” the camera assumes the light is very warm, so it adds blue and reduces orange.

Using presets is a practical approach when you are starting out. In direct sun, choose Daylight. Under tungsten bulbs, choose Tungsten. In open shade, choose Shade. This gets you close to natural color without needing to think about Kelvin numbers.

Presets also help you keep a consistent look. If you are shooting a whole portrait session outdoors under similar light, choose a specific preset and stick with it. All your images will share the same base color balance, which makes editing easier and more consistent later.

Auto White Balance

Auto White Balance, usually labeled AWB, is the camera’s attempt to think for you. It analyzes the scene and tries to decide what should be neutral, then shifts the colors accordingly. For many situations, especially in daylight, Auto WB works quite well.

However, AWB has some clear limitations. It often tries to make the average of the scene neutral. In warm sunset light, it may neutralize too much of the warmth, killing the golden feeling you wanted to capture. In a very cool blue hour scene, it may remove the attractive blue cast. If your scene is dominated by one color, for example a green forest or a red wall, AWB can also be confused and produce strange results.

AWB can also be inconsistent from one frame to the next, even if the light has not changed. Small changes in your composition can cause the camera to choose a slightly different white balance, which leads to a sequence of images that do not match in color.

For general snapshots and quick shooting, AWB is usually fine, especially if you shoot RAW and can correct it later. For more controlled photography such as portraits, product work, or a long series in one location, it is often better to choose a preset or a custom setting, then keep it fixed so you get reliable, repeatable color.

Custom White Balance

Custom white balance gives you the most precise control in camera. Instead of guessing the color temperature, you show the camera what “neutral” looks like under the actual light and it builds a setting from that.

The typical method uses a white or neutral gray reference card. The process varies by brand, but usually looks like this:

First, place a neutral card in the same light as your subject. It must be lit by exactly the same lamps or daylight, not from a different direction or window. Fill the frame with the card and take a reference photo that is correctly exposed.

Second, in your camera’s menu, choose “Custom WB” or “Preset manual WB,” select the reference photo, and confirm. The camera reads the color of the card and creates a custom white balance setting from it.

Third, activate that custom setting as your white balance. Every shot you now take in that same light should show neutral whites and accurate colors.

This is especially helpful when the light is unusual or mixed, such as in gyms, event halls, or under custom LED panels. It is also useful when accurate product color is important, for example clothing, artwork, or food packaging.

If your camera does not offer a full custom process, you can still use the Kelvin setting and adjust by eye. Take a test shot, review it on the LCD, then raise or lower the K value until whites and grays look correct. This is less exact than using a neutral card, but can work well with practice.

Tint

White balance correction has two main dimensions. Color temperature runs along a blue to orange axis. Tint runs along a green to magenta axis. Many real world light sources do not only differ in temperature, they also have a green or magenta bias.

Common examples include certain fluorescent tubes or cheap LED lights that push green, or some studio lights that lean slightly magenta. If you adjust only the temperature, whites may still look a bit sickly or strange.

In camera, advanced white balance controls and in editing software, you often see two sliders: Temperature (blue to orange) and Tint (green to magenta). Together they let you place your neutral point anywhere on a two dimensional color grid.

Use temperature first to get the overall warmth or coolness right, then use tint to remove green or magenta casts. If a white shirt looks slightly green, move tint toward magenta. If it looks too pink or purple, move tint toward green.

Many white balance presets include a default tint value along with temperature. Custom white balance based on a neutral card also corrects both dimensions. When you shoot RAW, adjusting tint in post production becomes very flexible, because the white balance is not baked into the file.

Key idea: White balance is not just blue versus orange. It is also green versus magenta. Use both temperature and tint to achieve truly neutral color when you want it.

Correcting Color Casts

A color cast happens when the entire image is shifted toward one color. This might be an unwanted orange from tungsten bulbs, a greenish feel from fluorescent lights, or blue snow in shade. Sometimes a color cast is a creative choice, but other times it makes skin tones and important details look wrong.

To correct a color cast in camera, begin by matching your white balance to the light. Use a suitable preset, set a Kelvin value that is close to the actual light, or create a custom white balance with a neutral card. Take a test shot and review critical areas such as skin, whites, and grays. Adjust temperature and tint until those areas look natural.

When you shoot under mixed lighting, for example daylight from a window plus tungsten ceiling lamps, you can run into more complex casts. Parts of the frame may be lit by warm bulbs, others by cool daylight. In this case, no single global setting will make everything perfectly neutral. You can try to minimize the problem on location by switching off some lights, closing curtains, or using gels on flash or lamps so their color matches the ambient light more closely.

If you shoot RAW, you can correct white balance extensively in post processing. Most editors include an eyedropper tool for white balance. Click it on something that should be neutral gray or white, and the software adjusts temperature and tint automatically. You can then fine tune by eye. For difficult images, use local adjustments to correct different areas separately, for example warming only the subject while leaving a cool blue background.

Always judge color casts against something that should be neutral or against familiar colors, especially skin. Human skin is a very sensitive indicator. If a person looks too orange, too red, too green, or too gray, the white balance is probably off. By comparing how your image looks to how the scene felt to your eyes, you can decide whether to correct completely or keep some of the cast for mood.

With practice, you will start to recognize common casts and know how to address them quickly, either by choosing the right white balance before you shoot or by making efficient corrections during editing.
