Where forms look difficult, you can still learn and reuse full sentence patterns as “blocks”, like phrases.

Simple Past Plans: What You Did

You already know basic ways to express past time. Here we focus on using those patterns to talk about planned or organised actions in the past: trips, meetings, events.

Typical time words for past plans:

You can combine a past time word with common verbs you already know. Here are some patterns that are very useful when you describe your schedule or past activities.

1. “I was at …” with the verb “to be”

You can replace the place:

• სამსახურში ვიყავი.
  “I was at the office / work.”
• უნივერსიტეტში ვიყავი.
  “I was at the university.”

2. “I went to …”

A very practical verb is “to go,” წასვლა (ts’asvla). One common past form for “I went” in everyday speech is:

• წავედი (ts’avedi) “I went.”

Use it with destinations:

You do not need to fully analyse the verb forms yet. Memorise these whole sentences to describe common past plans:

You can change the time word or object but keep the verb the same.

Pattern to copy:

• გუშინ X ვნახე.
  “Yesterday I saw / visited X.”

Replace X:

• მეგობარი ვნახე. “I saw a friend.”
• პედაგოგი ვნახე. “I saw the teacher.”
• ექიმი ვნახე. “I saw the doctor.”

Simple Future Plans: What You Will Do

To talk about the future you will often use time words plus a simple future form or a “plan” expression.

Key future time words:

Future with “to go” for plans

Again წასვლა is very practical. A common 1st person future form for “I will go” is:

• წავალ (ts’aval) “I will go.”

Use it together with a future time word.

You can also speak about other people:

• ის ხვალ თბილისში წავა.
  “He / she will go to Tbilisi tomorrow.”

Saying “I will be” somewhere

You can speak about your future position or presence.

• ვიქნები (viknebi) “I will be,” from to be.

This is useful if someone wants to meet you or contact you.

Using “I am going to … / I plan to …”

In casual speech, Georgians often use the present tense with a future time word to express a plan, just like English “I am going to …”.

Very common verbs:

• ვაპირებ (vapireb) “I plan, I intend.”
• შენ გეგმავ (shen ggmav) “you plan.”
• ის გეგმავს (is ggmavs) “he / she plans.”

Pattern with ვაპირებ:

• ხვალ თბილისში წასვლას ვაპირებ.
  “I plan to go to Tbilisi tomorrow.”

Literally: “Tomorrow to Tbilisi going I plan.”

More examples:

You can also ask:

• რას აპირებ ხვალ?
  “What are you going to do tomorrow?”

Answer with the same pattern:

• ხვალ მეგობართან შეხვედრას ვაპირებ.
  “Tomorrow I plan to meet a friend.”

You do not need to create the verbal noun yourself yet. You can copy common ready-made blocks:

• თბილისში წასვლას ვაპირებ. “I plan to go to Tbilisi.”
• ფილმის ყურებას ვაპირებ. “I plan to watch a film.”
• სამსახურში წასვლას ვაპირებ. “I plan to go to work.”
• მეგობართან შეხვედრას ვაპირებ. “I plan to meet a friend.”

Comparing Past and Future Plans

To speak more naturally you often want to say what you did and what you will do in one short description.

“Last week I …, next week I will …”

You can build similar sentences:

1. Choose a past time + past action.
2. Add a comma.
3. Add a future time + future action.

“Yesterday I planned, today I am doing, tomorrow I will finish”

Use simple verbs and time words to tell a mini timeline.

Examples:

• გუშინ ვგეგმავდი, დღეს ვმუშაობ, ხვალ დავასრულებ.
  “Yesterday I planned, today I am working, tomorrow I will finish.”
• გუშინ ბილეთები ვიყიდე, ხვალ თბილისში წავალ.
  “Yesterday I bought the tickets, tomorrow I will go to Tbilisi.”

Talking About Travel Plans

Travel is a common topic when you speak about past and future plans. Here are useful phrases connected to travel.

Past travel

You can answer questions like:

• სად იყავი შარშან ზაფხულში?
  “Where were you last summer?”

Example answer:

• შარშან ზაფხულში ბათუმში და ქუთაისში ვიყავი.
  “Last summer I was in Batumi and Kutaisi.”

Future travel

For future travel, combine წავალ or ვაპირებ with names of places.

Now connect past experience with future goals. These sentences are a bit longer, but they follow the same patterns.

Patterns for personal “story” sentences

1. Start with past experience.
2. Add a connector: ამიტომ (“therefore”), და (“and”), ამიტომ ახლა (“therefore now”).
3. Add future plan or wish.

Examples:

• შარშან საქართველოში ვიყავი და ძალიან მომეწონა, ამიტომ მომავალ წელს ისევ წასვლას ვაპირებ.
  “Last year I was in Georgia and I liked it very much, therefore next year I plan to go again.”
• ადრე ქართულს ცოტას ვსწავლობდი, მაგრამ ახლა უფრო სერიოზულად სწავლას ვაპირებ.
  “Before I studied a little Georgian, but now I plan to study more seriously.”
• ერთი თვე თბილისში ვიმუშავე, ამიტომ მომავალში საქართველოში ცხოვრება უნდა.
  “I worked one month in Tbilisi, therefore in the future I want to live in Georgia.”

These long sentences may be hard at first. You can start with shorter versions:

• შარშან საქართველოში ვიყავი, მომავალ წელს ისევ წასვლას ვაპირებ.
  “Last year I was in Georgia, next year I plan to go again.”
