Expressing Surprise in Georgian

Being able to show surprise, interest, and emotion makes your Georgian sound alive and friendly. In this chapter you will learn short, common expressions that Georgians really use, plus a few simple sentence patterns.

Remember, you are an absolute beginner, so focus on imitating short phrases. You do not need to build long sentences yet.

Basic Exclamations of Surprise

These are very short words or phrases that you can use alone, like “Wow!” or “Really?” in English.

Examples in mini dialogues:

• A: დღეს მიხეილ ჯექთსონი ვნახე.
  A: dghes mikheil jekhtsoni vnaxe.
  “I saw Michael Jackson today.”

B: მართლა?
B: martla?
“Really?”

• A: ლატარიაში მოვიგე.
  A: latariaši movige.
  “I won the lottery.”

B: არ არსებობს!
B: ar arsebobs!
“No way!”

• A: გუშინ სამი კილომეტრი ვირბინე.
  A: gushin sami kilometrI virbine.
  “Yesterday I ran three kilometers.”

B: ვაუ!
B: vau!
“Wow!”

Positive Surprise and Admiration

When you are impressed or you like something, you can use these short exclamations.

Examples:

• შენი ქართული ძალიან კარგია!
  sheni kartuli dzalian kargia!
  “Your Georgian is very good!”
• მაგარია, ასე გააგრძელე.
  magaria, ase gaagrdzele.
  “Awesome, keep it up like this.”
• ეს სიმღერა ბომბაა!
  es simghera bombaa!
  “This song is amazing!” (very slang)

You can also add a “wow” word plus a positive word:

• ვაუ, რა კარგია!
  vau, ra kargia!
  “Wow, how good it is!”
• უაუ, რა ლამაზია!
  uau, ra lamazia!
  “Wow, how beautiful it is!”

Mild Surprise and “Oh, I See”

Sometimes you are not shocked, just a little surprised or you have learned something new.

Examples:

• A: მე საქართველოშა ვცხოვრობ.
  A: me sakartveloša vtskhovrob.
  “I live in Georgia.”

B: ოჰო, არ ვიცოდი.
B: oho, ar vitsodi.
“Oh, I did not know.”

• A: დღეს ვერ მოვალ.
  A: dghes ver moval.
  “I cannot come today.”

B: ა, ხო, გასაგებია.
B: a, kho, gasagebia.
“Ah, OK, I see.”

Showing Interest in What Someone Says

You often want to show that you are listening and interested. These are short, friendly responses that keep the conversation going.

Short “I am listening” words

Examples:

• A: გუშინ ტიბილიში ვიყავი.
  A: gushin tibilishi viqavi.
  “Yesterday I was in Tbilisi.”

B: მართლა? მერე?
B: martla? mere?
“Really? And then?”

• A: ახალი სამსახური ვიპოვე.
  A: akhali samšxuri vipove.
  “I found a new job.”

B: ხოო? სად?
B: khoo? sad?
“Yeah? Where?”

Saying “interesting”

Examples:

• ეს წიგნი ძალიან საინტერესოა.
  es ts’igni dzalian sainteresoa.
  “This book is very interesting.”
• შენი ისტორია საინტერესოა.
  sheni istoria sainteresoa.
  “Your story is interesting.”

You can add a short “wow” word first:

• ვაუ, ძალიან საინტერესოა.
  vau, dzalian sainteresoa.
  “Wow, it is very interesting.”

Showing Enjoyment and Liking Something

Here are very easy patterns to show positive feeling. Full grammar of “to like” comes later. For now use simple “I like + noun” and “It is tasty, fun, beautiful” types of sentences.

Saying “I like …”

Use:

• მე მიყვარს X
  me miqvars X
  “I love / really like X”
  (You will learn the grammar later, just memorize this pattern.)

Examples:

• მე მიყვარს თბილისი.
  me miqvars tbilisi.
  “I love Tbilisi.”
• მე მიყვარს ქართული ენა.
  me miqvars kartuli ena.
  “I love the Georgian language.”
• მე მიყვარს ყავა.
  me miqvars qava.
  “I love coffee.”

Saying something is tasty, fun, beautiful

Useful adjectives for feelings:

Examples:

• ეს ხინკალი ძალიან გემრიელია.
  es khinkali dzalian gemrielia.
  “This khinkali is very tasty.”
• თბილისი ძალიან ლამაზია.
  tbilisi dzalian lamazia.
  “Tbilisi is very beautiful.”
• დღესასწაული ძალიან სასიამოვნოა.

  “The celebration is very pleasant.”

Combine with surprise or admiration:

• ვაუ, ეს ღვინო ძალიან გემრიელია.

Showing Sympathy and Mild Sad Emotion

Sometimes your friend tells you bad news. Use these simple empathetic phrases.

• A: დავკარგე ტელეფონი.

  “I lost my phone.”

B: ვაი, რა ცუდი.
B: vai, ra tsudi.
“Oh no, how bad.”

• A: ბებია ავადაა.
  A: bebia avadaa.

B: ძალიან ვწუხვარ.
B: dzalian vts’ukhvar.
“I am very sorry.”

• A: კონცერტი გააუქმეს.

Showing Surprise with “How …!”

English often uses “How nice!”, “How beautiful!”. Georgian has a very similar pattern.

A very useful pattern for you:

Common adjectives with this pattern:

• რა კარგი ამინდია!
  ra kargi amindia!
  “What nice weather!”
• რა ლამაზია ეს სურათი!
  ra lamazia es surati!
  “How beautiful this picture is!”

You can add a “wow” word:

• უაუ, რა ლამაზი ხარ!
  uau, ra lamazi khar!
  “Wow, how beautiful you are!” (informal, to a person)

Showing Surprise with Question Intonation

Georgians often use very short questions with surprised intonation. The words are simple, but the voice goes up to show surprise.

Common short questions:

Examples:

• A: სამ საათზე ვიძინებ.
  A: sam saatze vidzineb.
  “I go to sleep at 3 o’clock.”

B: სერიოზულად?
B: seriozulad?
“Seriously?”

• A: დღეს თოვდა.
  A: dghes thovda.
  “It snowed today.”

B: ნამდვილად?
B: namdvilat?
“Really?”

Showing Strong Emotions with “Very” and “So”

One easy way to make emotion stronger is to add ძალიან (dzalian) “very” or რა (ra) “so / how” before an adjective.

Useful intensifiers:

Examples with positive feeling:

• ძალიან მიხარია.
  dzalian mikharIa.
  “I am very happy.”
• დღეს ძალიან ბედნიერი ვარ.
  dghes dzalian bednieri var.
  “Today I am very happy.”

Examples with surprise or negative feeling:

• საშინლად დავიღალე.
  sashindlad davighale.
  “I am terribly tired.”
• დღეს ძალიან ცხელა.
  dghes dzalian tskhela.
  “It is very hot today.”

Combine with surprise:

• ვაუ, დღეს ძალიან ცივაა!
  vau, dghes dzalian tsivaa!
  “Wow, it is very cold today!”

Common Emotional Reactions in Short Dialogues

Here are some simple beginner friendly dialogues that show emotion. Try to read them aloud and feel the tone.

Dialogue 1, Happy surprise

A: დღეს გამოცდა ჩავაბარე.
A: dghes gamotsda chavabare.
“I passed the exam today.”

B: მართლა? ძალიან მიხარია!
B: martla? dzalian mikharIa!
“Really? I am very happy!”

A: მადლობა!

“Thank you!”

Dialogue 2, Negative surprise

A: dghes samshxuri davkarge.
“I lost my job today.”

B: ვაი, ძალიან ვწუხვარ.

Dialogue 3, Showing interest

A: მე თბილისიდან არ ვარ, ბატუმიდან ვარ.
A: me tbilisidan ar var, batumidan var.
“I am not from Tbilisi, I am from Batumi.”

B: მართლა? ძალიან საინტერესოა.
B: martla? dzalian sainteresoa.
“Really? It is very interesting.”

A: ზღვა მიყვარს.
A: zghva miqvars.
“I love the sea.”

B: ვაუ, მეც მიყვარს ზღვა.

Dialogue 4, Mixed emotions

A: დღეს ძალიან ცხელა, მაგრამ ქალაქი ძალიან ლამაზია.
A: dghes dzalian tskhela, magram qalaqi dzalian lamazia.
“Today it is very hot, but the city is very beautiful.”

B: ხო, რა ლამაზი ქალაქია თბილისი!
B: kho, ra lamazi qalaqia tbilisi!
“Yeah, how beautiful a city Tbilisi is!”

Simple Body Language and Tone Tips

Short tips that work well with beginners:

• Georgians often use a warm tone and smile when they say positive things like კარგია! (kargia!), მაგარია! (magaria!).
• When surprised, the voice goes up at the end of მართლა? (martla?), სერიოზულად? (seriozulad?), ნამდვილად? (namdvilat?).
• For sympathy, the tone is softer and slower on words like ვაი (vai) and ძალიან ვწუხვარ (dzalian vts’ukhvar).

You do not need to copy native intonation perfectly. Just try to say the words clearly and a bit slower.

New Vocabulary for This Chapter
