9.5. Interior Photography

Choosing a Lens

Interior spaces are usually tight, so your main concern is fitting enough of the scene into the frame without distorting it too much. This is where lens choice becomes critical.

For most interiors, a wide angle lens is the starting point. On a full frame camera, lenses in the 14–24 mm range are considered ultra wide, and 24–35 mm are moderate wide angles. On an APS-C camera, you get a similar field of view with roughly 10–16 mm for ultra wide and 16–24 mm for moderate wide. A moderate wide angle is often the sweet spot for interiors because it feels spacious but still believable.

Ultra wide lenses make rooms look larger and can capture an entire small room in one frame. However, they also exaggerate perspective. Objects near the camera appear much larger than objects a little farther away, so furniture can look stretched and walls can appear to lean. Use the widest focal lengths with care and usually only when you cannot step back any farther.

Whenever possible, avoid extremely wide focal lengths for detail shots and more intimate views. A standard lens, around 35–50 mm on full frame, keeps proportions natural and is excellent for vignettes, such as a bedside table or a corner with a chair and lamp. These tighter compositions often feel more inviting and can show materials and styling clearly.

Zoom lenses are very convenient for interiors because you can fine tune your framing without moving your tripod in cramped rooms. A common choice for full frame is a 16–35 mm or 17–40 mm zoom. On APS-C, look for something like 10–22 mm or 12–24 mm. If you use prime lenses, a two lens kit such as 24 mm and 35 or 50 mm on full frame gives you both wide views and natural looking details.

Interior photography rewards lenses with minimal distortion. Even a small amount of barrel distortion can bend straight walls and door frames. Many modern lenses are corrected by in-camera or software profiles, but starting with a relatively well-corrected lens makes your life easier. If your lens has noticeable distortion, plan to correct it in post processing and leave a little extra room in the frame to crop the edges afterward.

A large maximum aperture is less important indoors than in other genres because you will often work at f/8 or f/11 on a tripod. Sharpness across the frame and low distortion matter more than extreme background blur. Image stabilization is useful if you need to shoot some handheld images in low light, but for careful, professional looking results, a tripod is usually a bigger priority than stabilization.

Working in Small Spaces

Small rooms present two main problems. Space is tight, and clutter becomes very obvious. Before you set up your camera, walk the room and declutter. Remove loose cables, trash bins, personal items on counters, and anything visually messy that does not add to the story of the space. Straighten pillows, align chairs, and tidy curtains. Interiors look much better when they feel intentional.

Because you may not be able to stand far from your subject, camera position matters more than usual. Height is especially important. A common choice is to place the camera at about chest height or slightly above the height of key furniture such as sofas and tables. This gives a natural perspective and reduces distortion of vertical lines. In very small spaces like bathrooms, you may need to go a bit higher to see over fixtures.

Try different positions within the limits of the room. A slight move left or right can change how furniture overlaps and can hide or reveal distracting elements. Corners are useful because they let you show two walls and give a sense of depth, but do not always default to corners. Sometimes shooting straight into a wall from the center of the room creates a calmer, more symmetrical image.

Use doors and adjacent rooms to your advantage. You can stand in a hallway and shoot through a doorway into a small room. Opening doors can extend your shooting position and show connections between spaces. Just make sure door edges do not slice awkwardly through important elements in the frame. Often, you either show a door fully open or keep it mostly out of the frame.

Mirrors are common in small spaces and can easily show you, the tripod, or clutter behind the camera. Check every reflective surface before you shoot. If you see your reflection or unwanted objects, adjust the angle of the camera, change your position slightly, or re-angle mirrors if possible. In very small bathrooms, you might need to lower the camera, tilt it slightly, and correct the tilt later in editing to avoid being seen.

Because small rooms can feel cramped, think about capturing a mix of wider establishing shots and tighter detail shots. The wide shots show the entire layout; the tighter images show textures, materials, or a cozy corner. This gives a more complete impression of the space without relying only on extreme wide angles that might misrepresent it.

Interior Composition

Composition in interior photography focuses on clarity, order, and a true sense of space. The viewer should immediately understand how the room is arranged and what makes it appealing. Start with your subject. In each photo, decide what you are really showing: the overall living room, a dining table, a fireplace, or an interesting architectural feature. Then arrange the frame so that subject is given priority.

Lines are your strongest compositional tools indoors. Floors, ceilings, walls, door frames, and windows all create strong lines. Aim to keep vertical lines in the building truly vertical in your image. This usually means keeping the camera as level as possible and minimizing tilt. Horizontal lines such as shelves and countertops should feel level too, unless you deliberately choose a creative angle.

Leading lines work very well in interiors. Hallways, rows of chairs, kitchen counters, and beams can guide the viewer’s eye toward a focal point such as a window view or a statement piece of furniture. Place important lines so they lead into the frame rather than out of it. If a line runs directly out of a corner of the image, it often feels more intentional than if it exits at a random point on the edge.

Many interior photographs use symmetry or near symmetry. Facing a bed straight on, showing a centered dining table, or aligning a corridor down the middle of the frame can create a calm, structured image. When you use symmetry, take time to align the camera carefully with the center of the subject. Small misalignments are very noticeable with this style.

Balance is another key idea. Because furniture and decor have visual weight, think about how that weight is distributed in the frame. A heavy sofa on one side can be balanced by a cluster of lighter elements on the other side, such as a lamp, a plant, or art on the wall. Avoid having everything important crammed into one corner while the rest of the frame is empty or filled with dead space.

Foreground elements can add depth. Shooting past a chair back, a plant, or a doorway frame can make the viewer feel like they are inside the space, not just looking at a flat diagram of it. Keep foregrounds slightly out of focus if they are not the subject, but do not let them block key features.

Pay attention to edges and corners of the frame. Cut objects, half visible light fixtures, or slivers of door frames can be distracting. Either include an element cleanly or exclude it. This might mean small adjustments in camera position or slight changes in zoom. Take the time to refine until the frame feels tidy and intentional.

Finally, consider how many light sources are in the shot. Table lamps, ceiling fixtures, and windows all act as bright visual anchors. Decide which ones you want to show, turn off those that create ugly color casts or hotspots, and compose so that the chosen light sources support the mood rather than dominating the frame.

Mixed Lighting

Interiors almost always contain mixed lighting: daylight from windows, warm light from tungsten bulbs, cooler LED or fluorescent fixtures, and sometimes colored lights from decorative elements. These different light sources have different color temperatures, so parts of the scene may look warm and others cool in the same photo.

The most effective approach is to simplify the lighting as much as you reasonably can. If daylight is attractive and bright enough, consider turning off some or all interior lights and relying mainly on window light. This often produces clean, neutral colors and soft shadows that flatter most rooms. You can still turn on a few practical lights such as lamps for atmosphere as long as they do not dominate the exposure.

If you must keep artificial lights on, try to make them as consistent as possible. For example, replace a single very orange bulb with a balanced LED to match others, or turn off one fixture that has clearly different color. In kitchens and offices, under-cabinet lights and overhead fixtures often differ in color. Decide which set is more flattering and turn the others off if they create ugly color bands.

You can also use the camera’s white balance to manage mixed lighting, but remember that a single white balance setting cannot make every source look perfect at once. Often, it is best to set white balance for the dominant light. For a room that is mostly lit by windows, set a daylight white balance. In a room with no window light and only warm bulbs, set a tungsten or warm white balance. Some smaller color differences can then be corrected in post processing.

When mixed lighting is strong, plan to correct color locally in editing. You can use local white balance adjustments on problem areas, such as a corner lit by a particularly orange lamp. To make these adjustments easier later, aim to avoid extreme exposures; do not blow out lamp shades or crush dark corners, since you will need detail in those regions to adjust color.

If you use flash indoors, you introduce another light source. To avoid harshly cool flash mixed with warm ambient, you can add a warming gel to your flash to better match interior lights, then set your white balance for the interior lighting. This approach belongs in more advanced lighting discussions, but it is useful to know that you can adapt one source to another rather than accept a clash of colors.

Important rule: Try to reduce mixed lighting by either turning some sources off or matching their color, then set white balance for the dominant remaining light. Do not rely on a single global white balance to fix wildly different light sources.

Exposure Bracketing

Interiors often combine bright windows and dark corners, which can exceed the dynamic range your camera can capture in a single exposure. Exposure bracketing is a technique used to handle this. You take several images of the same composition at different exposure values, usually from darker to brighter, and later blend or select from them.

Most cameras provide an automatic bracketing function, often called AEB or exposure bracketing. You choose how many frames to shoot, typically three or five, and how far apart in exposure they should be, for example in 1 or 2 stop increments. The camera then captures a sequence each time you press the shutter or hold it down, depending on settings.

For interiors, a common pattern is a three image bracket, one at the metered exposure, one underexposed, and one overexposed. For scenes with very bright windows or very dark interiors, you might use five or seven shots to fully cover the range. The goal is to have at least one frame where the highlights in the windows are preserved, and one where the shadows in the interior are bright enough to show detail.

Because the images must align perfectly for blending, use a tripod. Set your composition, lock focus, and avoid touching the camera during the bracket sequence. A remote release or using the camera’s self timer or continuous shooting can help reduce camera movement.

Bracketing works best when you shoot in aperture priority or manual mode and keep aperture and ISO constant. Let the shutter speed change between frames. This maintains consistent depth of field and noise, which are important for seamless blending later. In manual mode, you adjust shutter speed for each frame, or let the automatic bracketing do it for you once you set the pattern.

Even if you do not plan to create HDR blends, bracketing can act as insurance in tricky light. If time allows, you can bracket and later choose the single best exposure from the sequence when blending is not needed. Over time you will learn when one well judged exposure is enough and when bracketing is worth the extra effort.

Key principle: In interior scenes with bright windows and dark corners, use exposure bracketing to capture detail across the full brightness range, keeping aperture and ISO fixed and varying only shutter speed.

HDR Interiors

High dynamic range, or HDR, techniques are often used in interior photography to deal with extreme differences between bright and dark areas, especially around windows and bright fixtures. In an HDR workflow, you capture bracketed exposures and then combine them with software to create a single image that contains detail in both highlights and shadows.

The most important goal in HDR interiors is a natural look. Overprocessed HDR can produce crunchy textures, bizarre colors, and glowing halos around high contrast edges such as window frames or furniture against bright backgrounds. For interiors, this usually looks artificial and unappealing.

When you blend exposures, you generally want the interior to look bright and inviting, but not flat. Maintain some contrast, especially in corners and under furniture, so that the room still feels three dimensional. Avoid lifting shadows so much that the image loses depth. Similarly, keep windows believable. If every detail outside the window is as bright and clear as the interior, the result may look unrealistic, like a collage.

Most editing software offers both automated HDR merge functions and manual blending options. Automated HDR merge is convenient. It aligns bracketed files, combines them, and outputs a new high dynamic range file that you can edit. For interiors, start with modest HDR strength or default settings. If there are controls for highlight compression or local contrast, use them carefully. Move sliders gradually and check for halos around windows and bright objects.

Manual blending, using masks or gradients to paint in brighter or darker exposures, gives more control. For example, you might use the base exposure for most of the room, a darker exposure for the windows, and a brighter exposure for deep shadows. This takes more time but can produce cleaner results with fewer artifacts.

Pay attention to color when blending. Different exposures can show slightly different white balance or color saturation, especially around bright windows. If the software lets you choose a reference image for color, pick the one that looks most natural. After merging, fine tune overall white balance and then adjust specific areas with local color tools.

HDR also increases the risk of revealing dust spots on your sensor and small alignment errors. Zoom into the image at 100% to check skies outside windows and large areas of flat color like painted walls. Remove dust spots and watch for ghosting if anything moved between exposures, such as curtains in a breeze or tree branches outside.

Guideline: Use HDR to gently extend dynamic range, not to create an obviously processed effect. Preserve a natural balance of light and shadow, and avoid halos and extreme local contrast.

Window Exposure

Windows are both a light source and a compositional element in interior photography. They add brightness, connect the interior to the outside world, and often act as focal points. The main technical challenge is their brightness relative to the room.

There are three common strategies for handling windows. The first is to expose for the interior and let the windows blow out partially or completely. This can be acceptable if the outside view is not important and the blown out area is not too large or harsh. In this case, you adjust exposure so that furniture, walls, and decor look good. Slightly clipped highlights in small window areas are not necessarily a problem.

The second strategy is to balance interior and window brigthness through exposure bracketing and blending. Here, you capture one or more darker exposures that retain detail in the window areas, then combine them with brighter exposures that show the interior clearly. This approach works well when the view outside is part of the story, such as a cityscape or garden.

The third strategy is to control the physical light difference. Sheer curtains, blinds, or netting can soften bright windows and reduce contrast. On overcast days, window brightness is naturally lower and often easier to manage. If you have control over timing, photographing interiors when the outside light is softer, such as early morning or late afternoon, makes window exposure much easier.

When composing, think about how much of the window you include. A large bright area that occupies a big portion of the frame will dominate attention. If the view outside is not attractive, frame the window so that it is present but not central, or angle the camera so that only part of the window shows. You can also stand closer to interior features and let the window move toward the edge of the frame to reduce its visual weight.

Reflections on glass are another consideration. In some cases, reflections of interior elements in the window add depth and context. In other cases, they can be distracting. Adjusting your shooting angle slightly or turning off bright lights that reflect strongly in the glass can help. A polarizing filter may reduce some reflections, but it can also unevenly darken parts of the sky outside, so use it cautiously.

For night interiors with visible windows, you may face bright specular highlights from streetlights or illuminated signs. These can easily blow out. You usually accept some clipping in these small light sources, but try to avoid letting them bloom excessively. A slightly shorter exposure for the window area, combined with blending, can keep bright lights contained while still showing the interior warmly lit.

Practical rule: Decide early whether the window view matters. If it does, plan your exposure and possible bracketing around preserving that view. If it does not, prioritize a clean, well lit interior and allow limited highlight clipping in the windows.
