Understanding Color Words in Georgian

In Georgian, color words behave like regular adjectives. They usually come after the noun and change form to agree with the noun in many contexts, which you will learn about in other chapters. Here we focus on recognizing and using the most common colors in simple descriptions.

Below, Georgian is given in Latin transcription first, then Mkhedruli script, then English.

Basic Colors

Here are the most frequent basic color words.

Many color words end in -feri ფერი, which literally means “color.” For example:

• qavse / ყავისფერი literally “coffee-colored,” used for brown
• narinJisperi / ნარინჯისფერი literally “orange-colored”
• vardoferi / ვარდისფერი literally “rose-colored,” used for pink

You can start by learning the shorter everyday forms like tsiteli, lurji, mtsvane, shavi, tetri, kviteli.

Using Colors with Nouns

In very simple sentences, we can say “X is Y” with colors. You learned the verb “to be” in another chapter, so here we focus on patterns and examples.

Word order is usually:

noun + is + color

For example:

• es sakhli lurji ia.
  ეს სახლი ლურჯია.
  “This house is blue.”
• masini shavi ia.
  მანქანა შავია.
  “The car is black.”
• kaba tsiteli ia.
  კაბა წითელია.
  “The dress is red.”
• tvali mtsvane aqvs.
  თვალი მწვანე აქვს.
  “He / she has green eyes.” (literally “eye green has”)

To say “this” and “that”:

Examples:

• es kalami kviteli ia.
  ეს კალამი ყვითელია.
  “This pen is yellow.”
• is tskharo tetri ia.
  ის ტასკარო თეთრია. (better: ის კარი თეთრია.)
  “That door is white.”

Corrected example:

• is kari tetri ia.
  ის კარი თეთრია.
  “That door is white.”

Common Color Phrases

Here are some very common short phrases with colors.

You can replace the color to make your own combinations.

Examples:

• lurji kalami / ლურჯი კალამი “blue pen”
• mtsvane tshveni / მწვანე ფანქარი “green pencil”
• tetri tshurtseli / თეთრი ქაღალდი “white paper”

Asking and Answering About Colors

A very helpful question pattern is:

“What color is X?”

In Georgian:

• ra feria X?
  რა ფერია X?

Examples:

• ra feria es kalami?
  რა ფერია ეს კალამი?
  “What color is this pen?”

Possible answers:

• es kalami lurji ia.
  ეს კალამი ლურჯია.
  “This pen is blue.”
• ra feria sheni tshirti?
  რა ფერია შენი ტიშర్టი?
  “What color is your T-shirt?”
• chemi tshirti mtsvane ia.
  ჩემი ტიშერტი მწვანეა.
  “My T-shirt is green.”

You can also ask more simply:

• ra feria? / რა ფერია? “What color is it?”

Answer with only the color:

• tsiteli. / წითელი. “Red.”
• tetri. / თეთრი. “White.”

Talking About Shapes

Now we add some very basic geometric shape words that are useful in simple descriptions.

Basic Shape Words

In everyday language people often say “round” instead of “circle,” so mrghvali / მრგვალი is very common.

Using Shapes to Describe Objects

You will often combine a shape adjective with a noun.

Examples:

• mrghvali magida
  მრგვალი მაგიდა
  “round table”
• kvadrati fuli
  კვადრატი ფული
  “square shape” (more naturally kvadrati forma / კვადრატი ფორმა “square shape”)
• samkutkhedi nishani
  სამკუთხედი ნიშნანი
  “triangular sign”

Some clearer examples:

• es ghvini mrghvali bocalshi aris.
  ეს ღვინო მრგვალ ბოცალშია.
  “This wine is in a round bottle.”
• magidaze martkutkhedi ts’erlilia.
  მაგიდაზე მართკუთხედი წერილია.
  “There is a rectangular letter on the table.”

You can easily mix colors and shapes:

• mrghvali lurji thalerI
  მრგვალი ლურჯი თეფში
  “a round blue plate”
• martkutkhedi shavi ts’ertili
  მართკუთხედი შავი ფანჯარა
  “a rectangular black window”

Simple Descriptive Adjectives

Besides colors and shapes, you need a few more basic adjectives for descriptions. You will learn more in the “Basic Adjectives and Agreement” chapter, so here we only list very simple ones that combine well with color and shape words.

Georgian for “light (not heavy)” is halvi / हलვი Wait, that is wrong. The common word is mosamZime? No. Simpler beginner set: we can omit “light (not heavy)” to avoid mistakes.

Let us keep only clearly correct words.

You can use these before a noun, often together with colors:

• didi shavi masinA / დიდი შავი მანქანა “a big black car”
• patara tetri dzaghli / პატარა თეთრი ძაღლი “a small white dog”
• grdzeli lurji katsi / გრძელი ლურჯი კაბელი “a long blue cable”
• mokle kviteli kalami / მოკლე ყვითელი კალამი “a short yellow pen”

Easy Descriptive Patterns

For absolute beginners, these simple sentence patterns are very useful:

1. Noun + is + color
• es kalami lurji ia.
  “This pen is blue.”
2. Noun + is + size adjective
• es masinA didi ia.
  ეს მანქანა დიდი აქვს? wait, we want: ეს მანქანა დიდია.
  “This car is big.”
3. Noun + is + color + and + color
   To talk about multicolored things. Use da / და for “and.”
• chemi tshirti lurji da mtsvane ia.
  ჩემი ტიშერტი ლურჯი და მწვანეა.
  “My T-shirt is blue and green.”
4. Noun + is + color + and + size
• es dzaghli patara da shavi ia.
  ეს ძაღლი პატარა და შავია.
  “This dog is small and black.”

Putting It All Together: Describing Objects

You can now combine:

• color words
• shape words
• size adjectives
• the basic “X is Y” pattern

Example Descriptions

1. es sakhli didi da tetri ia.
   ეს სახლი დიდი და თეთრია.
   “This house is big and white.”
2. is masinA patara, lurji da mrghvali ia.
   ის მანქანა პატარა, ლურჯი და მრგვალია.
   “That car is small, blue, and round.”
   (Here “round” describes some part, like headlights, but this is just practice.)
3. chemi kalami mtvare lurji ia.
   ჩემი კალამი მუქი ლურჯია? (we intended “simple: My pen is blue”)
   Let us keep it simple:
   chemi kalami lurji ia.
   ჩემი კალამი ლურჯია.
   “My pen is blue.”
4. magidaze aris patara kviteli kvadrati.
   მაგიდაზე არის პატარა ყვითელი კვადრატი.
   “On the table there is a small yellow square.”
5. khilidan vdekh lurji tsas da tetri mkhars.
   Correct:
   khilidan vdekh lurj tsas da tetr mtsuvals. is too complex.
   We make a clear simple example:
   khilidan lurji tsa dZlia. → not good.
   Better keep it simple:
   khilidan vdekh lurji tsas.
   ხილიდან ვხედავ ლურჯ ცას.
   “From the window I see blue sky.”
6. chemi p’ati mrghvali da qavse ia.
   ჩემი ფინჯანი მრგვალი და ყავისფერია.
   “My cup is round and brown.”

ra feria sheni telefoni?

“What color is your phone?”
