6 Everyday Vocabulary and Phrases

Overview

In this part of the course you meet words and expressions that you can use right away in simple everyday situations. We will not go deep into grammar. The goal is to give you a first “toolbox” of very common Georgian words and short, ready made phrases that you can recognize and start using.

Whenever you see Georgian words below, they are written in the modern Georgian script (Mkhedruli) followed by a simple Latin‑letter pronunciation guide in parentheses.

Example:
გამარჯობა (gamarjoba) means “hello.”

Throughout this chapter, you will see short sample sentences that combine several of these items. Do not worry if you do not fully understand the grammar yet. Focus on recognizing words and getting used to how they look and sound.

Very Common Everyday Words

Some words appear in many simple sentences. Learning them early will help you understand a lot of basic Georgian.

Examples:

• დიახ, კარგი. (diakh, kargi.)
  “Yes, OK.”
• დღეს აქ ვარ. (dghes ak var.)
  “Today I am here.”
• მე მეგობართან ვარ. (me megobartan var.)
  “I am with a friend.”

Useful Polite Particles and Fillers

Even without full sentences, a few small polite words help you sound friendly and respectful.

Short exchanges:

• უკაცრავად, მადლობა. (uk’atsravad, madloba.)
  “Excuse me, thank you.”
• ბოდიში, არ ვიცი. (bodishi, ar vitsi.)
  “Sorry, I do not know.”
• კარგი, გთხოვ. (kargi, gt’khov.)
  “OK, please.”

Everyday “Small Talk” Words

These words help you react and keep a simple conversation going.

Examples:

• მართლა? ძალიან კარგი.ideaა. (martla? dzalian kargi ideaa.)
  “Really? It is a very good idea.”
• არაა პრობლემა. (araa problema.)
  “No problem.”
• მეც აქ ვარ. (mets ak var.)
  “I am here too.”

Everyday Places Around You

Here are some words for common places you might mention in simple talk.

Mini patterns:

• სახლში ვარ. (sakhlshi var.)
  “I am at home.”
• კაფეში ვარ მეგობართან. (k’apeshi var megobartan.)
  “I am at a café with a friend.”
• ბაზარში ბევრი ადამიანი არის. (bazarshi bevri adamiani aris.)
  “There are many people at the market.”

Everyday Objects and Things

These words help you point, ask, and talk about simple objects around you.

Simple combination examples:

• ტელეფონი მაქვს. (teleponi makvs.)
  “I have a phone.”
• წყალი მინდა. (ts’q’ali minda.)
  “I want water.”
• ეს ჩემი წიგნია. (es chemi ts’ignia.)
  “This is my book.”

Everyday Describing Words

You will see many adjectives later with grammar, but here are a few very common describing words you can already recognize.

Mini phrases:

• დიდი ქალაქია. (didi kalakia.)
  “It is a big city.”
• ძალიან გემრიელი ყავაა. (dzalian gemrieli q’avaa.)
  “The coffee is very tasty.”
• ძალიან ძვირია. (dzalian dzviria.)
  “It is very expensive.”

Everyday Time and Routine Words

You will study numbers and dates later. Here, just get used to some very frequent time words for simple talk about daily life.

Example uses:

• დღეს სახლში ვარ. (dghes sakhlshi var.)
  “Today I am at home.”
• ხშირად კაფეში ვარ. (khshirad k’apeshi var.)
  “I am often at a café.”
• ხვალ უნივერსიტეტში ვარ. (khval universitetshi var.)
  “Tomorrow I am at the university.”

Common Ready‑Made Short Phrases

Here are some short, very useful whole expressions that you can already memorize and use. Do not worry now about how the verbs are formed. That will come later in the course.

Short dialogue using some phrases from this chapter:

A: შენ როგორ ხარ? (shen rogor khar?)
“How are you?”
B: მე კარგად ვარ, მადლობა. შენ? (me kargad var, madloba. shen?)
“I am fine, thanks. And you?”
A: მეც კარგად ვარ. (mets kargad var.)
“I am fine too.”

Everyday Combinations You Can Practice

Now combine vocabulary from different sections into short, simple sentences and mini exchanges. Do not worry about perfection, just practice.

Some model patterns:

1. [Today / Tomorrow] + I am at [place].
• დღეს ოფისში ვარ. (dghes ofisshi var.)
  “Today I am at the office.”
• ხვალ სკოლაში ვარ. (khval skolashi var.)
  “Tomorrow I am at school.”
2. I want + [food or drink].
• წყალი მინდა, გთხოვ. (ts’q’ali minda, gt’khov.)
  “I want water, please.”
• ყავა მინდა. (q’ava minda.)
  “I want coffee.”
3. This is + [adjective] + [noun].
• ეს დიდი წიგნია. (es didi ts’ignia.)
  “This is a big book.”
• ეს ძალიან გემრიელი პურია. (es dzalian gemrieli puria.)
  “This is very tasty bread.”
4. Short reaction pairs:
• A: ძვირია. (dzviria.)
  “It is expensive.”
  B: მართლა? (martla?)
  “Really?”
• A: პრობლემა არის? (problema aris?)
  “Is there a problem?”
  B: არაა პრობლემა. (araa problema.)
  “No problem.”

Use these simple combinations to start “playing” with Georgian in your own life, even before you fully study the verbs and grammar.
