4.5. Present Tense Conjugation Patterns

Present Tense Conjugation Patterns

In this chapter you will see how present tense forms are built in Georgian, and how to recognize some very common patterns. We will not cover every verb class in detail, only the most useful and regular types for beginners and some very frequent irregularities.

The Idea of Verb โ€œSeriesโ€ and the Present

Georgian verbs have a complex system, but for now you only need one key idea:

For beginners: when you see present tense forms in this course, think of them as belonging to the โ€œpresent series,โ€ usually marked by a vowel before the person ending, like $a$, $e$, or $i$.

The present tense forms you meet most often will look like:

Example, verb v-khed-av โ€œI seeโ€:

So: แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ• vkhedav โ€œI see.โ€

You will see this pattern again and again, with different roots.

Personal Endings in the Present

Focus on the endings that come at the very end of the present tense verb. These are extremely important.

For many active present tense forms you can start with this simple pattern:

PersonEnglishVery common ending (present series)Example (root khed โ€œseeโ€)
1st sgI-$v$แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ• vkhedav
2nd sgyou-$x$ / -$kh$แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒฎ khedakh
3rd sghe/sheno ending or -$s$แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒก / แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒก khedavs / khedas*
1st plwe-$t$แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ— vkhedat
2nd plyou pl-$t$แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ— khedat
3rd plthey-$en$แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ”แƒœ khedaven

You will meet both โ€œshortโ€ and โ€œlongerโ€ variants in real Georgian. For beginners, focus on these three that are most visible:

Key present endings to notice

  • -แƒ• โ€œIโ€
  • -แƒฎ โ€œyou (sg)โ€
  • -แƒ— โ€œwe / you (pl)โ€

You will often guess the subject just from this ending.

Subject Markers Before the Root

In many present tense verbs you also have a subject prefix before the root.

Common ones in active verbs:

PersonEnglishCommon subject prefixExample with root khed โ€œseeโ€
1st sgIแƒ•- v-แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ• vkhedav โ€œI seeโ€
2nd sgyounothing (often)แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ• khedav โ€œyou seeโ€
3rd sghe/shenothing (often)แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒก khedavs โ€œhe/she seesโ€
1st plweแƒ•- v-แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ— vkhedavt โ€œwe seeโ€
2nd plyou plnothingแƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ— khedavt โ€œyou (pl) seeโ€
3rd pltheynothingแƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ”แƒœ khedaven โ€œthey seeโ€

So in many verbs you can recognize:

Together they make the person very clear.

A Very Common Pattern: Root + -av

Many everyday action verbs in the present tense show this pattern with the series vowel -a- and an ending:

For some verbs, the combination with the root gives a clear -av or -ev form in the 1st person.

Example 1: *khedav-* โ€œto seeโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•vkhedavI see
2 sgแƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•khedavyou see
3 sgแƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒกkhedavshe / she sees
1 plแƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ—vkhedavtwe see
2 plแƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ—khedavtyou (pl) see
3 plแƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ”แƒœkhedaventhey see

Example 2: *tsโ€™er-* โ€œto writeโ€ (present root often *tsโ€™er*)

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒฌแƒ”แƒ vtsโ€™erI write
2 sgแƒฌแƒ”แƒ tsโ€™eryou write
3 sgแƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒกtsโ€™ershe / she writes
1 plแƒ•แƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒ—vtsโ€™ertwe write
2 plแƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒ—tsโ€™ertyou (pl) write
3 plแƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒ”แƒœtsโ€™erenthey write

Notice that some verbs, like vtsโ€™er, do not have a clear -av/-ev in the present tense, but the endings are still similar: -v, -s, -t, -en.

Example 3: *itโ€™sโ€™av-* โ€œto study, to learnโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒกแƒฌแƒแƒ•แƒšแƒแƒ‘vstsvlobI study / learn
2 sgแƒกแƒฌแƒแƒ•แƒšแƒแƒ‘stsvlobyou study / learn
3 sgแƒกแƒฌแƒแƒ•แƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒกstsvlobshe / she studies
1 plแƒ•แƒกแƒฌแƒแƒ•แƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒ—vstsvlobtwe study
2 plแƒกแƒฌแƒแƒ•แƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒ—stsvlobtyou (pl) study
3 plแƒกแƒฌแƒแƒ•แƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒ”แƒœstsvlobenthey study

The spellings are complicated, but you can still see the personal endings -v, -s, -t, -en.

Pattern with -eb- in the Present

Many verbs have -eb- in the present series forms. A lot of verbs with -eb- form their present like this:

Example: *minda* type verbs, *vtsxovrob* etc.

Look at tsxovr- โ€œto live, to reside,โ€ which often shows up as vtsxovrob in the 1 sg:

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘vtsxovrobI live
2 sgแƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘tsxovrobyou live
3 sgแƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒกtsxovrobshe / she lives
1 plแƒ•แƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒ—vtsxovrobtwe live
2 plแƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒ—tsxovrobtyou (pl) live
3 plแƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒ”แƒœtsxovrobenthey live

You still see: แƒ•- for โ€œI, we,โ€ and endings -v, -s, -t, -en.

Another verb with -ob- / -eb-: mushaob- โ€œto workโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘vmushaobI work
2 sgแƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘mushaobyou work
3 sgแƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒกmushaobshe / she works
1 plแƒ•แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒ—vmushaobtwe work
2 plแƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒ—mushaobtyou (pl) work
3 plแƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒ”แƒœmushaobenthey work

Again the same endings pattern.

The Verb โ€œTo Doโ€ as a Model: *aketebs*

The verb aketebs โ€œdoes, makesโ€ is extremely common and helps you see -eb- clearly.

Present series of aketeb- โ€œto do, to makeโ€:

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒแƒ™แƒ”แƒ—แƒ”แƒ‘vaketebI do / make
2 sgแƒแƒ™แƒ”แƒ—แƒ”แƒ‘aketebyou do / make
3 sgแƒแƒ™แƒ”แƒ—แƒ”แƒ‘แƒกaketebshe / she does / makes
1 plแƒ•แƒแƒ™แƒ”แƒ—แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ—vaketebtwe do / make
2 plแƒแƒ™แƒ”แƒ—แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ—aketebtyou (pl) do / make
3 plแƒแƒ™แƒ”แƒ—แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ”แƒœaketebenthey do / make

This pattern, root + -eb- + ending, repeats in many verbs.

The Present of โ€œTo Haveโ€ as a Pattern

You already saw to have in its own chapter, but its pattern is special and useful.

Singular of gaqvs โ€œhasโ€:

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ›แƒแƒฅแƒ•แƒกmakvsI have
2 sgแƒ’แƒแƒฅแƒ•แƒกgakvsyou have
3 sgแƒแƒฅแƒ•แƒกakvshe / she has

Plural:

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 plแƒ’แƒ•แƒแƒฅแƒ•แƒกgvakvswe have
2 plแƒ’แƒแƒฅแƒ•แƒ—gakvtyou (pl) have
3 plแƒแƒฅแƒ•แƒ—akvtthey have

Here the subject is marked by a prefix:

The endings here are not the same as with verbs like vdekhi or vtsโ€™er, so this is a different pattern you must memorize. It is common with verbs where the thing possessed is actually the โ€œsubjectโ€ grammatically, but for now simply remember the forms.

The Present of โ€œTo Beโ€ as a Unique Pattern

โ€œTo beโ€ in Georgian has very special forms. You saw the basic forms already. Here we look at them as a pattern.

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒแƒ varI am
2 sgแƒฎแƒแƒ kharyou are
3 sgแƒแƒ แƒ˜แƒกarishe / she / it is
1 plแƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ—vartwe are
2 plแƒฎแƒแƒ แƒ—khartyou (pl) are
3 plแƒแƒ แƒ˜แƒแƒœarianthey are

Important things about this pattern:

So, even if โ€œto beโ€ is irregular, it still shares some person signals with other verbs, especially the plural -แƒ—.

Present Tense of Common Motion Verbs

Some common motion verbs also show helpful patterns, even if they are more irregular. Here is a brief look, without full explanation of their system.

Verb *modis* โ€œcomesโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒ“แƒ˜แƒ•แƒแƒ movdivarI am coming
2 sgแƒ›แƒแƒ“แƒ˜แƒฎแƒแƒ modikharyou are coming
3 sgแƒ›แƒแƒ“แƒ˜แƒกmodishe / she comes / is coming
1 plแƒ›แƒแƒ•แƒ“แƒ˜แƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ—movdivartwe are coming
2 plแƒ›แƒแƒ“แƒ˜แƒฎแƒแƒ แƒ—modikhartyou (pl) are coming
3 plแƒ›แƒแƒ“แƒ˜แƒแƒœmodianthey come / are coming

Note the endings -แƒ•แƒแƒ , -แƒฎแƒแƒ , -แƒก, -แƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ—, -แƒฎแƒแƒ แƒ—, -แƒ˜แƒแƒœ. Some of these look closer to โ€œto be,โ€ because this is a continuous type form.

Verb *midis* โ€œgoesโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ›แƒ˜แƒ•แƒ“แƒ˜แƒ•แƒแƒ mivdivarI am going
2 sgแƒ›แƒ˜แƒ“แƒ˜แƒฎแƒแƒ midikharyou are going
3 sgแƒ›แƒ˜แƒ“แƒ˜แƒกmidishe / she goes / is going
1 plแƒ›แƒ˜แƒ•แƒ“แƒ˜แƒ•แƒแƒ แƒ—mivdivartwe are going
2 plแƒ›แƒ˜แƒ“แƒ˜แƒฎแƒแƒ แƒ—midikhartyou (pl) are going
3 plแƒ›แƒ˜แƒ“แƒ˜แƒแƒœmidianthey go / are going

For now, simply notice that the 3rd singular has a simple ending -แƒก: แƒ›แƒแƒ“แƒ˜แƒก, แƒ›แƒ˜แƒ“แƒ˜แƒก.

Present Tense with Objects: Basic โ€œv-โ€ฆ-sโ€ Pattern

Many verbs with a direct object in the present show this useful pattern:

Pattern idea for many present tense transitive verbs:

  • 1 sg often: แƒ•- + root + -แƒ˜ / -แƒ + -แƒก
  • This often means โ€œI [do something] it / him / her.โ€

Examples:

Verb *kvirav-* โ€œto buyโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒงแƒ˜แƒ“แƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘vyidulobI buy (it)
2 sgแƒงแƒ˜แƒ“แƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘yidulobyou buy
3 sgแƒงแƒ˜แƒ“แƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒกyidulobshe / she buys

Verb *vtsโ€™er* with an object

The main present tense pattern stays the same. The object is in the noun phrase, not in the verb ending at this level of description.

Typical Present Patterns: Mini Summary

You will meet many special cases later, but for now you can recognize these very common shapes:

  1. แƒ•-ROOT-แƒ/-แƒ”/-แƒ˜-แƒ• for โ€œI โ€ฆโ€
    • แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•, แƒ•แƒฌแƒ”แƒ , แƒ•แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘, แƒ•แƒชแƒฎแƒแƒ•แƒ แƒแƒ‘
  2. ROOT-แƒ/-แƒ”/-แƒ˜-แƒฎ for โ€œyou (sg) โ€ฆโ€
    • แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•, แƒฌแƒ”แƒ , แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘
  3. ROOT-แƒ/-แƒ”/-แƒ˜-แƒก for โ€œhe / she โ€ฆโ€
    • แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒก, แƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒก, แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒก
  4. แƒ•-ROOT-แƒ/-แƒ”/-แƒ˜-แƒ— for โ€œwe โ€ฆโ€
    • แƒ•แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ—, แƒ•แƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒ—, แƒ•แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒ—
  5. ROOT-แƒ/-แƒ”/-แƒ˜-แƒ— for โ€œyou (pl) โ€ฆโ€
    • แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ—, แƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒ—, แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒ—
  6. ROOT-แƒ/-แƒ”/-แƒ˜-แƒ”แƒœ for โ€œthey โ€ฆโ€
    • แƒฎแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒ•แƒ”แƒœ, แƒฌแƒ”แƒ แƒ”แƒœ, แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒ”แƒœ

If you see a verb starting with แƒ• and ending in -แƒ•, it is very likely a 1st person singular present of an active verb:

Practice Examples with Common Roots

Here are a few more common verbs in the present, collected for you to see the patterns.

Verb *kitxul-* โ€œto readโ€

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒ™แƒ˜แƒ—แƒฎแƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘vkitxulobI read / am reading
2 sgแƒ™แƒ˜แƒ—แƒฎแƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘kitxulobyou read
3 sgแƒ™แƒ˜แƒ—แƒฎแƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒกkitxulobshe / she reads
1 plแƒ•แƒ™แƒ˜แƒ—แƒฎแƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒ—vkitxulobtwe read
2 plแƒ™แƒ˜แƒ—แƒฎแƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒ—kitxulobtyou (pl) read
3 plแƒ™แƒ˜แƒ—แƒฎแƒฃแƒšแƒแƒ‘แƒ”แƒœkitxulobenthey read

Verb *saobrob-* โ€œto talk, speakโ€

2 plแƒกแƒแƒฃแƒ‘แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒ—saubrobtyou (pl) speak / talk
3 plแƒกแƒแƒฃแƒ‘แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒ”แƒœsaubrobenthey speak / talk

Verb *chโ€™am-* โ€œto eatโ€ (present *vcham*)

PersonFormTransliterationMeaning
1 sgแƒ•แƒญแƒแƒ›vchโ€™amI eat
2 sgแƒญแƒแƒ›chโ€™amyou eat
3 sgแƒญแƒแƒ›แƒกchโ€™amshe / she eats
1 plแƒ•แƒญแƒแƒ›แƒ—vchโ€™amtwe eat
2 plแƒญแƒแƒ›แƒ—chโ€™amtyou (pl) eat
3 plแƒญแƒแƒ›แƒ”แƒœchโ€™amenthey eat

Again, 1 sg has แƒ•- and ends in a consonant, 2 sg often has no prefix, 3 sg has -แƒก, plurals usually end in -แƒ— or -แƒ”แƒœ.
