Using Pauses Naturally in Georgian
When you speak a new language, you often need a moment to think. In Georgian, there are many natural little words and expressions that give you this thinking time and keep your speech sounding fluent and friendly.
This chapter focuses on those small but very useful tools.
Simple Fillers While You Think
These are short sounds or words you can say while planning your next sentence. They do not add much meaning. They just keep the conversation flowing.
Very short fillers
| Georgian | Pronunciation | Rough meaning / use |
|---|---|---|
| ეე… | e… | “uh…”, hesitation |
| აუ… | au… | “oh… / wow…”, also to buy time |
| აჰა… | aha… | “okay… / right…”, thinking |
| ჰმ… | hm… | “hmm…”, thinking, considering |
Examples:
- ეე… არ ვიცი.
E… ar vitsi.
“Uh… I do not know.” - ჰმ… კარგი იდეაა.
Hm… kargi ideaa.
“Hmm… it is a good idea.” - აჰა… გავიგე.
Aha… gavige.
“Okay… I got it.” - აუ… ძნელია.
Au… dznelia.
“Oh… it is difficult.”
(Can also work as a thinking pause.)
Use these very short fillers sparingly in more formal situations.
They are very common in everyday speech, but in a job interview or a serious talk, try to use more neutral expressions like ერთი წუთი “one moment” or მოიცადე/მოითმინეთ “wait, be patient”.
Buying Time Before You Answer
Sometimes you need a full second or two to think of words or grammar. These short phrases can start your answer so you do not stay completely silent.
Neutral time buyers
| Georgian | Pronunciation | Meaning / use |
|---|---|---|
| ერთი წუთი | erti tsuti | “one moment”, short pause |
| ოო, ერთი წუთი | oo, erti tsuti | “oh, one moment…”, thinking |
| ერთ წუთს მოვიფიქრებ | ert tsuts movipikreb | “I will think for a moment” |
| ცოტას ვიფიქრებ | tsotas vipikreb | “I will think a bit” |
Examples:
- ერთი წუთი, პასუხს ვეძებ.
Erti tsuti, pasus vdzeb.
“One moment, I am looking for the answer.” - ოო, ერთი წუთი… არ მახსოვს ზუსტად.
Oo, erti tsuti… ar makhsovs zustad.
“Oh, one moment… I do not remember exactly.” - ცოტას ვიფიქრებ და გიპასუხებ.
Tsotas vipikreb da gipasukheb.
“I will think a bit and answer you.”
You can say these, then pause, then continue your sentence.
Showing You Are Thinking, Not Finished
These expressions tell the listener that you are still forming your idea. They keep them from interrupting and give you more space to speak.
“Let me think…”
| Georgian | Pronunciation | Meaning / use |
|---|---|---|
| ვიფიქრო… | vipikro… | “let me think…” (short) |
| მოდი, ვიფიქრო… | modi, vipikro… | “let me think…” (more natural) |
| ვფიქრობ რომ… | vpikrob rom… | “I think that…” starting a thought |
| მგონი… | mgoni… | “I think / I guess…” |
Examples:
- მოდი, ვიფიქრო… მგონი ორშაბათს მაქვს დრო.
Modi, vipikro… mgoni orshabats makvs dro.
“Let me think… I think I have time on Monday.” - ვფიქრობ რომ… ქართული საჭმელი ძალიან მიყვარს.
Vpikrob rom… kartuli sachmeli dzalian miqvars.
“I think that… I really like Georgian food.” - ჰმ… მგონი ასე ჯობია.
Hm… mgoni ase jobia.
“Hmm… I think this is better.”
You can start with მგონი… or ვფიქრობ რომ… when you are choosing your words.
Softening Silence When You Do Not Know
If you need longer time, or you are not sure, you can show it politely. This also gives you time to search your memory or your vocabulary.
“I am not sure”, “good question”
| Georgian | Pronunciation | Meaning / use |
|---|---|---|
| არ ვიცი ზუსტად… | ar vitsi zustad… | “I do not know exactly…” |
| არ ვარ დარწმუნებული… | ar var darbtsmnebuli… | “I am not sure…” |
| კარგი შეკითხვაა… | kargi shekitkhvaa… | “It is a good question…” |
| ძნელი კითხვაა… | dznelia kitkvaa… | “It is a difficult question…” |
Examples:
- ჰმ… არ ვიცი ზუსტად… თბილისშია თუ არა.
Hm… ar vitsi zustad… Tbilisshia tu ara.
“Hmm… I do not know exactly… if it is in Tbilisi or not.” - კარგი შეკითხვაა… არ ვარ დარწმუნებული.
Kargi shekitkhvaa… ar var darbtsmnebuli.
“That is a good question… I am not sure.” - ეე… ძნელი კითხვაა… ცოტას ვიფიქრებ.
E… dznelia kitkvaa… tsotas vipikreb.
“Uh… it is a difficult question… I will think a bit.”
These phrases reduce pressure and feel very natural in real conversations.
Repeating to Gain Time
Repeating a word or part of the question is a common and polite way to buy thinking time. It also helps you check that you understood.
Echoing the question
| Pattern in Georgian | Meaning / use |
|---|---|
| [keyword]? [keyword]… | Repeat the main word and trail off |
| ანუ, [paraphrase of question] | “So, …” then restate in your own words |
Examples:
- A: როდის ჩამოხვალ?
Rodis chamokhval?
“When will you come?”
B: როდის… ემ… ალბათ შაბათს.
Rodis… em… albat shabats.
“When… um… probably on Saturday.”
- A: რას აკეთებ თავისუფალ დროს?
Ras aketeb tavisufal dros?
“What do you do in your free time?”
B: თავისუფალ დროს… ანუ, რას მიყვარს… ვკითხულობ და მუსიკას ვუსმენ.
Tavisufal dros… anu, ras miqvars… vkthulob da musikas vusmen.
“In my free time… so, what I like… I read and listen to music.”
Using “ანუ” to buy time
ანუ means “so” or “that is to say” and gives a little pause.
Examples:
- ანუ… შენ გინდა რომ მე მოვიდე?
Anu… shen ginda rom me movide?
“So… you want me to come?” - ანუ, ასე რომ… უნდა წავიდე ადრე.
Anu, ase rom… unda tsavide adre.
“So, that means… I have to leave early.”
Starting Sentences Slowly
Sometimes the hardest moment is the first word. These starters let you begin speaking even if the main verb or noun is not ready yet in your mind.
Soft sentence openers
| Georgian | Pronunciation | Use |
|---|---|---|
| კი, მაგრამ… | ki, magram… | “yes, but…” while you think next part |
| მოგიყვები რომ… | mogiqvebi rom… | “I will tell you that…” |
| ვფიქრობ რომ… | vpikrob rom… | “I think that…” |
| როგორც ვხედავ… | rogorts vkhedav… | “as I see it…” |
Examples:
- კი, მაგრამ… ჯერ უნდა ვიფიქრო.
Ki, magram… jer unda vipikro.
“Yes, but… I must think first.” - როგორც ვხედავ… ყველა დაკავებულია.
Rogorts vkhedav… qvela dakavebulia.
“As I see it… everybody is busy.”
You can start with one of these, then slowly build the rest of your idea.
Pausing Politely in Dialogues
Look at some short sample dialogues that show fillers and thinking time in action.
Dialogue 1: Looking for a word
A: რა საქმეს აკეთებ?
Ra sakmes aketeb?
“What work do you do?”
B: ეე… ერთი წუთი… ქართულად… ჰმ… ვასწავლი ინგლისურს.
E… erti tsuti… kartulad… hm… vastsavli inglisurs.
“Uh… one moment… in Georgian… hmm… I teach English.”
Here the speaker uses ეე…, ერთი წუთი…, and ჰმ… to think and search for the verb ვასწავლი.
Dialogue 2: Not sure of the answer
A: შენი საყვარელი ქართული კერძი რა არის?
Sheni sakvareli kartuli kerzi ra aris?
“What is your favorite Georgian dish?”
B: ჰმ… კარგი შეკითხვაა… მგონი ხინკალი, მაგრამ არ ვარ დარწმუნებული.
Hm… kargi shekitkhvaa… mgoni khinkali, magram ar var darbtsmnebuli.
“Hmm… that is a good question… I think khinkali, but I am not sure.”
The phrase კარგი შეკითხვაა buys time without sounding nervous.
Dialogue 3: Clarifying and thinking
A: ორშაბათს შეგხვდები?
Orshabats shegkhvdebi?
“Will I meet you on Monday?”
B: ორშაბათს… ანუ, გინდა რომ საღამოს მოვიდე?
Orshabats… anu, ginda rom saghamos movide?
“On Monday… so, you want me to come in the evening?”
A: ჰო, საღამოს.
Ho, saghamos.
“Yes, in the evening.”
B: მოდი, ვიფიქრო… მგონი შემიძლია.
Modi, vipikro… mgoni shemidzlia.
“Let me think… I think I can.”
Here ანუ and მოდი, ვიფიქრო help to keep the flow while the speaker decides.
Practical Tips for Using Fillers
- Choose a few favorites: For a start, learn to use just 3 or 4:
ეე…, ერთი წუთი, მოდი, ვიფიქროთ (or ვიფიქრო), არ ვიცი ზუსტად…. - Use them before difficult grammar: Say your filler first, then build the tricky part.
- Do not overuse them: If every sentence starts with ანუ or ჰმ, it may sound strange. Mix them.
- Listen for them in real speech: Native speakers use fillers a lot. Notice when and how.
Key idea: In Georgian, small fillers are natural and friendly.
Silence is not always bad, but a short ეე…, ერთი წუთი…, or მგონი… can make you sound more relaxed and keep conversations smooth.
