Understanding job words in German

In this chapter you focus on the most common job and occupation words you need at A2 level. You learn useful patterns to build job words, see typical example sentences, and notice how job words behave in sentences. Detailed grammar of cases, articles and verb conjugation is handled in other chapters, so here you only see what you need to talk about jobs.

Basic patterns for German job names

Many German job words come in male and female forms. Often the female form adds -in to the male form. Plural forms then add -en or -nen.

A very common pattern is:
masculine: Beruf + -er
feminine: Beruf + -in
plural (mixed or only men): Beruf + -er
plural (only women): Beruf + -innen

Examples:

Today, many people use a gender‑inclusive written form like Lehrer/in, Lehrer*in or Lehrkraft. At A2 level you only need to recognize it, not produce all forms.

Talking about your job with “sein”

Job words are most often used without an article when you say what your job is.

When you talk about your profession with sein, you normally use no article:
Ich bin Lehrer.
Sie ist Ärztin.

Compare:

Correct:
Ich bin Verkäufer.
Sie ist Ingenieurin.
Wir sind Studenten.

With article sounds different and is usually not needed at A2:
Ich bin ein Verkäufer. (only in special contexts or emphasis)

You can also say:

Ich arbeite als Lehrer.
Sie arbeitet als Köchin.

Here you also usually do not use an article after als plus the job.

Office and business jobs

Office and business jobs are very common in texts about work. Learn at least these:

der Kaufmann	male merchant, clerk	Er ist Kaufmann im Einzelhandel.	He is a retail salesman.

You often meet small structures like:

Ich arbeite im Büro.
Ich arbeite bei einer Bank.
Ich arbeite in einer Firma.

The exact use of prepositions is practiced in other units. Here you only need to see typical combinations.

Service jobs and hospitality

In everyday conversation many people talk about jobs in restaurants, hotels, and shops.

Health and care professions

Some jobs appear often when you talk about health or visiting the doctor.

Notice that Krankenpfleger and Pflegekraft are more modern and neutral. Krankenschwester is still very common but more traditional.

Technical and manual jobs

Technical and manual jobs are common in conversations about work training and the labor market.

Here you see many compound job words, for example Busfahrer, Taxifahrerin, Bauarbeiter. German often combines a thing with a job ending.

Education and academic jobs

You already know “student,” but many other jobs belong to school and university contexts.

How these prepositions and articles work belongs to later grammar chapters. Here you only recognize that they talk about training for a job.

Creative, cultural, and media jobs

These jobs often appear when people talk about hobbies and work together.

These jobs often use verbs like arbeiten, machen, spielen, schreiben. Full verb patterns appear in other chapters.

Public sector and security jobs

These jobs are common in news and official contexts.

Self‑employment and modern job titles

Many people work in new or international jobs. English words are often used in German, sometimes with a German plural.

Here many English loanwords exist. At A2 level it is enough to recognize them and see that they act like normal German nouns: they have gender, a plural, and can take articles.

Describing work situations in simple phrases

You will learn complex job applications later. For now you can combine job words with simple phrases you already know:

Ich arbeite als Verkäuferin.
Er ist seit drei Jahren Mechaniker.
Sie ist Studentin und arbeitet nebenbei als Kellnerin.
Ich suche Arbeit als Fahrer.
Sie ist zurzeit arbeitslos, aber sie war früher Krankenschwester.

Typical patterns:
Ich bin + job (no article).
Ich arbeite als + job (no article).
Ich suche eine Stelle als + job.

The details of using articles like eine Stelle or einen Job will come in other grammar units. Here the important part is to see how the job word appears in these very frequent phrases.
