Asking for Directions

When you travel in Georgia, you will very often need to ask where something is and how to get there. In this chapter you will see simple, very high frequency patterns that you can reuse in many situations.

Key question patterns

The most common way to ask where something is:

• სად არის ...?
  sad aris ...?
  “Where is ...?”

You can put almost any place word after სად არის.

Examples:

• სად არის ტუალეტი?
  sad aris tualeti?
  Where is the toilet?
• სად არის მეტრო-სადგური?
  sad aris metro-sadguri?
  Where is the metro station?
• სად არის ბანკი?
  sad aris banki?
  Where is the bank?

Another useful pattern:

• როგორ მივიდე ...-თან?
  rogor mivide ...-tan?
  “How can I get to ...?”

You use this more when you want detailed instructions, not only location.

Examples:

• როგორ მივიდე აეროპორტთან?
  rogor mivide aeroporttan?
  How can I get to the airport?
• როგორ მივიდე ცენტრში?
  rogor mivide centrshi?
  How can I get to the center?

სად არის ...? = “Where is ...?”
Very frequent, very useful.
Stress is usually on the first syllable: SAD a-ris ...?

Adding politeness

To sound more polite at the beginning of a question:

• ბოდიშით, ...
  bodishit, “excuse me,” “sorry”

Combine with your question:

• ბოდიშით, სად არის ავტობუსის გაჩერება?
  bodishit, sad aris avtobusis gachereba?
  Excuse me, where is the bus stop?
• ბოდიშით, როგორ მივიდე რკინიგზის სადგურთან?
  bodishit, rogor mivide rkinigzis sadgurtan?
  Excuse me, how can I get to the railway station?

You can also add თუ შეიძლება tu sheidzleba “please, if possible”:

• ბოდიშით, სად არის მეტრო-სადგური, თუ შეიძლება?
  Excuse me, where is the metro station, please?

Asking about distance and direction

You may want to know if a place is near or far, on the right or on the left.

Useful questions:

• შორს არის?
  shors aris?
  Is it far?
• ახლოს არის?
  akhlos aris?
  Is it near / close?
• მარჯვნივ არის თუ მარცხნივ?
  marjvniv aris tu marcxniv?
  Is it to the right or to the left?

You can specify a place:

• მუზეუმი შორს არის?
  muzeumi shors aris?
  Is the museum far?
• სუპერმარკეტი ახლოს არის?
  supermarketi akhlos aris?
  Is the supermarket nearby?

Dialog 1

A: ბოდიშით, სად არის მეტრო-სადგური?

B: იქ არის, პირდაპირ.
Ik aris, pirdapir.
It is there, straight ahead.

Understanding Direction Phrases

When someone gives you directions, some words appear again and again. Here are the most basic ones.

Basic position and place words

Examples:

• მეტრო აქ ახლოს არის.
  metro ak akhlos aris.
  The metro is near here.
• ბანკი იქ, წინ არის.
  banki ik, tsin aris.
  The bank is there, in front.
• ტუალეტი ქვემოთ არის.
  tualeti qvemot aris.
  The toilet is downstairs.

Verbs often used in directions

You will often hear these forms of verbs in directions:

You will hear -თ endings like იარეთ, მოუხვიეთ
This form is used for polite “you” when giving instructions.

Examples in context:

• პირდაპირ იარეთ.
  pirdapir iaret.
  Go straight.
• მარცხნივ მოუხვიეთ.
  marcxniv mouxviet.
  Turn left.
• მარჯვენა მხარეს გაჩერდით.
  marjvena mkhares gacherdit.
  Stop on the right side.

Places and Transport Vocabulary

To ask directions and use transport, you need basic place and transport words.

Common places in the city

Example questions:

• სად არის აფთიაქი?
  sad aris aptiaqi?
  Where is the pharmacy?
• სად არის ავტობუსის გაჩერება ცენტრისთვის?
  sad aris avtobusis gachereba centris-tvis?
  Where is the bus stop for the center?

Transport words

Example sentences:

• მატარებლის სადგური სად არის?

Using Buses, Metro, and Trains

In big cities like Tbilisi, buses and the metro are very common. Here are simple patterns to ask and understand about routes.

Asking about a bus or metro line

Useful pattern:

• რომელი ავტობუსი მიდის ...-ში?
  romeli avtobusi midis ...-shi?
  Which bus goes to ...?
• რომელი მეტრო მიდის ...-ში?
  romeli metro midis ...-shi?
  Which metro line goes to ...?

Examples:

• რომელი ავტობუსი მიდის ცენტრში?
  romeli avtobusi midis centrshi?
  Which bus goes to the center?
• რომელი ავტობუსი მიდის აეროპორტში?
  romeli avtobusi midis aeroportshi?
  Which bus goes to the airport?

რომელი [transport] მიდის ...-ში?
Use this to ask which bus, metro, or train goes to a place.

You can replace ავტობუსი with მეტრო, მატარებელი, or მარშრუტკა.

Asking if a bus goes somewhere

Another frequent pattern is with მიდის თუ არა “goes or not”.

• ეს ავტობუსი მიდის ცენტრში?
  es avtobusi midis centrshi?
  Does this bus go to the center?
• ეს მეტრო მიდის სადგურთან?
  es metro midis sadgurtan?
  Does this metro go to the station?

You can also use the short question:

• ცენტრში მიდის?
  centrshi midis?
  Does it go to the center?

Getting on and off

Some basic verbs and phrases when you ride transport:

For beginners you can also speak simply without changing verbs much:

• შემდეგ გაჩერებაზე ჩამოვდივარ.
  shemdeg gacheraebaze chamovdivar.
  I get off at the next stop.
• აქ უნდა ჩამოვიდე.
  ak unda chamovide.
  I must get off here.

Dialog on a bus

Passenger: ბოდიშით, ეს ავტობუსი აეროპორტში მიდის?
Bodishit, es avtobusi aeroportshi midis?
Excuse me, does this bus go to the airport?

Driver: დიახ, მიდის.
Diakh, midis.
Yes, it goes.

Passenger: აქედან აეროპორტამდე შორს არის?
Ake dan aeroportamde shors aris?
From here to the airport, is it far?

Driver: არა, ახლოს არის.
Ara, akhlos aris.
No, it is near.

Using Taxis and Ride Services

Taxis are very common in Georgia, and many drivers speak at least a little Russian, and sometimes some English, but very basic Georgian will help a lot.

Telling the driver where to go

The simplest pattern is:

• [Place] გთხოვთ.
  [Place] gtxovt.
  “[Place], please.”

Examples:

• ცენტრი გთხოვთ.
  centri gtxovt.
  The center, please.
• რკინიგზის სადგური გთხოვთ.
  rkinigzis sadguri gtxovt.
  Railway station, please.

You can add მიყვანეთ miqvanet “take me”:

• გთხოვთ, მიმიყვანეთ აეროპორტში.
  gtxovt, mimiqvanet aeroportshi.
  Please take me to the airport.
• გთხოვთ, მიმიყვანეთ ამ მისამართზე.
  gtxovt, mimiqvanet am misamar tze.
  Please take me to this address.

Asking about the price

Useful phrases:

• რამდენი ღირს აეროპორტამდე?
  ramdeni ghirs aeroportamde?
  How much does it cost to the airport?
• რამდენი უნდა გადავიხადო?
  ramdeni unda gadavikhado?
  How much should I pay?
• ძვირია.
  dzviria.
  It is expensive.
• კარგია.
  kargia.
  It is good / OK.

In many Georgian taxis the price is fixed by app, but you can still hear these.

Simple dialog in a taxi

Passenger: გამარჯობა. ცენტრი გთხოვთ.
Gamarjoba. centri gtxovt.
Hello. To the center, please.

Driver: კარგი. აქედან ცენტრამდე ათი ლარი.
Kargi. akedan centr amde ati lari.
OK. From here to the center ten lari.

Passenger: კარგია, წავიდეთ.
Kargia, tsavidet.
It is good, let us go.

Reading and Understanding Signs

In transport and in the city you will see many short Georgian words. Here are some useful ones.

Common signs in transport and streets

Example sentences:

• სად არის გასასვლელი?
  sad aris gasasvleli?
  Where is the exit?
• ბილეთები აქ იყიდება.
  biletebi ak iqideba.
  Tickets are sold here.
• ტაქსი გარეთაა.
  taqsi garet aa.
  The taxi is outside.

Here are some longer dialogs that show several patterns together.

Dialog: Asking a passerby in the street

A: ბოდიშით, მეტრო-სადგური სად არის?
Bodishit, metro-sadguri sad aris?
Excuse me, where is the metro station?

B: აქედან შორს არ არის. პირდაპირ იარეთ, ორი კვარტალი, მერე მარჯვნივ მოუხვიეთ.

Sometimes you will feel lost or confused. These short sentences can help.

Saying you are lost or do not understand

• დავიკარგე.
  davi karge.
  I am lost.
• ვერ ვპოულობ სასტუმროს.
  ver vpoulob sastumros.
  I cannot find the hotel.
• გთხოვთ, დამეხმარეთ.
  gtxovt, damekhmaret.
  Please help me.
• გთხოვთ, მითხარით, სად არის ეს მისამართი.

  Please tell me where this address is.
