Communicating in Everyday Georgian Situations

In this chapter you will see how the pieces you have learned start to work together in real life. We will look at typical situations, present short model phrases and mini dialogues, and highlight patterns that you can reuse. Later chapters will give you the grammar and vocabulary in more detail. Here the focus is on survival communication, not on full explanations of forms.

Each subsection introduces useful expressions that you will meet again in the child chapters of this unit. Try to read them aloud, notice repeated words, and pay attention to how short, flexible patterns are used across different contexts.

Core Survival Phrases for Everyday Use

Before going into specific situations, it is helpful to have a small toolkit of phrases you can adapt everywhere.

Getting attention and starting an exchange

You can use these almost anywhere, whether at a shop, on a bus, or in an office.

Mini examples:

• Bodishi, tu sheidzleba, sad aris shaurma?
  ბოდიში, თუ შეიძლება, სად არის შაურმა?
  "Excuse me please, where is the shawarma place?"
• Gamarjoba, didi madloba.
  გამარჯობა, დიდი მადლობა.
  "Hello, thank you very much."

Saying you do or do not understand

You will need these often as a beginner.

Mini examples:

• Bodishi, ver gavige. Gtxovt, gaimeoret nela.

  "Sorry, I did not understand. Please repeat slowly."
• Anglurat laparakobt?

Typical Situation Patterns

This section shows general patterns that will appear in all everyday situations. Details about money, transport, restaurants, and so on will come in the following chapters. Here you learn the shared skeleton.

Asking for something

A very flexible pattern is:

• "Please, [give / show / tell] + object."

Important verbs will be developed later, but the communicative idea is simple: you request something politely.

Common short requests:

You can use the same structure in a shop, taxi, café, or pharmacy by changing only the object word.

Mini examples:

• erti es, tu sheidzleba.
  ერთი ეს, თუ შეიძლება.
  "One of this, please."
• ts’q’ali da qava, tu sheidzleba.
  წყალი და ყავა, თუ შეიძლება.
  "Water and coffee, please."

Asking where something is

Location questions will be central in the "Asking for Directions and Using Transport" chapter, but the core pattern is already useful:

• "Where is + place?"

Key question word: sad "where".

Mini examples:

• Bodishi, sad aris tualeti?
  ბოდიში, სად არის ტუალეტი?
  "Excuse me, where is the toilet?"
• Sad aris banki?
  სად არის ბანკი?
  "Where is the bank?"

Asking how much

Talking about money and prices is important in many situations: shopping, cafés, transport. Here is the core pattern, details about numbers will be in the "Numbers, Time, and Dates" unit.

Key phrase: "How much is it?"

  "How much is this?"
• Dzalian dzviri aris. Upro iapi gqvt?

These short dialogues illustrate how the same small toolkit of phrases works in different places. Grammar details will be explained in other parts of the course. Here you focus on recognition and use.

At a shop counter

Customer and shop assistant.

• Customer: Gamarjoba. Es ra ghirs?
  გამარჯობა. ეს რა ღირს?
  "Hello. How much is this?"
• Assistant: Gamarjoba. Orman lari.
  გამარჯობა. ორ მან ლარი.
  "Hello. Two and a half lari."
  (Exact number forms will be covered later.)
• Customer: Kargi, erti es, tu sheidzleba.
  კარგი, ერთი ეს, თუ შეიძლება.
  "Ok, one of this, please."
• Assistant: Kargi, gmadlobt.
  კარგი, გმადლობთ.
  "Good, thank you."

Notice how es ra ghirs? and erti es, tu sheidzleba are enough for basic shopping.

Asking for directions on the street

• You: Bodishi, sad aris metro?
  ბოდიში, სად არის მეტრო?
  "Excuse me, where is the metro?"
• Passerby: Imit orid kmshi.
  იქით ორიწამში.
  "Over there, two minutes away."
  (Precise wording and numbers will be refined later.)
• You: Didi madloba!
  დიდი მადლობა!
  "Thank you very much!"

Here you reuse bodishi, sad aris + place, and polite thanks.

At a café

• You: Gamarjoba. Menyu gaaqvt?
  გამარჯობა. მენიუ გაქვთ?
  "Hello. Do you have a menu?"
• Waiter: Ki, ratkmaunda.
  კი, რასაკვირველია.
  "Yes, of course."
• You: Ts’q’ali da qava, tu sheidzleba.
  წყალი და ყავა, თუ შეიძლება.
  "Water and coffee, please."
• Waiter: Kargi, tavidan kidev ra gindat?
  კარგი, თავიდან კიდევ რა გინდათ?
  "Good. Anything else for now?"

You already know gamarjoba, tu sheidzleba, and can guess that gindat is part of "want", which will be studied in the verb chapters.

In a taxi or on a bus

• Passenger: Bodishi, sad aris avtobisis garetchereba?
  ბოდიში, სად არის ავტობუსის გაჩერება?
  "Excuse me, where is the bus stop?"
• Local: Imit, mag sakhlis tshirde.
  იქით, მაგ სახლის წინ.
  "That way, in front of that house."
• Passenger: Didi madloba.
  დიდი მადლობა.
  "Thank you very much."
• In taxi:
• You: Bodishi, meore k’uch’aze gavadit, tu sheidzleba.
  ბოდიში, მეორე ქუჩაზე გავდივთ, თუ შეიძლება.
  "Excuse me, we get off at the second street, please."

Even if you do not yet know all nouns like "street" or "house", the pattern sad aris + place and polite forms are already usable.

Strategies for Beginners in Real Situations

As an absolute beginner, you may not be able to form full sentences. Still, you can communicate quite a lot using only single words plus the patterns you have already seen.

Here are simple strategies:

1. Point + say "es" (this) or "is" (that).
   Combine with erti (one) and tu sheidzleba (please).
• Pointing: erti es, tu sheidzleba.
  ერთი ეს, თუ შეიძლება.
  "One of this, please."
2. Use "bodishi" to start any request.
   This softens your question and sounds polite.
• Bodishi, tualeti?
  ბოდიში, ტუალეტი?
  With gesture this can mean: "Excuse me, where is the toilet?"
3. Use "ver gavige" to show you do not understand.
   Then add anglurat laparakobt? if you hope for English.
• Ver gavige, anglurat laparakobt?
  ვერ გავიგე, ინგლისურად ლაპარაკობთ?
  "I did not understand, do you speak English?"
4. Use "es ra ghirs?" anywhere there is a price.
   Just change es to is if you point at something farther away.
• Is ra ghirs?
  ის რა ღირს?
  "How much is that?"

These four tools, plus greetings and thanks, let you handle many everyday moments.

Building Confidence in Real Interactions

When you are in Georgia or talk to Georgians, real speech can feel too fast. At this point, focus on:

• Recognizing frequent words, even if you cannot yet reply with long sentences.
• Using short correct chunks instead of translating from English in your head.

Try these habits:

1. Shadowing: listen to a simple dialogue, then repeat it phrase by phrase.
2. Slot practice: take one pattern and change only one word.

For example, start with:

• Es ra ghirs?
  Then practice:
• Es ra ghirs, gogo?
• Es ra ghirs, batono?

(Address forms and politeness titles will be described in cultural chapters.)

3. Phrase cards: write on a small card or your phone:
• Gamarjoba
• Bodishi
• Madloba
• Es ra ghirs?
• Sad aris tualeti?
  Read and repeat them during the day.

Later grammar chapters will explain why verbs look different and how cases work. For now, you focus on communicating meaning using set phrases with stable shapes.

You do not need to master everything now. You can already use the short expressions from this overview, and each following chapter will add new words and patterns that connect to what you see here.
