6.7. Places in the City

Exploring Places in the City

In this chapter you will learn common Georgian words for places in a town or city and simple patterns you can use with them. The focus is on recognizing and using these nouns in everyday phrases, especially with the verbs โ€œto be,โ€ โ€œto go,โ€ and โ€œto haveโ€ that you meet elsewhere in the course.

Key Place Words in Georgian

Here are some of the most common places you will hear and see in a Georgian city, especially in Tbilisi.

You can already start making very simple sentences by combining these nouns with โ€œisโ€ and location words from other chapters, for example:

Shops and Services

These are very useful when walking around, asking, and understanding directions.

EnglishGeorgianTransliterationNotes
shop, storeแƒ›แƒแƒฆแƒแƒ–แƒ˜แƒmagaziageneral word for โ€œshopโ€

Notice the pattern for โ€œXโ€™s shopโ€:

You will learn the grammar of possession in another chapter, but you can memorize these as fixed phrases for now.

Very basic patterns:

You will learn the grammar of โ€œinโ€ and โ€œatโ€ with cases and postpositions elsewhere, but you can memorize the whole phrase โ€œแƒฅแƒแƒ แƒฎแƒแƒœแƒแƒจแƒ˜ แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒกโ€ โ€œworks in a factoryโ€ as one unit for now.

Religious and Historical Places

Georgia has many churches and historical buildings. Some common words:

churchแƒ”แƒ™แƒšแƒ”แƒกแƒ˜แƒeklesia
cathedralแƒขแƒแƒซแƒแƒ แƒ˜tazaribig main church

Example phrases:

Simple โ€œCity Walkโ€ Phrases

Here you combine place words with very simple models that you already know or will soon learn: โ€œthere is,โ€ โ€œwhere is,โ€ โ€œI am going.โ€

Basic question with โ€œwhereโ€:

Examples:

To answer, you can use โ€œhereโ€ and โ€œthereโ€ and a nearby place word:

You can also place one building โ€œnearโ€ another using a fixed phrase:

You will study the postposition โ€œแƒ—แƒแƒœโ€ and case endings in another part of the course, but it is helpful to remember a few common chunks now:

You can also say where you are going, very simply, with โ€œI am going to Xโ€:

For now, treat โ€œแƒžแƒแƒ แƒ™แƒจแƒ˜โ€ and โ€œแƒกแƒ™แƒแƒšแƒแƒจแƒ˜โ€ as whole forms meaning โ€œto the parkโ€ and โ€œto school.โ€ The case endings will be explained later.

Useful Place Combinations

You often combine a general word like โ€œstreet,โ€ โ€œsquare,โ€ or โ€œbridgeโ€ with a specific name. These names are often in the genitive case, which you will study in detail elsewhere. At this stage you can simply memorize common patterns.

Examples from Tbilisi:

EnglishGeorgian (Mkhedruli)Transliteration
Rustaveli Avenueแƒ แƒฃแƒกแƒ—แƒแƒ•แƒ”แƒšแƒ˜แƒก แƒ’แƒแƒ›แƒ–แƒ˜แƒ แƒ˜Rustavelis gamziri
Freedom Squareแƒ—แƒแƒ•แƒ˜แƒกแƒฃแƒคแƒšแƒ”แƒ‘แƒ˜แƒก แƒ›แƒแƒ”แƒ“แƒแƒœแƒ˜Tavisuplebis moedani

Metekhi Churchแƒ›แƒ”แƒขแƒ”แƒฎแƒ˜แƒก แƒ”แƒ™แƒšแƒ”แƒกแƒ˜แƒMetekhis eklesia

Patterns to notice:

You do not need to form them yourself yet, but you will recognize them when you see them.

Pirdapir tsadit. Meria a moedanze.
โ€œGo straight. City hall is on the square.โ€

Again, you will learn verb forms like โ€œgoโ€ and โ€œcomeโ€ and directional words in more detail in the chapters about directions and transport. Here, focus on recognizing and using the place nouns.
