Understanding Routine and Habit in Georgian

In this chapter you learn how to talk about what you usually do, what you always do, and what you never do. You already know the basic present tense. Now you will add the idea of habit and routine to it.

Georgian uses the same present tense forms that you already know. To show that something is a habit, you mostly add time words and adverbs such as “always”, “often”, and “every day”.

Time Expressions for Routine

These expressions tell how often or when something usually happens. They are very common in routine sentences.

Basic daily and weekly expressions

Note: In real Georgian there are several forms. At this level, focus on the pattern “kvela + time word” for “every …”.

Examples

1. I work every day.
   Me vimushaob kvela dghes.
   მე ვმუშაობ ყოველ დღე.
2. We study every evening.
   Chven viswavlobt kvela ghame.
   ჩვენ ვსწავლობთ ყოველი საღამოს.
3. She runs every morning.
   Is dgebit dodebis kvela dilas.
   ის დილით დარბის ყოველი დილით.
4. On Sundays I rest.
   Kvirebs visveneb.
   კვირაობით ვისვენებ.

Frequency adverbs

These words show how often something happens. Put them close to the verb, usually before the verb in everyday speech.

For beginners it is enough to remember:

• yoveltvis “always”
• dziritadat “usually”
• khshirad “often”
• kholeme “sometimes”
• artsodes “never”

Examples

1. I always drink coffee in the morning.
   Me yoveltvis vlio kavs dilit.
   მე ყოველთვის ვსვამ ყავას დილით.
2. He usually reads in the evening.
   Is dziritadat kitkhulobs saghamos.
   ის ძირითადად კითხულობს საღამოს.
3. We often watch TV.
   Chven khshirad vkitkhoobt televizors.
   ჩვენ ხშირად ვუყურებთ ტელევიზორს.
4. They sometimes cook at home.
   Isini kholeme amzadeben sakhlshi.
   ისინი ხოლმე ამზადებენ სახლში.
5. I never eat meat.
   Me artsodes var tsxovis mkone.
   მე არასოდეს ვჭამ ხორცს.

Talking About Daily Routine

Now combine present tense verbs with time expressions. The structure is simple.

Typical English pattern:
“I + usually + verb + in the morning.”

Typical Georgian pattern:
“me + time expression + frequency + verb.”

Word order is flexible in Georgian, but this order is natural and easy for beginners.

Morning routine examples

1. I wake up at seven o’clock.
   Me vikvdebi shvid saatze.
   მე ვიღვიძებ შვიდ საათზე.
2. I usually wake up at eight.
   Me dziritadat vikvdebi rva saatze.
   მე ძირითადად ვიღვიძებ რვა საათზე.
3. Every morning I drink tea.
   Kvela dilas me vlio chais.
   ყოველ დილით მე ვსვამ ჩაის.
4. I often eat breakfast at home.
   Me khshirad vtsameb sabavshos sakhlshi.
   მე ხშირად ვჭამ საუზმეს სახლში.
5. I never drink coffee in the evening.
   Me artsodes vlio kavs ghame.
   მე არასოდეს ვსვამ ყავას საღამოს.

Work or study routine

1. I go to work every day.
   Me kvela dghes midivar samushaoze.
   მე ყოველ დღე მივდივარ სამსახურში.
2. He usually starts work at nine.
   Is dziritadat itkhebs samushaos tsxra saatze.
   ის ძირითადად იწყებს სამსახურს ცხრა საათზე.
3. We study Georgian three times a week.
   Chven kvirashi sami jer viswavlobt kartuls.
   ჩვენ კვირაში სამჯერ ვსწავლობთ ქართულს.
4. They often work from home.
   Isini khshirad mushoben sakhlidan.
   ისინი ხშირად მუშაობენ სახლიდან.
5. I sometimes finish work late.
   Me droebit vatsruleb samushaos gaimdzlavshi.

Habitual “kholeme”

Georgian has a special marker “kholeme” that shows something happens regularly. It often comes after the verb or after the whole phrase.

Examples

1. On Sundays I usually rest.
   Kvirebs visveneb kholeme.
   კვირაობით ვისვენებ ხოლმე.
2. He drinks coffee in the afternoon (as a habit).
   Is shuadghes kavs vlio kholeme.
   ის შუადღეს ყავას სვამს ხოლმე.
3. We go to the cinema on Fridays (we have this habit).
   Paraskevebs kinoda midivt kholeme.
   პარასკევობით კინოდ მივდივართ ხოლმე.
4. They eat out on weekends (usually).
   Weekendebze isini gare vitameben kholeme.
   უიქენდებზე ისინი გარეთ ივახშმებენ ხოლმე.

Describing Weekly Routine

You can list actions one after another to describe a whole day or week.

Using sequence words

Here are simple words to organize your routine description.

Example: My weekday routine

Me kvela dghi pirvelad vikvdebi shvid saatze. Shemdeg vsvli shavs, da vliob chais. Imis shemdeg midivar samushaoze. Bolos, ghame sukavdebi da vkitkhulob tsignis.

მე ყოველ დღე პირვლად ვიღვიძებ შვიდ საათზე. შემდეგ ვიხეხავ კბილებს და ვსვამ ჩაის. ამის შემდეგ მივდივარ სამსახურში. ბოლოს, საღამოს ვისვენებ და ვკითხულობ წიგნს.

Translation:

“Every day first I wake up at seven o’clock. Then I brush my teeth and drink tea. After that I go to work. Finally, in the evening I rest and read a book.”

Talking About Personal Habits

You also use the same tools to talk about personal preferences and small daily habits.

Health and lifestyle habits

1. I always drink water.
   Me yoveltvis vlio tsqals.
   მე ყოველთვის ვსვამ წყალს.
2. I rarely eat sweets.
   Me ara khshirad vtsameb tmis natsrebs.
   მე არა ხშირად ვჭამ ტკბილეულს.
3. He usually walks to work.
   Is dziritadat tura midis samushaoze.
   ის ძირითადად ფეხით მიდის სამსახურში.
4. We often go to the gym.
   Chven khshirad midivt sportzalis.

Asking About Someone’s Routine

To ask about routine, you use yes–no and wh–questions in the present tense, and add time expressions or frequency words.

Simple questions about daily routine

Use short answers with the present tense to reply.

• Ki, dziritadat.
  კი, ძირითადად.
  “Yes, usually.”
• Ki, khshirad midivar.
  კი, ხშირად მივდივარ.
  “Yes, I often go.”
• Ara, artsodes.
  არა, არასოდეს.
  “No, never.”
• Ara, dzalian yvela dro ar.

1. My mother always gets up early.

2. My father often works late.
   Chemi mama khshirad mushobs gvian.
   ჩემი მამა ხშირად მუშაობს გვიან.
3. My sister usually studies in the evening.

Example 2: Work routine

Me kvela dghes midivar samushaoze. Dziritadat vikvdebi shvid saatze da kvela dilas vtsameb sakhlshi. Samushaoshi khshirad vliob kavs. Ghame, kholeme vakhsovt ojaxitan ertad.

მე ყოველ დღე მივდივარ სამსახურში. ძირითადად ვიღვიძებ შვიდ საათზე და ყოველ დილით ვჭამ სახლში. სამსახურში ხშირად ვსვამ ყავას. საღამოს, ხოლმე ვახშმობთ ოჯახთან ერთად.

Translation:

“Every day I go to work. I usually wake up at seven o’clock and every morning I eat at home. At work I often drink coffee. In the evening we usually have dinner together with the family.”
