In this chapter you will learn how to talk simply about work and studies in Georgian. You will see how to say where you work or study, what you do, and ask others about their job or school.

Basic nouns for work and study

Start with the most common words you need to mention work and studies.

Places

Notice the ending \-ში \-shi, which you already met in other chapters. Here it tells you that something is in or at a place, for example სკოლაში means at school.

Saying what your job is

To say your job in the simplest way, you combine the verb “to be” with a profession noun. Here we focus on common job words and example patterns, not on the full verb table.

Common professions

Simple “I am a …” patterns

Use these patterns as simple templates. The exact form of the verb “to be” is handled in its own chapter, so here you just observe and copy.

You can replace the profession words to make your own sentences.

Saying where you work or study

You already know how to say “I am” and place words with \-ში. Combine them to say “I am at work” or “I am at university.”

At work or at school right now

• მე სამსახურში ვარ.

To say that you are not at work or school:

Saying the place you work or study

You can add the name of a company, school, or city.

• მე ბანკში ვმუშაობ.
  me bank-shi v-mu-sha-ob
  I work in a bank.
• მე სკოლაში ვმუშაობ.
  me sko-la-shi v-mu-sha-ob
  I work at a school.
• მე თბილისში ვსწავლობ.

You often put the subject in the form that answers “what.” You will learn case forms later, so simply copy these patterns now.

Very often you want to say not only “I work,” but where or for which type of place you work.
