These pronouns answer the question "Wem?" – To whom?
Many verbs use the dative without a direct object (like helfen or danken).
Watch out for word order: the dative pronoun usually comes before the accusative noun:
Ich gebe ihm das Buch. (not “das Buch ihm”)
