Building a Daily Routine in Georgian

In this chapter you will learn how to connect many elements from earlier chapters to describe a full day in simple Georgian. You already know basic verbs, present tense, time expressions, and simple sentences. Now the focus is to put them together in natural routine descriptions.

Key Idea: One Main Verb per Step

When you describe a routine, think in small steps: one time expression, one subject, one main verb.

Examples:

• მეცამ (I get up)
• ვსაუზმობ (I have breakfast)
• ვმუშაობ (I work)
• ვისვენებ (I rest)

You can then add place words, time words, and small details.

Useful Time Expressions for a Routine

Here are common time expressions that fit a daily routine. You can place them at the beginning or end of a sentence.

Common Routine Verbs in the Present

You already met some of these verbs before. Here we focus on how they are used in daily routine sentences.

Simple Daily Routine Sentences

Morning routine

Examples with minimal structure:

• დილით ვიღვიძებ.
  “In the morning I wake up.”
• შვიდ საათზე ვდგები.
  “At seven o’clock I get up.”
• ვიბან და კბილებს ვიხეხავ.
  “I wash and brush my teeth.”
• შხაპს ვიღებ.
  “I take a shower.”
• ვიცვამ.
  “I get dressed.”
• ყავას ვსვამ.
  “I drink coffee.”
• ვსაუზმობ ოჯახთან ერთად.
  “I have breakfast together with my family.”

You can combine time and place:

• დილით სახლში ვსაუზმობ.
  “In the morning I have breakfast at home.”

Going to work or school

Use motion verbs with a destination:

• სამსახურში მივდივარ.
  “I go to work.”
• უნივერსიტეტში მივდივარ.
  “I go to university.”
• სკოლაში მივდივარ ავტობუსით.
  “I go to school by bus.”
• მეტროთი მივდივარ.
  “I go by metro.”

Add time:

• ჩვეულებრივ რვა საათზე სახლიდან გამოვდივარ.
  “Usually at eight o’clock I leave home.”
• ყოველდღე მეტროთი მივდივარ სამსახურში.
  “Every day I go to work by metro.”

At work or at school

Some basic patterns:

• ოფისში ვმუშაობ.
  “I work in an office.”
• სახლში ვმუშაობ.
  “I work at home.”
• უნივერსიტეტში ვსწავლობ.
  “I study at university.”
• ქართულს ვსწავლობ.
  “I study Georgian.”
• მეგობრებთან ერთად ვსწავლობ.
  “I study with friends.”

Add time expressions:

• მთელი დღე ვმუშაობ.
  “I work all day.”
• ხშირად ეკრანს ვუყურებ.
  “I often look at a screen.”
• ზოგჯერ დავისვენებ.
  “Sometimes I take a rest.”

Afternoon and Evening Routine

Leaving work or school

• საღამოს სახლში მივდივარ.
  “In the evening I go home.”
• ხუთის ნახევარზე უნივერსიტეტიდან გამოვდივარ.
  “At half past four I leave the university.”
• ჩვეულებრივ ექვს საათზე სახლში ვარ.
  “Usually at six o’clock I am at home.”

After coming home

• სახლში ვისვენებ.
  “At home I rest.”
• ვვახშმობ ოჯახთან ერთად.
  “I have dinner with my family.”
• მუსიკას ვუსმენ.
  “I listen to music.”
• წიგნს ვკითხულობ.
  “I read a book.”
• ინტერნეტში შევდივარ.
  “I go on the internet.”
• ფილმს ვუყურებ.
  “I watch a film.”

You can say what you usually do:

• საღამოს ჩვეულებრივ ფილმს ვუყურებ.
  “In the evening I usually watch a film.”
• ზოგჯერ მეგობრებს ვხვდები.
  “Sometimes I meet friends.”
• იშვიათად ვვარჯიშობ.
  “I rarely exercise.”

Ending the day

• გვიან მივირთმევ ვახშამს.
  “I eat dinner late.”
• ვბანაობ და ვიძინებ.
  “I bathe and go to sleep.”
• თერთმეტ საათზე ვიძინებ.
  “At eleven o’clock I go to sleep.”
• ღამით მძინავს.
  “At night I sleep.”

Linking Actions in Order

To show a clear order in one sentence you can simply use და “and”.

Basic pattern:

[Action 1] და [Action 2]

Examples:

• ვიღვიძებ და ვდგები.
  “I wake up and get up.”
• ვიბან, კბილებს ვიხეხავ და ვიცვამ.
  “I wash, brush my teeth, and get dressed.”
• სამსახურში მივდივარ და ვმუშაობ.
  “I go to work and I work.”
• სახლში მოვდივარ და ვისვენებ.
  “I come home and rest.”

You can also add a time expression at the beginning:

• დილით ვიღვიძებ და ყავას ვსვამ.
  “In the morning I wake up and drink coffee.”

Using Frequency Words in Routine

Frequency words help you show how often you do something.

Place them before the verb or at the beginning:

• ჩვეულებრივ დილით ვვარჯიშობ.
• დილით ჩვეულებრივ ვვარჯიშობ.

Both mean: “I usually exercise in the morning.”

Talking About Weekday vs Weekend Routine

You can contrast your weekday and weekend routines.

Weekdays

• სამუშაო დღეებში ადრიანად ვიღვიძებ.
  “On workdays I wake up early.”
• სამუშაო დღეებში მეტროთი მივდივარ სამსახურში.
  “On workdays I go to work by metro.”
• სამუშაო დღეებში საღამოს ვმეცადინეობ.
  “On workdays in the evening I study.”

Weekends

• შაბათ–კვირას გვიან ვდგები.
  “On weekends I get up late.”
• შაბათ–კვირას ხშირად მეგობრებს ვხვდები.
  “On weekends I often meet friends.”
• შაბათ–კვირას ვსეირნობ და ვისვენებ.
  “On weekends I walk and rest.”

You can join them in one short paragraph:

• სამუშაო დღეებში ადრიანად ვიღვიძებ და სამსახურში მივდივარ. შაბათ–კვირას გვიან ვდგები და ოჯახთან ერთად ვისვენებ.
  “On workdays I wake up early and go to work. On weekends I get up late and rest with my family.”

Model 1: Very simple routine

• ყოველდღე დილით შვიდ საათზე ვიღვიძებ. ვიბან, კბილებს ვიხეხავ და ვიცვამ. რვა საათზე ვსაუზმობ. მერე სამსახურში მივდივარ. შუადღეს ვსადილობ კოლეგებთან ერთად. საღამოს სახლში მივდივარ, ვვახშმობ, ფილმს ვუყურებ და თერთმეტ საათზე ვიძინებ.

English gloss:

Model 2: Student routine

• ჩვეულებრივ სამუშაო დღეებში რვა საათზე ვდგები. ყავას ვსვამ და მსუბუქად ვსაუზმობ. ცხრაზე უნივერსიტეტში მივდივარ ავტობუსით. დილით ვსწავლობ, შუადღეს მეგობრებთან ერთად ვსადილობ. შუადღის შემდეგ ბიბლიოთეკაში ვკითხულობ და ვმეცადინეობ. საღამოს სახლში მივდივარ, ვვარჯიშობ, ვვახშმობ და ოდნავ მუსიკას ვუსმენ. ზოგჯერ გვიან ვიძინებ.

To practice, you can try these tasks:

1. Write 5 sentences for your morning routine, using at least one time expression and one frequency word.
2. Write 3 sentences about what you do after work or school.
3. Write 2 sentences contrasting weekdays and weekends.

For each sentence, check:

• Do you have a clear subject, usually “I” which is inside the verb?
• Do you have a clear verb in present tense?
• Is your time expression placed either at the beginning or near the verb?
