Types of Apartments in German

When you talk about where you live, you often begin with the type of home. In German you usually use the basic noun and combine it with adjectives.

Common words for homes are:

You can describe your apartment with very simple patterns.

Pattern:
Ich habe eine Wohnung.
Ich habe ein Zimmer.
Meine Wohnung ist klein / groß / neu / alt.

Example sentences:
Ich habe eine kleine Wohnung.
Meine Wohnung ist groß und modern.
Ich habe ein Zimmer mit Balkon.

Notice how the article for "Wohnung" is "die", but after "eine" you see "Wohnung" without any change in this simple A1 pattern. The full grammar for this belongs to other chapters, so here you just learn the common forms you hear and say.

Rooms in an Apartment

In German you usually say how many rooms your apartment has, including the living room, but not the kitchen and bathroom.

The construction "es gibt" is very important and will be explained in its own chapter, so here you only see examples of how it appears with room vocabulary.

Basic Furniture Vocabulary

To talk about your apartment, you need the names of common furniture. Note that each noun has a gender. This is important for articles and later for cases, but here you mainly learn the standard forms.

Often a German apartment comes "möbliert", which means "furnished". If you bring your own furniture, you say "unmöbliert".

Simple Sentences about Your Apartment

To describe your home at A1 level, you usually combine "haben" and "sein" with apartment and furniture words.

Useful patterns:

Ich habe + object.
Meine Wohnung hat + object.
In meinem Zimmer ist / sind + object.

Examples:
Ich habe ein großes Bett.
Meine Wohnung hat einen Balkon.
In meinem Zimmer ist ein Schreibtisch.
In meinem Wohnzimmer sind ein Sofa und ein Sessel.

Do not worry yet about the exact form after "hat" or "in meinem". The details belong to later grammar chapters. At this level you focus on understanding and using these very common sentences as chunks.

Basic Adjectives to Describe Apartments and Furniture

You often want to say what something is like. Adjectives in German are used a lot with apartments.

Again you can use simple "sein" sentences.

Die Wohnung ist hell und groß.
Mein Zimmer ist klein, aber gemütlich.
Das Bett ist alt, aber bequem.

Talking About What Is in a Room

To say what is inside a room, German often uses short phrases with "in" plus a place word.

You will learn full location expressions later. Here are simple examples that you can already understand and use with your new vocabulary.

In der Küche ist ein Tisch.
Im Schlafzimmer ist ein Bett.
Im Wohnzimmer sind zwei Sofas.
Im Bad ist eine Dusche.

You can also use "es gibt" to say "there is / there are":

Es gibt eine Küche.
Es gibt zwei Schlafzimmer.
Es gibt einen Balkon.
