Understanding Months and Seasons in Georgian
In this chapter you will learn the Georgian names of the months and the four seasons, and how to start using them in simple phrases. You will also see how dates are often mentioned in everyday speech, without going into full dateโforming rules, which you will study later.
The Four Seasons in Georgian
Georgian has four seasons, just like English. Here are their basic names.
| English | Georgian (Mkhedruli) | Transliteration | Pronunciation hint |
|---|---|---|---|
| spring | แแแแแคแฎแฃแแ | gazapkhuli | ga-ZAP-khoo-li |
| summer | แแแคแฎแฃแแ | zapkhuli | ZAP-khoo-li |
| autumn / fall | แจแแแแแแแแ | shemodgoma | she-mo-DGO-ma (dg as in "adgo") |
| winter | แแแแแแ แ | zamthari | ZAM-ta-ri (แ = soft t) |
You can use these words alone, or in simple sentences.
Examples:
- แแแแแคแฎแฃแแ แแแแแแ.
gazapkhuli tbilia.
โSpring is warm.โ - แแแคแฎแฃแแ แชแฎแแแแ.
zapkhuli tskhelia.
โSummer is hot.โ - แจแแแแแแแแ แแแแแแแ.
shemodgoma lamazia.
โAutumn is beautiful.โ - แแแแแแ แ แชแแแแ.
zamthari tsivia.
โWinter is cold.โ
You can also say โin springโ, โin summerโ, etc. Everyday speech often uses a simple pattern โin the springโ with the word แแแแแคแฎแฃแแแ or แแแแแคแฎแฃแแจแ. For now, just remember these very common forms:
| English | Georgian (common form) | Transliteration |
|---|---|---|
| in spring | แแแแแคแฎแฃแแแ | gazapkhulze |
| in summer | แแแคแฎแฃแแจแ / แแแคแฎแฃแแแ | zapkhulshi / zapkhulze |
| in autumn | แจแแแแแแแแแแ | shemodgomaze |
| in winter | แแแแแแ แจแ / แแแแแแ แแ | zamtharshi / zamtharit |
We will not analyze the case endings here. Just learn them as ready phrases.
Examples:
- แแแแแคแฎแฃแแแ แฎแจแแ แแ แฌแแแแก.
gazapkhulze khshirad tshuims.
โIn spring it often rains.โ - แแแคแฎแฃแแจแ แแฆแแแกแแแ แ แฅแแแแฅแจแ แแแ .
zapkhulshi zghvispira kalakshi var.
โIn summer I am in a seaside city.โ
The Twelve Months
Georgian month names are close to international forms, but they look and sound Georgian. All month names are written with a small initial letter in normal Georgian writing, but in English explanation we keep the capital in translation.
Month Names Table
| Number | English | Georgian (Mkhedruli) | Transliteration | Pronunciation hint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | January | แแแแแแ แ | ianvari | ee-AN-va-ri |
| 2 | February | แแแแแ แแแแ | tebervali | TE-ber-va-li |
| 3 | March | แแแ แขแ | marti | MAR-ti |
| 4 | April | แแแ แแแ | aprili | a-PRI-li |
| 5 | May | แแแแกแ | maisi | MA-ee-si (2 vowels: a + i) |
| 6 | June | แแแแแกแ | ivnisi | IV-ni-si (v + n together) |
| 7 | July | แแแแแกแ | ivlisi | IV-li-si |
| 8 | August | แแแแแกแขแ | agvistโo | AG-vis-to (tโ ejective) |
| 9 | September | แกแแฅแขแแแแแ แ | sektemberi | sek-tem-BE-ri |
| 10 | October | แแฅแขแแแแแ แ | oktomberi | ok-TOM-be-ri |
| 11 | November | แแแแแแแ แ | noemberi | no-EM-be-ri |
| 12 | December | แแแแแแแแ แ | dekemberi | de-kem-BE-ri |
Some are very easy to recognize, especially September to December.
Saying โin Januaryโ, โin Mayโ, etc.
In Georgian, when you want to say โin Januaryโ, you usually add a small ending to the month name, often โแจแ or โแจแแ depending on the sentence. For simple everyday speech, the form with โแจแ is very common.
Useful pattern
To say โin [month]โ, a very common spoken pattern is:
[month name] + แจแ
For example: แแแแแแ แจแ โin Januaryโ.
In this chapter we do not fully explain why this ending appears. Just memorize some typical forms.
| English | Georgian | Transliteration |
|---|---|---|
| in January | แแแแแแ แจแ | ianvarshi |
| in February | แแแแแ แแแแจแ | tebervalshi |
| in March | แแแ แขแจแ | martshi |
| in April | แแแ แแแจแ | aprilshi |
| in May | แแแแกแจแ | maisshi |
| in June | แแแแแกแจแ | ivnisshi |
| in July | แแแแแกแจแ | ivlisshi |
| in August | แแแแแกแขแแจแ | agvistoshi |
| in September | แกแแฅแขแแแแแ แจแ | sektembershi |
| in October | แแฅแขแแแแแ แจแ | oktombershi |
| in November | แแแแแแแ แจแ | noembershi |
| in December | แแแแแแแแ แจแ | dekembershi |
Note that Georgian spelling can double some consonants when endings are added. For now, focus on the sound and the idea โin [month]โ.
Examples:
- แแแแแแ แจแ แชแแแ.
ianvarshi tsiva.
โIn January it is cold.โ - แแแแกแจแ แแแแแแกแจแ แแแ .
maisshi tbilisshi var.

โIn August I have a vacation.โ - แแแแแแแแ แจแ แแฎแแแ แฌแแแ แแแแแก.
dekembershi akhali tsโeli modis.
โIn December New Year is coming.โ
